Marcel and all of my friends on Ecto, As I have mentioned during the few times that I have able to contribute to the list over the past four or five months, I have been primarily relegated to lurkdom for many reasons. Most of these involve a very hectic life. I have been keeping up with the list on a nightly basis and very much enjoy the discussions. Due to health issues with Katheleen (because of complications from spinal surgery) we have been unable to work on music together for nearly a year and a half. This has been a source of great sadness, disappointment and frustration for both of us. Katheleen had suggested that I find another avenue for my musical pursuits until the time when we could work together again. I am currently working on a new musical project with several other long-standing friends and musical compatriots. I have mentioned to them my interest in contributing to the proposed Ectopia II and 10th Anniversary CDs. Please count me/us in on both of these projects. Thanks, Bill M. I would certainly be willing to compile the disc but since I live in Europe this may not be the most central place to do so, so perhaps we would need those people too. And then there's the sleeve design: there's got to be some creative painters, graphic designers and/or other artists on the list. > > _If_ we're doing this, and I hope we do, we will have to start now. Here is their URL: http://www.artist-shop.com/ Here is a snippet from their site: "Welcome to The Artist Shop, a music store dedicated to the independent artist putting out his/her own product. The items we display we buy directly from the artist or his/her own company. When you buy from these artists you can take pride in the knowledge that more of your dollar is going directly to the artist than when you buy from a mainstream, corporate, big business, big bucks, impersonal, conglomerate label. And that means you're investing in the future of these artists and their continued creation of new work." This may be an avenue for Happy to distribute her music in a fashion that is independent of a label. She has definitely been successful taking the independent D.I.Y. approach in the past. I honestly don't see that Samson brought much value to Happy. Maybe I missed something along the way though. Another option would be for her to see if there is a label listed on the Artist Shop where she felt some synergy. Many excellent artists have labels listed there. These include a few independent labels from some of my favorite artists such as Steve Hackett's Camino Records and Andy Latimer's Camel Productions. Discipline (Fripp and company) and LoLo (Bon Lozaga) are also listed there. The only drawback to this suggestion may be finding a label that would have the financial resources needed to promote Happy effectively. What is Happy looking for out of label for the next go around? I also agree with all of the comments and suggestions of Bob, Joseph, Fog and Meth. The labels suggested seem reasonable. I also agree that it wouldn't be wise to start an e-mail campaign on Happy's behalf to any labels. I believe that it would cause more harm than good. All the best to Happy in her future endeavors!!! But it then occurred to me that a company with more promotional muscle, aside from the question of whether or not it uses it or not, would be the agent of choice at this stage of her career. Southport Records is a highly regarded independent jazz label based here in Chicago. It so happens that they have a subsidiary label, called Northport, which does rock music. I know nothing about Northport's artist roster, but intuitively I think the Southport/Northport organization might be one worth Happy's while to liase with. Let's see here. It's ecto's anniversary coming up, Happy's been dropped from Samson, Vickie's busy posting mp3's to Napster, and people are thinking of adding mp3's to the Ectoguide. Lots of conversations have been going on about other artists who have been similarly dropped, and have soldiered on, with varying degrees of success. Here's a thought. For Ecto's anniversary, could we not start our own independent record label? What better tribute to Happy than to produce her next album ourselves? Not just a bootleg, but *the real thing*. The collective talents of the ectophiles as displayed in the ectopia collection, the ectofest of last summer, and our own collective obsession about music and the arts in general makes it seem a not-entirely-unreasonable idea for us to consider. On the other hand, considering that most ectophiles consider ecto to be a back burner hobby at the most, and that the majority of us are years behind in our digests, it may be a tad overambitions. But it's still a nifty thought, don't you think? Anyways, I'm off to ponder other imponderables, and find a bicycle for my fish. - --Kay np: Various, "Istampitta" (Upbeat renaissance dance music.) nr: Furniture catalogs...I'm redecorating. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Since it was a long ride, we all brought along mix tapes. We were playing mine when "100 Years" came up. Everyone on the bus ( who was awake ) immediately asked me who the artist was, the album, the style of music, etc., and strained to hear it over the clatter of the windows and the bus engine. This was in the midst of a group of people with musical tastes ranging from purely classical to hip hop and everything in between. I happen to think that Happy Rhodes is one of the best things going musically out there right now, right up there with Bjork, and her music has the potential to enlighten a helluva lot of people. Why not actively organize some kind of campaign right now? Being physical letters, mailed to record companies, en masse, or otherwise. A record label deal seemed a step in the right direction, as far as gaining wider exposure and more resources goes, and the world needs to hear her music. - - Katherine ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2000 07:58:54 -0700 From: RAVEN@igc.org Subject: re[2]: spamster At 05:37 07/06/2000, Tom Ditto wrote: >To be a thief >You must be honest. > >Bob Dylan I believe the line is: "To live outside the law you must be honest" "Absolutely Sweet Marie"... from the "Blonde On Blonde" release. I played editor for Ectopia, so I have a little bit of experience here. As I said back at that time, I've lost or forgotten what little creative musical talent I ever had, so I don't expect to contribute any composition. The only musical instrument I play these days is the stereo, but I'm fairly good at that! The first word of warning I would give to any prospective editor is to be prepared to produce the whole thing yourself. There were many people who expressed interest in helping with the production of Ectopia in the beginning. As the day grew closer, some could no longer offer their services, and in other cases the logistics of splitting the work up overcame the benefit of doing so. I don't mean that as discouragement. I was a little worried when I came to the realization I'd be doing it all myself, but it really turned into a nice side project that didn't really interfere too much. Some would say it kept me off the streets! And your customers, the people who read this list, are a very patient, understanding, and generous bunch. For Ectopia, I think we started talking about it in January. I put no hard and fast deadline at the time, and submissions dried up around May. I started doing the editing around then and began accepting orders and shipping in June. Of course, many of the participants already had CDs or demos done prior to all this and simply sent me a copy. This anniversary effort sounds like it will be mostly freshly recorded stuff, so you should probably expect it to take longer for submissions to come in. It would probably be a better idea to set a fixed deadline now rather than floating it like I did with Ectopia. You are trying to meet an anniversary, whereas Ectopia was... whenever. I'm willing to play editor again. I'll ask Marcel to contact me about how he'd like to proceed. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2000 21:11:54 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Anniversary thing Hi!
