Pravatiner" Subject: In for a penny... As long as a western Ectofest is being proposed, it may be worth thinking about one for the central region. The midwest in general, and Chicago in particular, have a lot of good indie women, albeit arguably less famous, for the most part, than the names dropped in connection with the hypothetical west coast fest. Artists like Pepper McGowan, Beth Lodge-Rigal, Life in the Garden, Ellen Rosner, Ripley Caine, Donna Adler, Rose Polenzani, Antje Gehrken, the Twigs, Rebecca Gates, and ex-Chicagoan Anne Heaton, to name but a few, could be showcased at such an event. A possible sticking point is the willingness of a somewhat well-organized community of local artists (there are a number of cooperatives like Nancy Walker's Female Singer-songwriters You Wanna Know About, and the producers of the _Big Fish, Little Fish_ album) to work with the organizers of an enterprise built around an obscure out-of-town artist. But perhaps that would not be totally insurmountable after all. Public is the most produced of her cd's. I would very much recommend her third cd "Science Fair" as the next stop as it is very much simpler from a production perspective but has great songs on it in a variety of styles. The simplicity of the arrangements makes for more enjoyable listening imho as you can get more into her words, the melodies, the sound of her voice and her lyrics. Her first major cd release "The Original Leap Year" shares a number of songs with "Public" and that is another reason to explore that one after Science Fair. Enjoy! Whoa I didn't know she had a new album. Thanks for the news. Also, thanks for the Morcheeba discussions. I didn't know they were coming out with a new album until I saw it in the store, same time I saw Victoria Williams' new one "Water to Drink" in the store. I had to get VW's new one, and it's really good. I know at least 1 other ectophile has it because it was posted in a recent listening list. Anyway, other fans should definitely check it out. Funny, I've been a fan of Mouth Music and just found out that Jackie Joyce & Martin Swan called themselves "Ambisonic" and had a CD called "Ecohero". One of the tracks on the CD is called "Helicopter Girl". Pretty good CD, but I think I like Mouth Music (Mo-Di especially) better. - -=$>DaveTorok<$=- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 22:11:02 +0100 From: "Adam K." Subject: Muse, and a few other thoughts I haven't had time to post anything recently, but just thought I'd squeeze off this postette in reponse to Sherlyn's. Muse have been mighty hyped over here -- there's a few bands (Doves, Coldplay) that are the "new" Radiohead and, as OK Computer absolutely blew me away, being one of the finest lps of the last ten years, I was eager to try them out. I borrowed someone's Muse cd from work and listened to it at my desk. I listened to it again. I got really, really bored and gave it back. I was EXTREMELY disappointed, and can't even tell you why. As soon as the cd was over, i had absolutely no memory of anything I'd heard. I also borrowed the Doves, which I thought was marginally more interesting (a band trying to do something different instead of just striking angst-ridden, moody, epic poses) and as for Coldplay, I think I'll hold off on them for a while. So, count this as a vote of dissent. Meanwhile, a vote of absolute Yay! for the Dear Janes, and I haven't even heard the cd all the way through, yet -- so far, so great! someone compared them to the Indigo Girls, who i love, and this time the comparison holds up and thensome. I think I'll be listening to this quite a bit, for a while. Oh, and a vote of confidence for a cd I just picked up called Time and Love, a tribute to Laura Nyro. I got flamed by a Laura Love fan a while back for opining that her recent cover of Stoned Soul Picnic was slavish and kind of weak. Well, THIS is the way to cover Laura Nyro. Jill Sobule does a cunning, off-centre version of the same song, and there are loads of little gems like it (Phoebe Snow, Jonatha Brooke) through the cd. Highly recommended. oops, time's up. gotta run. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 18:23:20 EDT From: "Hotel America" Subject: Re: Time and Love >Oh, and a vote of confidence for a cd I just picked up called Time and > >Love, a tribute to Laura Nyro. Really? I'm surprised to hear someone say that they enjoyed this CD of Laura Nyro covers, which I thought was jam-packed with duds. I agree that Jill Sobule's version of "Stoned Soul Picnic" was enjoyable, but IMO it was the ONLY highlight on this collection. Lisa Germano's funereal take on "Eli's Comin'" completely missed the essence of the song, and even though I love her, I must say that Jane Siberry's own composition/medley of Nyro's lyrics and melodies was just silly and superfluous. Even the better tracks on this album don't come close to the originals. On a different note, Ectofest Midwest!!! Yay!!! I don't actually live in Ohio for most of the year (away at college in CT) but if it was during the summer, I'd love to help out. Of course, Chicago is not exactly my neck of the woods, but it would definitely be more accessible than the West Coast. :) --Chuck ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 20:29:04 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Vas, Yungchen Lhamo On Tue, Aug 15, 2000 at 11:26:53PM -0600, neal copperman wrote: > After checking out one of the local CD stores (very overpriced, but I did > score a $10 copy of Peter Gabriel's German album, so I was happy), Are you aware that Peter Gabriel did at least two German albums? That's pretty cool. I still have to listen to this one to see if I'm even slightly interested in Peter Gabriel in German. (It's the melting face one, which is the only German PG album I'd heard of.) neal ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Aug 2000 23:12:50 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Vas, Yungchen Lhamo On Sun, Aug 20, 2000 at 10:02:02PM -0600, neal copperman wrote: > Wow, I had no idea. I actually listen to it much more often than the English version, since I like to listen to it while working, when lyrics in a language that I only vaguely understand are less distracting. I hope to get to listen to the German PG4 in the next few days. - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #242 **************************
