Hi all, I am a little surprised that I didn't hear any more reactions re: the debate of our 10th anniversary celebration. I think the idea of a Happy Covers disc was a great one and if everyone would be eager to do this it could turn out to be a very nice celebration indeed. So, to get very concrete right now: are there any people who want to record a cover of a Happy Rhodes song? I would certainly be willing to compile the disc but since I live in Europe this may not be the most central place to do so, so perhaps we would need those people too. And then there's the sleeve design: there's got to be some creative painters, graphic designers and/or other artists on the list. _If_ we're doing this, and I hope we do, we will have to start now. A year goes by so quickly! Kind regards, Marcel Rijs afd. You could make an Internet business model out of this, and probably get it funded. Get permission from bands to use 30 seconds of their songs, fill the remaining track time with ads (to make the file size the same as the full track), then create all kinds of bogus music servers and spam the hell out of Napster, Gnutella, etc. with the fake mp3s. The band gets advertising and fights theft, you make a little money selling the ads, and the Net gets clogged with so much music spam that it gets difficult and costly to find intact pirated tracks. If Napster raises technical barriers, you have a financial incentive to overcome them. And the pirates can't very well call on the law to protect them, can they? [...] We (Nettwerk) just did this for the new Barenaked Ladies single, actually. You can download the single from Napster, but it's got voiceovers from two of the guys in the band telling people about the September release for the new album and stuff. Search for the track "Pinch Me." The version that's shorter (4 mins or so) is funnier. It's past midnight here, into the hours of blue static, grey fatigue, and dark, damp night with rain hissing in the trees outside. I've just gotten back from seeing Veda Hille at the 12 Bar Club in London. It's a small, very small space, three rows of six chairs each and lots of standing, as well as a low-hanging "gallery" that I decided to ignore, taking up my position in the front row. The place was packed, partly due to a rave preview in Time Out. She had three openers: first an anonymous and very ordinary guy, blokish and dull. Next came someone called Jamie Lawson, who was PHENONEMAL. So into it, so ON, so wired into each and every word of his songs with every fibre of his body, I was enthralled. Just him, a guitar, and whatever demons possessed him. He has no cd's out, but he's DEFINITELY one to watch. Veda came on and played for just over an hour. She was great. I only knew "You Do Not Live...", and it was fantastic hearing other material. She was very warm, very open, humorous and ----well, brilliant. She won the audience over who were either wholly ignorant of who she was or who had raised expectations from the Time Out review, and could have done an encore or two, from the reaction afterwards. I feel honoured to have seen her. Well, i'm off to bed. back to the real world tomorrow. adamk nr -- The Bone People (and this is going to take a while) np - From the Blue House - Lauren Hoffman ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #190 **************************
