I just found out a very upsetting thing. I've been a Nina Hagen fan since 1982. She's very uneven but when she is on, she is absolutely amazing. I really believe that Nunsexmonkrock is one of the best albums of the 80s. It was certainly a brilliant album in a year of brilliant albums (1982...Kate's The Dreaming, Peter Gabriel's Security, Eno/Bryne's My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, etc.). Nina Hagen is an HIV/AIDS disbeliever! Those are the people who go around saying that HIV doesn't turn into AIDS and has nothing to do with AIDS, who claim that the drug "cocktails" are *really* what's killing most people with HIV and encourages HIV+ people to quit taking the medication, who claim that if there is such a thing as AIDS, it's either psychological or is caused by a "lifestyle" choice (how's that for homophobia?) but it still has nothing to do with HIV. These nutcases have been getting more and more attention recently, especially since ACTUP was taken over by dissenters who now are activists for the HIV/AIDS disbeliever movement, and since the president of South Africa spoke out in favor of the movement before the AIDS conference held there recently. Along with rocker Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Nina Hagen is speading the poison to her fans, among them a large gay community. I have 3 cites: 1. Nina was mentioned in a Newsweek article (the August 28 issue) about Christine Maggiore, one of the leading American voices in the movement. (She's HIV+ but still chose to have her son via natural childbirth without any protective drugs, *and* she breastfeeds). 2. Nina has a song on her most recent album, Return Of The Mother, called Handgrenade. The lyrics can be found here: http://www.totalobscurity.com/nina/index.html These lyrics alone make it very clear whose side she's on in this issue. 3. At her official web site, she includes an interview she conducted with Peter Duesberg, a Berkeley virologist who believes that AIDS is caused by "lifestyle choices" like promiscuity and drugs. http://www.nina-hagen.com/nina/german/water/archive/archive.html (It's in the Press section of the archives) The interview is in German, and while it's true that I don't read German, it's clear who is being interviewed, and the gist of it. I know Nina is weird...I've always celebrated her weirdness...that's who she is. I just never took her for a total moron. A ruthless, uncaring, homophobic, ignorant moron, to boot! I thought I'd share this, simply because there are other Nina Hagen fans in these parts who might want to know what their diva has on her mind these days. It's always disturbing when influential people latch on to crazy ideas that can be damaging to their fans. I also find it disturbing that there can be virologists who can ascribe to such a crackpot theory. Even with my graduate level studies in biology (at Northwestern; hi, Vickie, it's been a while!), it's _very_ obvious that HIV is a requisite precursor and the ultimate cause of AIDS. The comment about the leader of the movement who gave birth to her son without protective drugs and who breastfeeds is truly sickening. I've been reading up a lot on pediatric AIDS recently because the company I work for who runs www.thehungersite.com is going to be launching soon (9/15, tentatively) www.thekidsAIDSsite.com in conjunction with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS foundation (www.egpaf.org). They are an organization dedicated to research and care in the prevention of pediatric AIDS, and the statistics are staggering. 1800 children a day are infected, 90% of them in Africa. These are children under the age of 14, and it's almost purely a matter of it being transmitted through birth or mother's milk. Anyway, I'm totally not trying to make this a shameless plug, but when The Kids AIDS site is up, it'll be an easy way for people to help. Since care is so expensive, one click a day per person won't be a lot (about 40 seconds of care), but hopefully it'll add up. Like The Hunger Site and The Rainforest Site, anyone can come to the site and click once a day, and the sponsors pay for the food/land/care that the sponsoring charity provides, in exchange for the advertising that they get by being on the Thank You page after you click the donation button. Well, I'm with you, Vickie. This sucks to know. - -Kat On Fri, 1 Sep 2000, WretchAwry wrote: > I just found out a very upsetting thing. I've been a > Nina Hagen fan since 1982. Vickie wrote: > Nina Hagen is an HIV/AIDS disbeliever! Yeah, it's pretty silly, isn't it? We just talked about this for the 2nd time on the Diamanda Galás list a few days ago. Nina's an advocate of the group Alive & Well, who are the main dissenters in the HIV-causing-AIDS field. For those of you who don't really know of Diamanda Galás or her work, she has been one of the most active and insistent voices for justice in the AIDS crisis. Her main work from the 1980s is an astonishing trilogy entitled _The Masque of the Red Death_ entirely focused upon the AIDS epidemic. She later condensed it into one work entitled _Plague Mass_ and performed it around the world. Anyhow, she and Nina were viewed as peers at one time, though their work is extraordinarily divergent in terms of content and compassion. Diamanda learned of Nina's involvement with and support of Alive & Well and she sent this powerful little letter to the list: My friends, I am very alarmed at Nina Hagen's idiotic statements; her idiotic statements have always been amusing but in this case she is assuming a sober voice, which is unattracive for her. I do not know why she has not continued her singing lessons, which she desperately requires. In this way she reminds me of Benetton, whose clothes are _desperately_ unattractive. Each of our treatment protocalls MUST be our own decision; and this _cannot_ be done by blindly following the advice of ANY GROUP, let alone this Heaven's Gate horseshit that an UFO-obsessed broad like Nina would naturally espouse. I like hippies. They're fun. But this disease will kill the lazy of soul, of heart, of mind, and of fortitude. There is no way to avoid the math here, dears. You have to do it. I am about to go onto the ribavarin-interferon combo for HEP C, and let me tell you I have tried many alternative therapies over the last 11 years. I have seen MANY doctors and spoken to MANY people and read MANY research articles and I am not doing this blindly. Some of you may not remember the last 20 years very well. You might be too young to remember them. I have seen many deaths, and those who died the fastest chose to stay in a comfortable state of denial until it was too late. Socrates said, "The unexamined life is not worth living." And he was killed for that by a society who found his insistence upon looking at every issue with forty eyes dangerous. Surely if we are going to die, we should at least have earned it first. Diamanda ...she's my hero! Anyhow. I thought y'all might find that interesting. ===== [an interesting compliment about our valiant narrator that y'all might perhaps find agreeable] "you're the aston-martin of robots" - - xovoxovoxo __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'm afraid I must disagree with you, the experience didn't cause any unhappiness. Listening to "Proof" through Gradient _Evidence_ speakers was sort of strange ("Show the proof and hide the evidence..."), as you can see from http://www.gradient.fi/evi.htm they are a bit difficult to hide :-) As a general note for speaker testing, remember that the listening room size, acoustics and speaker positioning have a _huge_ effect on sound, and ideally you should test the speakers at home. - -- Markku Kolkka markkuk@iki.fi ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #254 **************************
