Subject: Time & Love, etc No, I think I'll have to be quite disagreeable about this -- I like Time and Love. There, I've said it and I'm not sorry. I should, however, qualify it by confessing a degree of ignorance. My experience of Laura Nyro is confined to an anthology, a live album, and one of her later releases, so there were a few songs on Time and Love that I'd never even heard of. And, while I like her music, I couldn't swear I was a fan and, therefore, don't consider her sacrosanct or her music untouchable. I'm listening to the anthology("Stoned Soul Picnic") now, and Eli's Comin' has just been and gone, and I still admire Lisa Germano's version. I guess I don't understand what "the spirit" of the song originally was. My experience with Jane Siberry, so far, has been far from positive, but I really liked what she did: I thought it was inventive, playful, honourable. There's a lot of versions on Time and Love that intrigue me and make me want to go back to hear the originals, which can only be a good thing, as far as I can see. . There are a few rather anonymous covers, I admit -- I don't think Beth Nielsen Chapman's "stoney end", for instance, adds much to the original, and there are a couple of disappointments. I didn't care for Honey in the Rock's "and when I die" and I thought laura stein's elevator/cocktail lounge jazz take on "upstairs by a chinese lamp" was pretty dire, but I thought that, on the whole, this was a good take on Laura Nyro's music, as well as being a good introduction to her stuff. My one overriding cavil is that I just wish they had gotten some male artists to cover her stuff -- using just female artists strikes me as narrow-minded and self-defeating, denying the fact that her music speaks across genders. Speaking of playing catch-up, I've only just gotten Betty Cook's "The Girl Who Ate Herself". I remember reading blurb on this album when it came out, the label comparing her to Tori Amos ("Those folks at east/west have done it again!") but it's taken me all this time to actually pick it up. It sounds kind of 80's to me -- overproduced, soft focus -- and "Hand on My Shoulder", moving ballad though it is, sounds like an alternative take on "Wind Beneath My Wings". Close your eyes and imagine Streisand singing it. It's too easy and kind of frightening. What's she done since then? Is she still recording? I'd be interested to see how she's developed. Same with the Dear Janes, whose No Skin I have listened to -- damned fine, but already 4 years old, so what have they been up to since then? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 08:21:01 +0100 From: "Adam K." Subject: uncool dog songs Me, ever the cutting edge of cred, have these offerings: Gulliver, by Elton John, off of his very first lp, Empty Sky. About a dog, kind of haunting. I always liked it. Shannon by Henry Gross. I think that's his name --- it's been a while. He wrote it about one of the Beach Boys' dogs, who had disappeared into the sea. It was a big hit about 25 years ago, and is reallllly sad. There's always Bandit Queen's "Give it to the Dog", but it's not really fitting. You could also play the whole of Pink Floyd's Dogs. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2000 23:57:19 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Seattle ectophiles: upcoming Victoria Williams/Patty Larkin shows For those in the Seattle area. - --Neile np Flying Lizards "Money" at 45 rpm instead of 33.3. Hear some of their music at the Festival website http://www.montereyworldmusic.org/artists.htm For those who are unfamiliar with these folks and wish to have their consciousness elevated a couple of thousand feet, check out any of their albums from Northside, or get the excellent Northside samplers for about $3.50 apiece. (About 20 songs on each CD! What a deal!) www.noside.com. Hedningarna play some of the most intense and expressive music I have ever heard. If I don't hear one or two of their pieces every day, I start twitching and develop nervous tics. One anonymous reviewer put it most succinctly: "Primal rumbling reverberating through time.... Listening to Hedningarna’s music, is like eating black bread tainted with ergot and hallucinating with a bunch of peasants from a Breughel painting.... Drawing from the ancient runosongs (poem-songs) which date to pre-Christian times, their melodies and lyrics tell tales of love, maidens and magic..." I spent a good deal of my early youth hallucinating with a bunch of peasants, and trust me; these people are ten times more fun, even without the ergot. 8-) See you there Phil ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 13:47:18 -0500 From: "Mattoon, Melanie" Subject: RE: Splashdown news I second Neile's sentiments on the anticipation for the release of _Blueshift_, which was to be Splashdown's first major label full-length release. What a shame that Glen Ballard (whose Java label Splashdown was signed to last year) couldn't help them with the money and support they deserve. In fact, all of their releases are worthwhile. They have an LP, _Stars and Garters_, and an EP, _Halfworld_, that were both released on Castle Von Buhler Records and can be purchased through their website. It's really disheartening to me that so many artists recently have been shafted by their labels. _Blueshift_ was actually completed last spring and was originally slated to come out in September of last year. To find out a year later that it's not coming out at all makes me quite angry at the state of the music industry these days. Ninetynine, _180o_ To: Our Listeners From: Splashdown August 1, 2000 Dear Everyone, First, we'd like to say a gargantuan "thank you" to everyone who has written to us. We do eventually read it all, and although it isn't possible for us to reply to every letter, we love hearing from you. Simply put: you inspire us. Many of our listeners have been asking us two questions lately: "When is the Blueshift album coming out?" and "Will Splashdown tour in my neck of the woods soon?" The very unpleasant truth is that "Blueshift" is not going to be released. Signing a major-label contract with Java/Capitol Records has turned out to be a severe career derailment for our little group. We won't go into the details of the nightmare here. Splashdown survives, but the "Blueshift" album is a casualty of serious problems at the label. As you can imagine, this has not been easy for us to accept. In fact, it's been 100% drive-you-insane-tear-out-your-hair frustration, all day, every day, month after month, year after year. We've been waiting (just like you) for the album's release since the start of 1999, when it was completed. Since then, the label has given us nothing but false starts, broken promises, and crushing disappointment. Just as we were starting to see exciting results from our touring and from mad radio play at stations like WBER and WOXY, the situation at the label, always somewhat dodgy, became completely intolerable. Java/Capitol is no place for us to be. We're currently doing everything we can to disentangle ourselves from this mess and get free of the label. All we want is to communicate with you via new Splashdown music, and we are fighting to make it happen -- fighting to resist being "crushed by the wheels of industry." As things develop, we'll keep you posted through the Splashdown website. We hope to bring you new sound, one way or another, within the upcoming year. As for touring, there is nothing we'd rather be doing now, period. But Splashdown can't hit the road without tour support from the label, no matter how low-budget we travel. As with everything else at the label, the tour support that enabled us to play at Lilith Fair and to visit places like Toronto and Los Angeles has withered and died. It's a damn shame too, because the current stage incarnation of the band is the hottest we've ever had -- but don't worry, we're keeping the engine warm while we're "temporarily garaged!" The bottom line: we're going through some dark days now, but only to reach the bright days to come. And they will be bright days indeed. Stick around. One last thing. Some bands think Napster is Jesus. Some bands think Napster is Satan. We have a straightforward position regarding Napster, Gnutella, and the other music-trading software out there: If a band officially states that its music can be traded on Napster, then by all means download their tunes until your mouse-click finger is bleeding. If a band officially states that its music is not to be traded on Napster, then don't put their music on Napster, ever. Simple, no? Every band has a website these days, so anybody interested can check the band's official position before trading that band's songs. The decision whether to make copyrighted music available on the Internet should belong to the band that made the music, not anyone else. End of story. We ask you to please DO NOT post Splashdown's officially released recordings to the Internet. This includes our albums, EP's, soundtrack songs -- you know the drill. That's our decision, and we have our reasons which we shouldn't have to explain to anyone. Live recordings made by fans are a different matter. The trading of such "bootleg" recordings is a long-standing tradition, and we don't mind this as long as it isn't being done for money. We'll see you in the future! Of these I've played The Marvin Pontiac, Ninetynine and Anet most often. - --Neile Waterson:Carthy, _Broken Ground_ (from 1999) Another wonderful album, with a quite different version of "Raggle Taggle Gipsies" than those I've heard before. The family combination is quite wonderful--all three participants (Norma Waterson, Martin Carthy, and Eliza Carthy) are wonderfully talented and at home with their material. Pooka, _Spinning_ (from 1997) This one went quickly out of print. Pooka have a certain awkwardness that is disarming and quirky and works on their folkrock/pop sound. This album feels more poplike than _Pooka_ (their first disc), but still distinctively off-kilter and odd and charming. I like it. Anet / Annette Ducharme, _Tortured_ (1997/2000) After belatedly discovering that this was still available by mailing the sales address at Anet's http://www.anetmusic.com website, I ordered and got a copy quickly. This is a strong follow-up to Bloom/Don't Argue With Her (this previous disc is known under both names) and is very much in the same vein: Anet's strong vocals, hooky songwriting, energetic rock sound. I highly recommend this disc to anyone who likes lively, interesting pop/rock. Faithfull, Marianne, _Vagabond Ways_ While what Marianne Faithfull is doing these days doesn't affect me as strongly as, say, Broken English, I still really like her voice and her interpretations of songs. This is a good album, and a welcome addition to our Marianne Faithfull collection. And as Jeff Hanson said here earlier, the songs are very appropriate to her personality. Ninety Nine, _180o_ This album is a combination of driving indierock sounds and things that sound more toward the Laika end of things (though not electronic) and a little more drifty. I really like the way she constructs songs--they don't often stick in my head, but are always highly listenable. Marvin Pontiac, _Greatest Hits_ It is odd, compelling stuff, creative out of the velvet grit of "Pontiac"'s voice and sensibility, and the words and tunes. Funky, blusey. Wonderful. Songs that really stick in your head. Young Marble Giants, _Salad Days_ This is a collection of what are basically home demos. While it's really better to find a copy of _Colossal Youth_ if you can, _Salad Days_ is still a fascinating glimpse into this band's wholly original sound and style. Minimalist and far out/ahead of its time. Sound is at times a little iffy, which reflects the (primitive by today's standards) technology they were using to record it, but that very primitive nature suits the music magically--they take great advantage of it. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 19:50:25 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: NYC Over the Rhine reminder! >***Terri Templeton will be taking a break from her Sabbatical and >appearing at this show with the band! >August 25 NYC >All Angels Coffeehouse >251 W 80th St >NYC NY 10024 >#212.362.9300 > >The venue is located on the upper west side of Manhattan at the >intersection of 80th and Broadway, on 80th, right next to Zabar's. >If you are taking the subway, take the 1/9 to the 79th street stop. > >Doors: 7:30pm >Show: 8pm >Tickets: $10 at the door ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 20:33:18 -0700 From: "Marcel Kshensky" Subject: doggie song Chip- McCartney's "Lady Madonna" is a great doggie song. woof, Marcel Send your favorite photo with any online greeting! http://www.whowhere.lycos.com/redirects/americangreetings.rdct ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Aug 2000 23:16:53 -0400 From: "Kimberly Oliver" Subject: Re: ecto-digest V6 #244 Hi, Woj and meredith I am going to the Katell Keineg show Definitley I actually just found out about it a few days ago through a friend but it would be great to meet you guys and any other ecto-friends also for those who Like Patti Rothberg she is performing as well on Sept 11th at The Bottom line and I have one more question has anyone heard of Leah Andreone and Does anyone know what she has been up to I haven't heard a thing and I would personally love to see her.
