What a great idea, now why didn't I think of this? I've done this with some success with Tori Amos and Kate Bush songs, and I think that legally we're not obliged to ask the artist (i.e. Happy, in this case) for permission, although it would be nice to do so. More important may be the question: are we up for this? I think Ectopia sufficiently proved your creative abilities (yours, not mine...... ;-) and if more people feel like doing a Happy Cover (ouch, that sounds dreadful doesn't it? A Rhodes Cover then..) this could be very successful indeed. Come on, let's start rolling on this one. Kind regards, Marcel Rijs afd. Hello ectoland, I just went into a local record store while going for lunch (because they had a new Belle and Sebastian album in the window, which I didn't know about), and they were playing some music which I didn't recognize but was obviously Peter Gabriel singing. I asked what it was and they pointed me to a new imported album. Needless to say, I bought a copy. It's called "Ovo - The Millenium Show", and consists of two CD's, one in a jewel box and the other in a cardboard sleave, and a book with an illustrated story in it. Further examination indicates that it has something to do with a show being put on at the Millenium Dome in London. I must be getting old, or very out of it. There was a time when I would have been outside a record store waiting for it to open the day a new PG album came out. Now one can just casually appear without my knowing anything about it. Anyway, I'm now itching to go home so I can listen to it. In the mean time, what I'm wondering is 1) what's it all about?, and 2) how come no one's talking about it? love and peace, - -Anthony ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2000 18:55:37 -0400 From: Stuart Myerburg Subject: Re: New Peter Gabriel? In the mean time, > what I'm wondering is 1) what's it all about?, and 2) how come no one's > talking about it? I was wondering why no one was talking about it as well. So, I guess I will! I ordered the CD from the Real World web site and just got it late last week. So, I have only listened to it twice. It's the music Peter Gabriel composed for a performance at the Millennium Dome. There are some instrumentals, collaborations with other singers (like Elizabeth Fraser, Alison Goldfrapp, etc.), and some songs where Peter actually sings himself. If I had to describe it, it's like a cross between his music for _The Last Temptation of Christ_ and _Us_. The standout tracks for me are "The Time of the Turning," which sounds like a duet between Peter and Kate, but is actually a duet between Richie Havens and Alison Goldfrapp, an instrumental called "The Weavers Reel" which has a very Celtic sound to it, and "Father, Son," a classic PG ballad a la "Here Comes the Flood" sung by PG himself. Overall, I like the music even after hearing it only twice. The story that goes along with it is rather cutesy and silly. But you can ignore that and just enjoy new PG music, even if it's not really a new album per se. I got my copy yesterday and only listened to it once, but I'm very impressed. Beside the ballads and orchestral soundscapes there are interesting distorted rhythms and sounds. Now I can't await Peter's real solo album that will hopefully see the light of day in the new millennium. If possible, try to get your hands on the limited edition with the extra enhanced CD and the comic booklet. Dirk ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #176 **************************
