Most of the time it will be a random access playlist that will cycle through a library of 2000+ mp3s. I won't be posting playlists at any time, but if you glance at the Winamp play window, you should see the name of the artist and the song title. The web page http://64.34.20.125:8000/played.html will show the last 20 songs played. If I'm at my computer I'll be glad to play requests if I have it. The easiest way to check to see if I'm at the computer is to message me via MSN Messenger (vickiemapes@hotmail.com) or use Napigator to get on Napster server hifi.napster.com and message me. I'll always answer messages if I'm here. I used to say that Shoutcast could only be received by Winamp, but people keep telling me that it can be accessed via Real Player and Window Media Player too. I don't know about that, I haven't confirmed it. Right now we're set up to handle 8 listeners at a time. How do I go about suggesting artists to be included in the Ecto guide? (I have one in mind in particular...) How do I go about making comments on artists already in there? (For example, I love Kittywinder and noticed only two comments in their entry!) Do I simply tell the list about some folks you might not already have heard of but might love, or do I submit it in a more formal manner? I really like this list. I think I'll stick around. The first is that people on ecto have talked about the artist and someone is willing to take on editing the page for them (we have a group of volunteer editors) and the second is that the artist sends in a disc for review. Probably 90% of the Ectophiles Guide pages come from the first method. Any ectophile is welcome to do pages for their favourite artists (or to type up enough of the info that it's easy for me to put the actual page together). If you want to add comments to a page, just post to ecto. You can copy it to me saying the comments are for The Ectophiles' Guide or simply wait for me to email you to ask if I can use the comments. If you copy me it will happen more quickly, but it will _eventually_ happen the other way! As I mentioned recently, we have a backlog of about 1,200 files ready to be researched and edited and put up onsite and we welcome people willing to help with this project in any way. - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 19:10:01 -0400 (EDT) From: Ian Clysdale Subject: Discovery of Happy Wow. I found this list about six or seven months ago, searching for some obscure artists, and constantly turning up references to the ecto archives or the ecto guide. I got on the list, and I've found a number of amazing artists through listening to discussions on here - Rachael Sage comes immediately to mind, as does The Moon Seven Times. But I found it kind of amusing that I'd never actually even heard of Happy Rhodes before this list, and because her stuff was rather hard to find I hadn't gotten around to hunting any of it down until now. Anyways, I just ended up listening to a pile of Vickie's MP3s (and no, I don't want to re-open that debate), and have been blown away. I'm now going to be trying to hunt down CDs of her more findable stuff - does anyone have suggestions? Many Worlds seems to still be available, but everywhere I've seen lists it as special order, and I seem to recall hearing something on here about her Samson catalogue no longer being available. And does anyone have any suggestions as for the earlier stuff beyond occasionally checking eBay? Whatever stash of old Happy recordings existed in places has by now probably been picked pretty clean. It seems like your only chances of finding the older stuff is to wander into a town that no one has previously been to and see if they have been on the shelf there for years. Or the chance of stumbling across them used. I'm pretty sure there are no stores that currently have the old stuff in stock. I don't think I can get all caught up tonight, but I may as well make a start. About a week and a half ago, I was looking through the free weekly here in Albuquerque when I was shocked to discover that Vas was going to be playing a show in Santa Fe. In small print on the bottom, it also said "with Yungchen Lhamo". Now, either of these artists was worthy of a trip to Santa Fe, so I was pretty excited. After checking out one of the local CD stores (very overpriced, but I did score a $10 copy of Peter Gabriel's German album, so I was happy), and a lovely Japanese dinner, Jeff, Mary and I headed over to the Museum of International Folk Art for the concert. We were a half hour early, but that was still plenty of time to hang out in frustration after we learned that the show was sold out. I was set on staying and trying to score some tickets, or at least look as pitiful as possible and see if we could stand in the back. The tickets didn't happen, and pitiable isn't one of my strong suits, so neither of these things worked. However, with a little encouragement from the cello player in Vas, the people running the show agreed to leave the doors to the small auditorium open, and let those of us who didn't seem interested in leaving to hang out in the lobby and watch the show from there. Yungchen Lhamo did more or less the same show she did about a year and a half ago when Jeff and I saw her in Arizona. This was not a horrible thing, since that show was fantastic. It lost a bit in power and intimacy by watching from the lobby, but it was still a beautiful show. She performed a full set of completely unaccompanied voice (except for the song where she made the audience chant), with gentle dance motions complimenting the music beautifully. When her set ended, the museum guards sequestered us in a small hallway to ensure that we did not attempt to sneak into the auditorium with the ticketholders. However, as a reward for being good, they did go off and find us some chairs to sit in. So about 10 of us sat more comfortably in the lobby for Vas' set. Vas didn't really lose anything by that set-up. They were great. The lead singer is an Iranian woman (largely featureless, Jeff commented, with her long dark hair and pale face) with a beautiful voice. While I thought it was possible that she was singing in a foreign language, it turns out that she just sings in no language at all. The sounds is very strongly in the Dead Can Dance vein, but with a stronger emphasis on Eastern rhythms and sounds. The other main member of the group is a guy who plays an incredible array of percussion. For the live show, they also had an excellent cello player and a keyboard player/backup singer. The music was really beautiful, and even the drum solos weren't boring. I highly recommend any of Vas' three albums. I don't think I have the energy to write about Mary Lydia Ryan's house concert last Friday, but I'll come back to that one eventually. neal np: Mary Lydia Ryan - Mary Lydia Ryan ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #237 **************************
