I've been using the Microsoft Access 97 CD for testing lately, in the past I've used various versions of AutoCad. Ok.. seriously.. while it's been a while since I've looked at speakers (the last demonstration I saw used Al DiMeola's 'Race with Devil on Spanish Highway') a browse through my collection for suitable CDs came up with: Metallica's self titled album, mostly to check the low end. It's a well engineered album and seems well suited to this purpose. And if the speakers survive this one, maybe some Dr. Dre next.. For something on the light side the best I could come up with is Clara Ponty. Pretty much just solo piano. For something in between I'd go with CD2 of Kasia Kowalska's Pelna Obaw Special Edition, although I'm sure I'd get some funny looks from the speaker salesman.. - -- +-----------------------------------------------+ + dave + + Sideshow Bob's House of Wax and Waffles + + Female vocalists, Christian, and Polish music + + http://www.magpage.com/~sspan/ + +-----------------------------------------------+ + irc.dal.net #tori #ecto + +-----------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Aug 2000 11:22:52 -0400 From: Valerie Richardson Subject: Irene Trudel WFMU radio archives There is so much great music to listen to online these days that it makes my little head spin. I've been enjoying the Ecto shoutcasts for the last couple of weeks. One of my favorite radio programmers is Irene Trudel, who does a Monday afternoon show on WFMU, the community radio station in New Jersey. She now has archives of her shows available for listening at http://www.wfmu.org/Playlists/Irene/ Her show is very ecto-philic, although she leans very much towards the folk side of things, particularly English folk music of the 1960s. She specializes in rare and hard-to-find recordings. I discovered the artist Linda Perhacs through her show. She frequently has in-studio guests. I look forward to meeting some of you at Ectofest next week. Only one song that makes me cry so far (which, for Dar, is well below the average) but I haven't really spent enough time with the lyrics booklet yet. Lots of catchy tunes, lots of wonderful lyrics, lots of Dar doing that thing with her voice that makes you fall in love with her. I love it. She is one of my favorite artists, and I had been waiting years for new material from her. But I still almost didn't buy the album because the idea of her doing Latin music just really didn't sound appealing. But I decided to give it a chance anyway, even at import price. And, I really like it. Yes, about 70% of the songs have a definite Latin feel to them. But that Latin influence is mixed with distinct Kirsty melodies and her incisive, often biting, lyrics. The closest comparison is "My Affair" from her _Electric Landlady_ album. And, there are a number of songs which have no Latin sound at all. I will admit that I was hoping for more classic Kirsty songs and sometimes I wish I could delete the horns and Latin percussion from parts of the album. But I still enjoy the album much more than I expected I would. I've heard mp3's of it (just tiding me over until my Amazon order arrives, relax :), and I think I'm going to like it much better than I'd feared, based on the advance buzz about it. There was a review of the first of Dar's Bottom Line shows in yesterday's New York Times. I can't seem to find an online copy of the review, but I can't really tell if it's a positive one or not anyway. (NY Times reviews are too often like that. :P) She'll be at Toad's Place, of all places in September- looking forward to seeing her there, though it will be supremely odd. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | ectofest 2000: sat. sept. 2, 2000 kenosia park, danbury, ct | | http://www.ectofest.org | +==========================TICKETS ON SALE NOW!!!==========================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Aug 2000 17:51:29 -0700 (PDT) From: Drew Harrington Subject: Peter Gabriel / Massive Attack at Kennedy?
