No small thing for an introduction. But even with the monetary details aside, I would say it's a better introduction for someone new to Sandy--rather like the 1-disc _Best Of_ that was taken from the box set. Rather than attempting to pull together the loose ends of her career as the box set does, it's an attempt to show the range of her career. Actually, the box set tries to do both, but I'd say that _No More Sad Refrains_ does it better. - --Except it doesn't have "Tam Lin". I mean, what good is a Sandy Denny compilation that doesn't have "Tam Lin"? (I'm just joking, but it _is_ my favourite song of hers. It was the first song of hers I heard, too, and that was well over 20 years ago and it still knocks me over each time I hear it.)-- But seriously, she's someone I can't imagine not owning the complete catalog of (up to and including a couple of boots and paying an exorbitant rpice for a disc that only had a very limited release). Hmmmm, maybe the e-mail address is no longer good either. I'll post if a copy actually shows up in the mail. (Maybe I better make a copy of mine before I give it away though!) I would have been happy to have included an order for you (though maybe not so happy if the Margot experience matches Greg's!) I'm actually ordering the Margot disc for Juha, and I only own it cause I bought 2 copies when I ordered it for Andrew last year. I get great discs that I can't buy here in return, and often get exposed to music that I may not have bothered to buy. Yamaha NS 10 speakers are *studio reference monitors*, which in the accurate sense of the term (as opposed to marketing weasel-speak), means that they will offer a pretty flat frequency response across the audio spectrum. ( which is moderate techno-speak) In human being terms, this means that whatever you put into them will be more or less what you get out of them, without "coloring" the sound ( ie; adding more or less bass, treble, etc). This is a requisite for audio monitoring, as you need to be able to hear exactly what you're recording. However, these systems can sound 'lacking' when listening for pleasure and entertainment. This is because most consumer audio brand loudspeakers have frquency boosts in the high and low ends to compensate for how the human ear actually hears sound. We like to hear the bass and treble boosted when we listen to music, and reference monitors don't do this, so they can sound too clean for general listening. So before you rush out and buy a new set of Yamaha NS10s- yes they *do* best represent the type of speakers most consumers have - but unlike the consumer brands, they are manufactured deliberately accoustically "flat" for precision monitoring, and are not generally the kind of speaker you would want to have for general listening. Thanks again to Paul for his informative post. - -----Original Message----- From: Paul Kim [mailto:pkkim@gis.net] Sent: Friday, August 25, 2000 10:55 PM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Re: testing new speakers I'm not a big tech head (although, if you give me a couple years and some money, I'm sure i'll become one), however I do have two recommendations about testing new speakers : firstly, most recording studios have Yamaha NS-10 speakers in their control rooms. Usually, they will also have one or two sets of better speakers, and one set of worse speakers. But the Yamahas are pretty much an industry standard because it is believed that they best represent the type of speakers that most consumers have. Therefore, you might want to look into buying them because a lot of mixes will be done so that they will sound good on those speakers. secondly, choose a song that YOU are familiar with, something that you are used to hearing on whatever sound system you may have. Make sure that you listen to it on your current stereo system with the current speakers so that you know what you like and what you don't like from the set. Also listen to it on some friends' stereo systems to see if they bring out textures that you couldn't hear on your system. Listen to the song on headphones and in the car too. Be very aware of all the nuances and the way the highs, the mids, and the lows interact; know the song inside and out. Then, go listen to the song on the speakers that you wish to try out. another small note. When you do listen on the various systems, make sure that you listen to the song flat. In other words, don't have any preset "ambiences" in place, and take out any bass or treble boosts. paul kim ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 16:39:03 -0400 (EDT) From: "Mark Anthony Miazga" Subject: salem witch trials Hi everyone, I'm a first year high school English intern, and just got back from my second day of school. I love it so far. Anyhow, in my 10th grade general literature class, we're starting on "The Crucible" next week. So far, we've been doing some background info on the Puritan days (today reading some very dry Anne Bradstreet poetry), and will eventually start talking about the cultural phenomenon that the Salem Witch Trials were. I was sensing a lot of boredom in class today, and wanted to bring some different sort of medium into the class to start talking about some of this stuff. I started wondering if there were any songs about the Salem Witch trial. Anyone know of any? The only one I've come up with is Mary Lou Lord's "Salem '76", which I'm having a bit of trouble deciphering. The lyrics are below. "Salem '76" (Lord) This town's pretty cool around Halloween but other than that it's the same old scene all that history all that mystery For years I walked that hollowed ground and soon they passed their judgment down and they'll never know they killed me years ago And I drown in the sound of yesterday's raid I burned at the stake of yesterday's raid and in my own hometown there's no attempt to help me down from the gallow's pull seven curses on a hangman's soul the spirit of the beating heart the blessed and the magic arts rid my soul they took control they pulled my masquerade away and made mew hat I am today for all to see go on - look at me I'm not the one who danced with you then And I'm not the one who asked to see you again and in my own hometown there's no attempt to help me down from the gallow's pull seven curses on a hangman's soul This time I'll have the final word this time I'll win the case I won't become a Sarah Good again No one's gonna make me change my mind's made up and rearranged if they had their way they'd lynch me all over again and in my own hometown there's no attempt to help me down from the gallow's pull seven curses on a hangman's soul Back to me now. I'm getting all the Salem references, and the lynching/Sarah Goode/hangman imagery. But who is the narrator? I'm having a hard time figuring out if it's just some girl, or if it's a ghost, or what? Any thoughts? Any other thoughts on the song in general? I've heard the Poor Clares perform twice and they're great! Their songs range from enchanting to vibrant, and almost all have a strong traditional backbone. The Poor Clares are one of the most gifted American Celtic groups; and while their songs are strongly Irish in nature, there's often a dash of jazz and folk in their music. One of my favorite songs is "Dance to Your Daddy" on their Change of Habit CD. Some of the songs they perform are traditional ballads, gentle and melodic, but with creative adaptations. Other songs, such as "Dark Stranger's Ceili," a song about being consumed by the dance at a Ceili, are originals. "Dark Stranger's Ceili" makes you feel as if you're in the midst of a dance -- or wish you were. September 28th's 7pm performance will be an all-acoustical show. You can read more about the Poor Clares at www.poorclares.com. (Of course!) Tickets are $20 for general admission. Seating is limited to 50 people. For reservations or more information, call 202-986-9275 (my office) or email me at billonline@adlerbooks.com. I'm organizing this concert as a volunteer because I really like the band. The Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission has ordered the Sydney 2000 Olympics organisers (SOCOG) to use ALT tags on all images and image map links in its web site. IBM, who was contracted to develop the site, claims it needs $2 million and a year to retrofit ALT tags to the entire site. It goes without saying that the changes would have cost $0 if IBM had correctly used ALT tags in the first place. http://slashdot.org/articles/00/08/28/1143249.shtml HA!! I hope the Salt Lake City organisers are taking notice. I also hope that IBM doesn't get one penny extra. How dare they ask for extra money when they should have known to put the alt tags in anyway. If it's any comfort, here's another web horror story: Janice Buckner, Long Island's best-known children's musician (and a good friend) has a website with embedded .WAV files, particularly on the pages describing her albums. The problems are 1) there is currently no easy way to "plug in" a .WAV player for the Linux version of Netscape, 2) .WAV files take a long time to download, and 3) why did her webmaster choose embedded .WAVs over making RealAudio and MP3 streaming files available? When I explained my dilemna to Janice, I received a forwarded message from her webmaster, who had apparently decided that those of us who go Linux (or another non-Microsoft OS) are a cult of people devoted to the obscure and difficult. She's making parallels between the witch trials and her own life. I love Salem, but I don't know offhand if other songs have mentioned it. Thanks Jeff. Those are amazing!! Jorane Scissorhands :) Has anyone here actually seen her live? It looks like she'd be pretty incredible. Yes, thanks Jeffy!!! Those videos were indeed incredible. Neal wondered: >Has anyone here actually seen her live? It looks like she'd be pretty >incredible. I haven't, but a good friend has, at the Winnipeg Folk Festival last month. The adjectives used were "intense" and "strange". Sounds good to me. :) >(I wonder if people think I must be working really hard when I stay late >to watch Jorane videos and make Cindy Lee Berryhill fliers?) Hey, I got massive brownie points the night I stayed late to make ectofest fliers and fax press releases. Last night woj and I headed down to the Mercury Lounge to see Katell Keineg for the first time in, like, forever. It was well worth the 3+-hour round trip, getting home at 2:30 am, and crawling in to work at 8:30 am (though I am going to bed as soon as I finish this %). We didn't hit as much traffic as anticipated, so we saw the group slotted before her, a duo called Teenage Moustache. They reminded me of what would happen if Shane MacGowan had a Clockwork Orange-style treatment with the entire Projeckt and 4AD catalogs. The music was all dreamy and atmospheric, transporting me straight back to 1992 (or thereabouts) ... and then the lead guy (whose name, apparently, was Philip) would stagger about and say silly drunken things in a vaguely Irish accent between songs. It was all supremely odd. Katell took the stage with a minimum of fanfare, and I was excited to note that she was practically solo! I've only ever seen her with a full band. She did have a guitar player with her for the second half of her set, but it was all very sparse and wonderful. Don't get me wrong -- her band shows rank as some of the most intense live musical experiences of my life. But to hear the songs stripped-down was lovely. She did a few new ones, and a lot of old songs ("O Seasons O Castles", "Ole", "Smile", "One Hell Of A Life", several more from the first album). Her set lasted almost an hour and a half. For an encore, she did two covers, the first of which I didn't recognize and the second a Louis Armstrong song. I realize that Ms. Keineg is an acquired taste, but seeing her perform live is always a memorable experience. There's something about her music that catches me up and carries me away, and doesn't let me go until the last note has faded away. I need to dig out _Jet_ and _O Seasons O Castles_ again. It's been far too long. P.S. Other ectophiles in attendance were Chris Montville and also Juha Sorva, fresh in from Finland. It's always great to meet ectophiles from far away! +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | ectofest 2000: sat. sept. 2, 2000 kenosia park, danbury, ct | | http://www.ectofest.org | +==========================TICKETS ON SALE NOW!!!==========================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 23:25:38 -0400 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: jorane videos online neal sez: > Thanks Jeff.
