With good reason though. Adam and I became the proud parents of Maggie on Sept. 1 (sharing a birthday with Meth...:). She weighed 7 lbs 8 oz, and is 19 inches long. We are happy and grateful to say that she is healthy and beautiful. Her big sister, Emily (a staunch Ectophile at the ripe old age of 10) is going to make sure that Maggie is exposed to only the best music in the world. Greetings to all, and congrats on the 2nd annual Ectofest, goosepoop and all. I hope the west coast 'fest becomes a reality, because maybe then someday it will hit the midwest, where there is a serious lack of good shows to see. It's almost impossible to get everyone to agree on anything, as we found out when last year's Ectofest was announced. Actually, the t-shirts look great. I was really sceptikal when I heard that the colors of the type and shirt were almost exactly the same, but it looks pretty cool. kinda ethereal (if a t-shirt can look ethereal). I'm wearing mine today and have gotten a number of positive comments. Cool people bonus award has to go to Bon and his wife. They were there when I showed up at 11:45, and hung out for the entire day. They were the only musicians who were present for the entire festival. Plus, they voluntarily offered up $2 for each disc sold to the charities. A surprise highlight for me was Anne Heaton. I'm not saying Anne was better than everyone on the bill. I already expect stellar sets from Susan McKeown, Sloan Wainright and Happy. So when they delivered those, I wasn't surprised. But I didn't know any of Anne's music, and I was quite impressed. I thought it was rich and varied and very personable. Her guitar player added some extra contrast to her piano, and sang great harmonies. I'll have to order at least one of her discs, since they sold out before I did my shopping. I wasn't really grabbed by Jessica or Amy's sets. Nothing wrong with them, they just didn't bowl me over. I picked up Jessica's latest CD, so perhaps that'll resonate a bit more. I lent the sampler CD Chuck gave me out to a friend at work, and he picked Amy as his favorite. Her and the person on song number 4 (Merrie Amsterburg). Actaully, I liked Merrie a lot. I've had her first disc for ages, and couldn't remember it making much of an impression. In fact, I had spent the whole morning confusing it with another disc that I own that hadn't made much of an impression :) Bought her new one too. There was no revelatory moment for me, like last year's Susan and Sloan duet. Just solid sets all day long. One thing I thought was kind of sad was that the musicians didn't really hang around that much. Bon was the only one there from end to end. Second place in the longevitiy department was Amy, who was there for about 2/3 of the day. It seemed like most of the people breezed in during the set preceeding theirs, and left soon after they were done. It's not a big deal, but the availability of so many artists throughout the day was a really nice feature of ectofest last year. While it probably wasn't how people envisioned the show, I actually preferred the rain-altered stage configuration. I found last year and during Jessica's set that the music seemed a little loud and harsh in the prime, near stage seats. Inside the pavilion, the setting was intimate and the music sounded better. Made it feel like a house concert instead of a festival, which is nice as an audience member, but probably a bit harder on the organizers. It was great to see all the east coast 'philes i've known for years, as well as a lot of new people. I last saw Steve V from Oregon something like 5 or 6 years ago. And I figured anyone wearing an original ecto t-shirt was someone I should know by name, and was pleased to find the non-Steve person wearing one was Angelos. Chuck put on the now traditional post ecto party, which was also a lot of fun. Thanks to his neighbors, the dominatrix waitresses, for all the hard work they did in preparation and all the drinks and food they forced on us (sometimes against our will!). I've never been to a party more efficiently (and forcefully) run. And no one has mentioned the most amusing party moment. Paul Blair, please step forward and take a bow. I was surprised to find that since the last time I'd seen Paul, he had shaved off all his hair. He was sitting in what was apparently Chuck's dog's (aka Happy's) prime hangout on the couch. Happy climbed right up onto Paul's chest and stood there enthusiastically licking his head. This continued for several minutes, while Paul laughed and we all looked on in such amazement that no cameras could be found. Thanks to everyone for their hospitality, and thanks again to meth 'n' chuck for all the hard work they put in to make this happen. neal ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Sep 2000 14:10:16 -0700 From: Phil Hudson Subject: Stream-of-conciousness ideas for the WestFest Neile wrote ..."-actually, well nigh impossible thing will be to find someone willing to front the money to pay for Happy, her airfare, accommodation, etc." As the subject says, this is in no particular order, just direct input from brain to keyboard. Frequent Flyers also get free coupons for hotel stays, or 2 nights for the price of 1, car rentals, etc etc. Anyone know any hotel managers or airline employees? Neile's assertion is correct; finding "someone" to front the $$ is tough, but finding 25 "someones" to kick in $50 each should be a lot easier. Virgin/Backporch recording artists Over the Rhine will be taking a break from putting the finishing touches on their new album long enough to perform a hometown concert at historic Coney Island's Moonlight Gardens this Friday, September 15, 2000. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 day of show, and available through Ticketmaster outlets. Over the Rhine's new album, Films for Radio, will be released early next year on Virgin's Backporch label. The band is describing the record as pop music ala Over the Rhine, and promises it will feature the band's curious signature blend of joyful sadness, mysticism and sensuality, simplicity and unpredictability. Over the Rhine will dip into the new batch of songs at Friday's concert, and trip through older recordings as well, putting new twists on songs that have been in the band's expanding repertoire for years. In addition to finishing their own collection of new recordings in the year 2000, Over the Rhine launched their new website earlier this year at overtherhine.com. Every month, the site features a free, previously- unreleased MP3 recording, and also contains free permanent MP3 files of selected songs (which fans voted on and picked as definitive), from each of the seven existing full-length recordings. There are weekly quotes, weekly recommendations of books and films, weekly "specials", complete archives of lyrics, downloadable sheet music files, and additional "selected writings" of Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler. There are growing press archives, copies of old newsletters and numerous photos. The band recently hosted a short story contest (contestants finished a story that Linford Detweiler started) and received scores of entries from around the world. The company hosting the band's site has reported that overtherhine.com is one of their busiest domains, receiving in excess of 18,000 visitors a month. And the band stresses that the site is still evolving. Starbucks has licensed an Over the Rhine track for an upcoming compilation which is to include contributions from Elvis Costello, Miles Davis and Jeff Buckley. Two films have licensed songs for upcoming soundtracks. "Our music continues to quietly spread its wings and drift out of town," says Karin Bergquist. "We're not talking about airplanes trailing colorful banners, but the songs are persistently finding their way into good places." The line-up Friday night will consist of a quintet featuring band leaders Karin Bergquist (vocals and guitar) and Linford Detweiler (keyboards and guitar), Jack Henderson on electric guitars and lapsteel, David LaBruyere on bass and Don Heffington on drums. Ticklepenny Corner, an up-and-coming act from Wisconsin, and local teen sensations, Brownhouse, will open the concert. "It's one of our favorite venues," says Linford Detweiler. "It's like a family reunion down by the river. And it's our last outdoor concert of the year which for us, sort of officially marks the end of summer." . . . . . *Please do not reply to this e-mail* - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | To subscribe/unsubscribe: Majordomo@ActWin.com | Subject is ignored | message: SUBSCRIBE (or UNSUBSCRIBE) listname | The three versions of this list (listnames) are: | over-the-rhine discussion list | over-the-rhine-digest digest version of discussion list | over-the-rhine-announce to only receive "official" messages from OTR ***************************************************************** - --------------------------------------------------------- This message sent using EMUmail -- http://www.emumail.com - --------------------------------------------------------- Jumping through hoops to get E-mail on the road?
