Subject: testing speakers Since I was about 16, when I didn't even have proper speakers to test, I've been using Steve Hackett's "Ace of Wands" from his first solo lp. It's an instrumental, but it pretty much covers the whole spectrum: thundering bass, acoustic guitars, fast, slow, soft and hard. It's a pretty impressive track, the best that Genesis never did. For my 40th I bought myself my first real set of components, and as a ritual I put it on. It sounds great! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2000 04:52:43 -0700 (PDT) From: Marla Tiara Subject: Dar Williams but first... > Marla: your site is fab-tastic, and you're certainly > not a lurker... you post all the time! Keep > posting! Thank you! :) Alas, I didn't get Dar to wear my tiara. The in-store (at HMV in Cambridge, MA) was *packed* - the spot I had allowed me mostly to see a speaker with Dar's body attached. But that was OK because I got to hear her live for the first time (I'm a new fan, although I don't know why I didn't ever become a fan sooner as I've heard her before, but oh well). She did four songs from the new album, was very chatty, and ended with Iowa, which I was told by another friend is "everyone's favorite song" - it was excellent, so that makes sense ;) I then ran across the street (avoiding crowds and high prices) and bought the CD at Newbury Comics, but I haven't listened to it just yet. I'm planning on buying the rest of her CDs sometime this week. OK I guess I'm not a lurker anymore. I've always been bad at that. While I'm here, good shows in Boston coming up are: Sarah Harmer and Megan Toohey Papas Fritas and Tahiti 80 Mary Lou Lord and Bonfire Madigan [all at TTs] Ani Difranco [Orpheum] Sleater Kinney [The Roxy] Kristin Hersh (TWO shows at the Brattle on one night! Tickets at http://www.virtuous.com) I don't know which ones I'll be at - definitely Ani and Kristin though - but I was just happy to have so many good choices! take care! Having had the pleasure of seeing Happy's distinctive signature many times over the years I can say without doubt that it is indeed her signature. Also, Happy remembers the circumstances so most of the peices fit together. What doesn't fit is the fact that it's signed to someone with a different name than the seller, but there could be many reasons for that. Consider it verified. Vickie - -------------------------------------------------------------- To Scott: To inject a personal opinion, I had assumed the CD contained just Happy's signature and not a personal note ("To Alan--In appreciation for all of your efforts. Happy Rhodes") and you're not Alan, Scott. How puzzling, but thank you for sending a photo. This doesn't apply to you, since it wasn't signed to you, but I think I'll take this opportunity to express my pure and utter disgust at someone who sells a *personally* signed article. However, the CD deserves a good home with someone who'll appreciate it for the treasure it is. Not because of the signature, but for the truly wonderful music within. This is it's first year, but there's a 'fest slated for Labor Day weekend about 100 miles south of St. Louis. http://www.bearcatgetaway.com/women.html It's got most of the best of the local indies along with a smattering of regional and national acts (including Ripley Caine from up chicago-way). 2 afternoon/nights/wee-hours of music with camping, river floating/swimming, etc. > The midwest in general, and Chicago in particular, have a lot of good > indie women, albeit arguably less famous, for the most part, than the > names dropped in connection with the hypothetical west coast fest. > Artists like Pepper McGowan, Beth Lodge-Rigal, Life in the Garden, Ellen > Rosner, Ripley Caine, Donna Adler, Rose Polenzani, Antje Gehrken, the > Twigs, Rebecca Gates, and ex-Chicagoan Anne Heaton, to name but a few, > could be showcased at such an event. A complete list would take pages, but Over The Rhine and Carrie Newcomer are two names not to be omitted from any enumeration. And there's the whole poppunky KC/Lawrence scene to tap, as well as the twin cities area (Marlee MacLeod, Brenda Weiler, et al). bob np - Mouth Music, Mo-Di ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2000 23:07:46 -0400 From: meredith Subject: ectofest schedule posted Hi! So I had no idea Kirsty MacColl has a new album out. Maybe it's been discussed here and I just spaced on it? It's called _Tropical Brainstorm_. According to the press it's got a definite Latin bent, which means I'll probably be giving it a miss (there's something in my genetic makeup that activates my Violent Recoil reflex whenever I hear an even vaguely Latin beat -- I don't know what it is, but it's completely involuntary), but I figured this tidbit would be of interest here. Just a warning about Chaosmusic.com.au - they're fine when supplying items held locally (=Australia, so Brunatex and Margot Smith work out), but if you add to that order discs they have to get from their American suppliers ... shudder ... it can take several months, they tell you discs are sent and they never arrive, they send the wrong discs, and often the discs are long out of print anyway. This has happened to me and several people I know - only a problem with the American side of the business, not the Aussies. >>The Brunatex CD is available online now at >>http://www.chaosmusic.com.au/shop/band_details.asp?artistID=182867 >>(or go to http://www.chaosmusic.com.au and search for brunatex) >>If you go there now, the cd is only $5.70 US INCLUDING postage!!! >>You can get this because when you initially join ChaosMusic you receive $5 >>free of first purchase! :) Watch out for your discounts too - there can be glitches where you enter your credit card details on a screen reading one price, and the confirmation screen comes back with a higher price.
