(I'd also read a very positive review earlier.) It's darker and weirder than her very charming first solo album =flightsafety=, and I think stronger: it's the first 2000 album that's made me sit up and take notice (the new Sleater-Kinney being a bit underwhelming). If anybody out there is desperately in need of Heather Nova's =Glowstars=, I know a NYC store that has a couple import copies (in the $25 range, if I remember correctly). They also had an import of the brand-new live album, for which they wanted $33.00(!). Wasn't even tempted. It's about 70 minutes long, about half from =Oyster= and half from =Siren=, with Springsteen's "I'm on Fire" as encore. Looks worth picking up when it's released domestically. Joseph Zitt doesn't know "Gates of Delirium"? Interesting. I would probably say that =Relayer= (whence the "song" comes) is the best Yes album (followed closely by =Tales from Topographich Oceans=). I still have a vivid memory of a terrific live performance of "Gates" at the end of which the keening pedal steel lines of "Soon" floated out in the open air of the Hollywood Bowl in 1975. For those near New York City, Kristeen Young will be doing another every-Thursday-at-CBs Gallery stand in September. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 10:53:11 -0600 (MDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: falcon ridge 2000 On Mon, 24 Jul 2000, meredith wrote: > WARNING: VERY LONG AND FILLED WITH TALK OF ACOUSTIC INSTRUMENTS But still entertaining... That's the title of her album. I was given a copy a few weeks ago, and have only had a chance to listen to it once. I was pretty into it for the first 6 songs, and then got kind of bored. (That's not a suitable ectoguide comment! I wanna listen more first. It was just one car listen driving back from Roswell and seeing Roswell: The Musical.) When I was more attentive, on the earlier parts of the album, I was thinking urban-folk. It has a nice, vaguely bluesy folk sound, but the songs are definitely city songs. neal np: maria - jane siberry ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 15:22:59 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: DC ecto:Basque now, Gryner later On Tue, 25 Jul 2000, Craig Gidney wrote: > Hey DC-area ectophiles: > > Just to remind you all, Basque, everyone's favorite > ethereal singer-bass guitar duo, is coming to the > Velvet Lounge on U Street at 8pm or so tomorrow. Oops, that statement was made from the not-too-valid economic position of Karen-centricism, which involves the translation of all currencies into NZ$, which is currently worth very little, but several years ago ordering from online US cd-stores was the stuff of giddy glee. So cds are expensive there for NZers, but not for USers. How would one properly evaluate cd prices - percentage of average disposable income? There may be wider range of new cds prices here, but perhaps I didn't find the really discounted places over there. Translated to *US* currency, tax included in price, cds in New Zealand range from cheap compilations from US$3.60 to back catalogue cds at $4.50-$5, and locally released items usually sell between $11.20 to $14.50, and imports would usually be under US$18. My father has discovered that it is cheaper for him to buy most old and new Bob Dylan albums here and pay postage to the States than for his US Bobbie-buddies to purchase them there, or in Australia where our cds are manufactured! Not too different from the States overall, though selection is worse. I just assumed that with the sheer number of people in big cities in the States, top40 and back catalogue cds would be heavily discounted in comparison with here. karen. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 18:23:39 -0500 From: burp@mindspring.com (Scott Burger) Subject: Re: laziness of Scott >At 8:33 AM -0500 7/25/00, Scott Burger wrote: >>Hmmm....at least I provoked a few responses. In that case, the average income here in Albuquerque is dramatically less than in the Baltimore/Washington area. Course, CD prices don't tend to reflect this. In fact, seems to me that you are more likely to find good cheap cd stores in bigger urban areas, which I think is just numbers of people, rather than incomes. > There may be wider range of new cds prices here, but perhaps I didn't find > the really discounted places over there. I did not realize discs were so cheap in New Zealand! Is that the same for Australia too? I was under the impression that new discs in Australia were something like $18 to $25 (US). I thought that accounted for why imports in the US (from places like the UK and Australia) typically ran around $28-30 (US). > Not too different from the States overall, though selection is worse. I > just assumed that with the sheer number of people in big cities in the > States, top40 and back catalogue cds would be heavily discounted in > comparison with here. In big cities, I see limited back catalog at around $10. But at my favorite store in Baltimore (Sound Garden), many new releases are $11.99 and $12.99, with stuff that they aren't pushing at the moment $13.99. In Albuquerque, all the good CD stores have new releases in the 15.99 to 18.99 range (with most in the high part of that range). 15.99 is usually the sale price. neal np: Your Bag - Lida Husik ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2000 19:07:14 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: Basque in D.C.
