I have not decided what to do with my music collection after I pass away, but I've been thinking about it a lot lately. (I'm also pondering on the question of insuring the lot, which would mean I'd spend more money on an insurance and less on discs.... awwww.... tough one!) I'm currently in the process of making the index of my collection available on www.marcelrijs.com , and I guess I will take it from there. My dream would be to have a collection that would be so complete and relevant that it will belong in a library, but our national library (which I work for as you can see in my sig -- if you can read Dutch that is...) does not have an audio section. Well perhaps if I work here long enough I will make them have one.... I'm not thinking of sending the whole collection to the Library of Congress (I understand they do have a music collection) although the British Library would be tempting (but I don't know if they collect music ; probably not...) Tough one indeed. 2. My favourite HR lyric is hard to decide on, but "I want to go back to the trees where my art was born" is an early favourite. The chorus of "Mother sea" is very good too. My least favourite is easier: "Poo-hoo-hoo on you" from one of the early songs on HR 1 or 2. I rarely play those two, although "Suicide song" is very moving. 3. I'd like to help in the call for the HR COVERS PROJECT. I read that "Foghorn J Fornorn" has only managed to find 6 music contributors for the Anniversary CD so far. I'm pretty sure there's much more talent on this list than that. I know that recording a cover may seem like a daunting task, but it's very rewarding when you've succeeded in making it totally your own product! I know, I've done it a few times -- and I have no talent at all! :-) E-mail the man! Kind regards, Marcel Rijs afd. Previously said: > > if you buy a cd, are you allowed, morally or legally, > > to make a copy of it for personal use? I think yes, for your own personal use.... Examples: I have CD-R copies of Happy's HR-5 and Grey Eye Glances' special edition "Save the Music" CD's in my car right now. I own the originals, sitting on my shelf at home. I sure as heck do not want to risk theft or melt down of these special CD's, so I made a copy for the car. But on the other hand, I keep a few standard CD's like YES, King Crimson, Moody Blues in the car. They’re a good thing, they’re not a bad thing. I had this artistic inclination, I developed these skills for drawing and painting - also from my father, I believe, although my mother is also very talented, she’s an incredible artist. But again, I’d be drawing, and in art class, there are all these rules. The shading has to be a certain way, and the subject matter has to be a certain thing. I remember being in art in fourth grade, and they would always tell us what we were going to draw that day. And I thought, that’s not very inspiring - someone’s going to tell me what to draw. They even went so far as to say, “Look at all the pictures hanging in the room” - they had prints in the room, one was like a Manet and there was a Van Gough, you know just different prints. And they’d just say, “Pick one and draw it,” and I’d would think, “Why? Somebody already did!” You know? That always frustrated me. So i escaped inside my head for most of my life, I still haven’t learned how not to do that, incidentally, so I lived in my head, and I just loved making up my own stuff. Monsters are an easy thing to make up because you don’t have to follow anyone else’s guidelines for anatomy - no one can tell you, “This monster is not anatomically correct!”, no one could say [ kinda science-geek voice ] “By the laws of physics, that creature could not possibly walk with those legs.” You know, fine, you’ve got a point there - no one can tell you what color they should be or what it should look like, so I found a lot of freedom in that. So I started drawing monsters. I liked the fact that they were kind of repellant to other people. To me, they were always guardians, something that I could have that was my own. I think that’s therapy." Hope that was informative. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 09:56:19 -0700 From: phil@tiaranetworks.com Subject: song lyrics!!! Favorite lyrics? It carries the flow-controlling title _if_then_else_, and, in spite of my apprehensions, turned out to be rather nice. Now, I really disliked The Gathering's previous album _How to Measure a Planet_. The way I see it, that one was a doomed attempt at being something they're not, namely, excellent musicians in the technical and "artistic" sense. Listening to it felt like drinking stale, warm tapwater (though I'll grant that, heard live, it felt more like being immersed in warm tapwater, which is rather more pleasant). So, I was hesitant about getting this new album... before buying it on their past merit anyway (if someone knows how to hesitate more effectively, please drop me a few pointers). Fortunately, on _if_then_else_ the band is back at doing what they can do: intense, beautiful and fierce rock music with some wonderful singing. The Gathering have a background as a metal band, but have been taking steps away from that area ever since the singer Anneke joined the band. This one is a minor step backwards in that sense, but overall, even though the sound is not unlike that on 1997's _Nighttime Birds_, it's not terribly heavy, and would perhaps be appreciated by some of those Ectophiles who've not been receptive to The Gathering before due to metal allergies. Missing is the occasionally too tedious guitar-pounding that marred the earlier album _Mandylion_ in particular... gone is, however, also the courageous pioneering spirit that makes _Mandylion_ stay my favorite The Gathering album. I hear the sound of compromise in their later works, and I don't think I like it. Still, _if_then_else_ is a worthy album with beautiful moments. The lyrics are, as usual, somewhat inane, but that can be ignored. :) Those who liked _Nighttime Birds_ will probably like _if_then_else_ as well. Those who liked _Mandylion_ but not _Nighttime Birds_ might still want to give this one a spin. Those who liked _How to Measure a Planet_... well, I won't say anything about that. That's about it for now... take care, Juha n.p. Lamb: _Fear of Fours_ a library copy, this one... but, already now on my second listen, a begin to feel convinced I'm going to fail at hesitating once again... bad for the wallet P.S. I believe the new Vrttin disc, _Ilmatar_, will be unleashed on the rest of the world soon, if it hasn't already happened. If you like the band at all, do go out and buy it - this one's right up there with their very best. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 19:23:26 -0400 From: meredith Subject: some interesting KaTe "news" Hi!
