Over the years I have become active in other online communities, and have been reading this list a bit less carefully than before and posted to it less; but in many ways I miss the old days. Some of the mainstays from those days are still here, others are not, and we have many new people; but the spirit of ecto remains unchanged. So let's hoist our fuzzy blue drinks in a toast to a great community spawned by great music. Here's to us all. Let's make the tenth anniversary memorable indeed. Daddy I'm fine should be the next single..but I suppose that would mean bleeping out the f-word which is always annoying. I hate bleeps. Luckily swedish radio and tv doesnt do them so foreign artists are always surprised that they can say anything they want and not be censored. Any ideas?) Well I can believe that the Internet has existed for 9 years (and more), since I'm on it for 6 already. Harder to believe that the Kate Bush list, love-hounds, started almost 15 years ago. I mean, how many KaTeFans were online then? 5? 10? :) Anyway, the reason for mentioning love-hounds here, is that someone came up with the idea of a booklet of some sort with everyone's favourite posts from 15 years of love-hounds. I don't know if a similar idea would work for ecto since we're not so much working on expression as much as they are. (The countless parodies on Kate Bush songs over there are memorable in themselves....) The most obvious answer would be a CD or a CD set, but I bet there are some people who make objections w.r.t. copyrights... :) but the Happy Birthday projects were something I would recommend for an Ecto Birthday project. If everyone would contribute MP3's or recordings of their favourite music from the past 10 years, that would make in interesting compilation. We could discuss the terms of course, I would imagine: - - No more than 2 songs from one artist (except Happy, perhaps?) - - Preferably songs that are no longer available in stores (to avoid the copyright issues, although one could argue that even rare tracks contain copyrights but oh well.... at least we're not harming any sales...) - - Plus deciding if we're making Audio-CD's or one CD with some 700 minutes of music in MP3 form.............. Oh well, this is my imagination -- put in yours! Kind regards, Marcel Rijs afd. My dream project for this list would be (to steal a title) "I Want to Be Happy...", a collection of covers of Happy tunes recorded by ectophiles, with an accompanying booklet of related writings by ectophile nonmusicians. We have a year to work on it... (assuming, of course, that Happy would agree to covers of her tunes. I know that legally, she has to agree to cover recordings, but it would be appropriate to check with her anyway, just in case she has strong objections). n.p. ProjeKct X: Heaven and Hell n.r. See below. The original, for francophones, is online at http://www.club-culture.com/poprock/jorane.htm. Another search discovered that she has another album by the name "Jorane," and a Demo CD out. (Her full name is Jorane Peltier.) All discs contain similar track listings, but the demo also has a live version of "Machaut." - --Kay - ----------------------------------------- Jorane presents her first album. Originally from Quebec, she discovered the cello during her studies in music at Cegep. Since then, she has experimented with rare harmonies, mixing cello and voice with an avant-garde instrumentation, thereby creating surprising combinations of sound. Gifted with a solid voice, she accompanies herself on the cello. A unique voice, sweet and melancholy on some songs, then rebellious and powerful on others. Two instruments, the voice and the cello, slide one into the other like two lovers. Author-composer-interpreter, Jorane does not make rock, nor blues, nor jazz, nor classical music. So what does she do? Quite simply, she does "Jorane." A voice in echo, tribal colors, there are songs in a quite personal style and in an original expression. We feel that this young artist (23 years old) has the taste for freedom of expression, well above the normal commercialization found on modern releases. Her music is part feline, part ingenue. A disc of strange and enveloping atmosphere, unique in its genre. The artistry is to be noted. Made with a deep sobriety accentuated with an angelic touch. The musicians who accompany her are the following: Alexandre Dumas and Bernard Falaise (Electric Guitars and Organ), Jean-Francois Lemieu (Electric Bass), Alexis Martin (Drums and percussion), Patrick Camire (Trumpet), Sebastian Nasra (Vibraphone), Thomas Babin (Upright Bass) Jorane asks us to take a beautiful musical journey. Her disc contains an intense inner sensibility. Happy Listening! - --Jacques Thibault, tr.
