This is my first Morcheeba disc so I can't compare it with their past stuff. I have heard some of their songs though and liked them enough to have them in my "To Buy " list ( this one was on sale so I bought it first ). I also agree, some of the songs are a bit poppy and the hip hop sound on some that I normally could do without, aren't really all that bad. The steel drum song just doesn't cut it. Over-all, I really like it and if their other discs are that much better, I'll have to do some more buying this weekend! Sorry about the Rachael Sage forward :) But still, I hope some of you go to that show and report on it! Anyway, there are two in-stores coming up in Boston that I thought some of you would be interested in: Tuesday - Jess Klein at Tower Records on Newbury Street. I believe this one is at 6 or so Friday - Dar Williams at Tower Records in Harvard Square. This one is also around 6ish. I'll be going to both if I can. :) I also wanted to mention my friend Ad Frank to all of you. I believe he would fall under the ecto umbrella but I'm not positive. :) He's a singer/songwriter - his lyrics are sarcastic and bitter sometimes but always brilliant (IMHO). His voice isn't "pretty" but it's definitely original. He used to be in Miles Dethmuffen, which morphed into PermaFrost (I miss that band - you all would've loved them too, if you see their CDs in any used bins GRAB THEM), and now he's also in The Boy Joys, a silly Bee Gees cover band. He should be famous - I'm always wondering why nobody has heard of him! There's info about his CD at http://www1.shore.net/~bettygoo/jackass/af.html but unfortunately no sound clips last I checked. He plays around Boston often (he's done "The Other Side of the Bear" at TT the Bear's a few times - that's acoustic night) and I have "Postpunk at the Cambridgeside Mall" shared on Napster though (with his permission) so if you're around you can do a search for the song title and download it from me. (Or can someone else host it permanently?) (Napigator hates my computer, so that's not an option sorry.) I've rambled enough. I am not in the position to be able to "run with it", as you state. However, I would be willing to provide some sort of assistance (in any way that I could be of help) to someone who would be interested in spearheading the organization of an Ectofest West. Unfortunately circumstances do not allow me to attend this year's Ectofest. :-( I had really hoped that I could make it this year. I wish for everyone that does attend to have a fantastic time and that it is another very successful event! To Chuck and Meth: Would it be possible to get permissions from the artists in advance this time to record a sanctioned audio and video documentation of the event? Perhaps CDs and/or videos/DVDs of this year's Ectofest could be sold to benefit the charities supported by the event and also benefit the artists. I'm absolutely sure that there is a lot of work going into the preparation of the event and that this suggestion may be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to pull off for many reasons (legal, logistical, etc.). I know that there was a good deal of discussion about this after last year's Ectofest. I have for many years attended the Progfest concerts. They generally do document the event via audio and video. They release a CD and video about six months or so after the event. I don't bring this up to stir up debate. I just wanted to ask if it might be a possibility. I do also want to thank everyone that is involved in making Ectofest happen! It is a beautiful event for the Ecto community. Bill M. P.S. - I definitely agree with Paul's suggestion of adding Susan Court to the list of potential artists for an Ectofest West. neal copperman wrote: > Last year there was some brief discussions of the idea of ectofest west, > but nothing really came of them. I would like to hear from the organizers of ectofest east about what is involved in putting something like this on. I was involved with the Institute for Musical Arts for a while and helped them put on one of their festivals. I've also recorded some concerts, filmed a festival and helped with sound on a few occasions. Still, I never got the 'big picture' of how much time or money it takes. Is there any way a step by step process could be documented? Nothing complicated, just a) find a site, b) set a date c) book the musicians (with some info on how to deal with this - - ) d) publicity ... etc. I live in the San Francisco bay area and could definately think of some festival sites around here. I also think the Seattle area would be great. I think it would be wonderful to see this come to fruition.. Actually, Samson released a CPR (a harmony group that included David Crosby - Crosby, somebody, and somebody) album around the time that Many Worlds are Born Tonight was released. I remember a local radio station was really hot for the CPR album. I called them around the time they received Many Worlds from Samson, to encourage them to play Happy. Well apparently the radio stations that are hot for David Crosby harmony groups, aren't too hot for Happy Rhodes. HELLO Samson. Well, all of a sudden woj and I find ourselves planning a trip to San Francisco. :) Some friends of ours are getting married on September 9th, and we just figured out we'll be able to go! I just booked our flights (hidden, unadvertised Internet specials on airline web sites are our friends :), and am waiting for Priceline to get back to me with the verdict on my hotel bid. We'll be in town from the evening of September 8 until the (early) morning of September 12. Neither of us have been to California before, so this is very exciting. I, for one, have wanted to see San Francisco for eons. So now the inevitable call goes out -- there are lots of ectophiles in the area, and we'd like to see as many of you as possible. We're also completely clueless as to what to see and do in San Francisco. (I'm not 100% set on doing the tourist thing, though I do want to see as much of the city as I can in the short time we'll be there.) Any ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated. (Also, advice on whether or not we should rent a car ... I guess a lot of that depends on where we'll be staying, but I don't know how easy it is to get around to the important stuff.)
