I just plucked "I Megaphone" out of the drawer the other day and gave it a spin and was blown away by how brilliant it was. I'd forgotten quite how powerful a record it was. It got me wondering what Imogen was up to, so I did a bit of searching around. The Ectophiles Guide turned up a comment from me, which is always fun to find out! However, the link to the artist's webste links to a domain name registry page, so there ain't no Imogen Heap website at www.imogenheap.com. Bizarrely, the Universal Records website also links to that non-existent page! So, anyone out there in Ectoland have any gossip? It's been a while since I heard anything about Imogen. The Library of Congress keeps everything it receives in a valid copyright application. Nothing is ever thrown out if it is in the form of a valid application. Little, if anything, has ever been "lost". The volume of material is so great, that it may seem to the uninitiated that there isn't a record of some old SF paperbacks, but these can be found if a researcher is qualified to go into the collection. If there is a problem with the application itself, then it is returned with the registration copy to the sender. Since CD-R's are inexpensive, there should be no problem protecting your recorded musical work. Fill out the form, enclose the $30 with a single copy, and enjoy a lifetime plus 50 years of protection for the copyrighted work. It's a gift for indies. By way of contrast, a patent costs thousands of dollars and has a 20 year life from day of application. Considering the "copyright be damned" attitude of some intoxicated pirates out there in Ectoland, the benefits extended to creative artists for this protection is a blessing. Naturally, the Library of Congress honors the copyrights themselves, and they will not publish copies from their registration copies while the copyrights are still in force. They do internal archival copying (this is allowable under the law), and they do publish from these when it appears that the Libary is the only source for historically important out-of-copyright titles. I spent yesterday looking at animation from 1902-1919 recovered from paper negatives that were deposited in LoC early in the century just past. I was amazed to see that their videotape had a copyright notice in the name of the Library of Congress! I guess they were protecting their hard work of recovering the images from deteriorating records. I know that wasn't easy (or all that successful. I could have done better, I think). They had also thrown on the obligatory piano track, recorded by a contemporary improvisational pianist. LoC does allow _qualified_ researchers to have access to these materials. Petition for access is controlled, (typically you must have published and can show you have exhausted all other venues), but if you are a serious scholar, there is no better place to learn about American music than the venerable LoC, often described as the largest library in the world. It's that large, because in order to secure protection, everyone must send them copies of whatever it is they want to copyright. It's a good system, and it works quite well. The object is not to make money (obviously), but rather to keep our culture intact. I meant "copyright laws be damned!" facetiously. Sort of an admission that, despite what we might want to do about it, these "libraries" will exist on the web(and elsewhere), and I have ambivalent feelings about the restrictions copyright can place on certain types of actions... A couple years back I interviewed Fred Ho (aka Fred Wei-Han Houn) an avant garde baritone saxophonist... We talked about copyright and even discussed Negativland (whose 1991 a capella mix of U 2 appeared on the companion CD to "Sound Off")... I am all for copyright protecting the rights of the artist (more generally, I believe that the artist should have every tool at his/her disposal to control the distribution, airplay, etc. of his or her work... copyright stuff is but a subset of that)... When it becomes a(n often petty) case of nibbling at a (large) record company's profits... well, I think that that's all well and good from a business point of view, right up until it impinges on the art-stuff)... sorry to be so eloquent :) I recommend "Fair Use" at http://www.negativland.com/fairuse.html 'nuff for now... Thanks for letting me share... Apparently, the new single "No Man's Woman" is getting lots of airplay. You can hear plenty of sound clips from the Atlantic site. It sounds great... I'm very excited. Just received the new Juliana Hatfield, Aimee Mann, and Jill Sobule yesterday. Reports to follows. Here's the Sinead review: >From Rolling Stone--they give it 3.5 stars. Also on Atlantic Records homepage. "I know that I have done many things/To give you reason not to listen to me," sings Sinead O'Connor in "The Lamb's Book of Life," one of several new songs that ask forgiveness from her lovers, father and fans. Repentant and yet still gloriously provocative, Faith and Courage speaks with the jaw-clenched directness for which O'Connor is both famous and infamous. What it does most convincingly is give listeners reason to once again embrace the Irish firebrand. It's designed like a mainstream R&B blockbuster, the kind that has a different producer-songwriter-player for nearly every track. Unexpected pairings draw out opposite aspects of the singer's complex musical personality. The result is an album of approachable pop that's both defiant and diverse and that flaunts rock's swagger, electronica's experimentalism, folk's introspection and hip-hop's social critique. O'Connor doesn't abandon the national identity she quietly asserted on her previous two releases; Faith and Courage layers playful Irish folk whistles and O'Connor's peerless cry into contemporary street sonics while navigating between inner spirituality and the conflicted outside world. The two domains meet on the show-stopping, string-laden anthem "No Man's Woman," where she declares she won't concede to male domination because she's already in love -- with a "spirit." Sounds hokey on paper, but because O'Connor -- the original Alanis - -- rocks so hard, the sentiment is nothing short of spine-tingling. Another compact doozy, "Daddy I'm Fine," flips from looping reggae to double-time punk thrash while neatly encapsulating the singer's transformation from frustrated Dublin girl to world-class, ass-kickin' mom. Even serene ballads like "Emma's Song" suggest tension, ambivalence, mystery. It's a tribute to O'Connor's guiding presence that dub-funk masters Adrian Sherwood and Skip McDonald, Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, ex-Ednaswap rockers Scott Cutler and Anne Preven, Fugee Wyclef Jean, ex-Public Image Ltd. bassist Jah Wobble, Destiny's Child producer Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs and ambient guru Brian Eno can all contribute without overpowering the album's star. With its dauntless style juxtapositions and the singer's strongest songs in a decade, Faith and Courage restores this wayward soul to major rock-goddess status even as she strips down to her human essence. This is the Sin'ad album you've been wanting for years. I remember it as being one of the most faithful adapations of sci-fi book, and one that was concerned with presenting the ideas set forth by the book, rather than adapting some features and sticking in explosions and gun battles. Of course, part of my faith in the movie may have had something to do with my being 11 at the time... It appears that others agree, as for the past 20 years it has been PBS' most requested program, PBS stations have been flooded with mail and email asking for a repeat showing for years, and one station had so many requests to its Video Finder Service that it needed to keep a separate database for Lathe requests. Unfortunately, the contract for the film had originally been written to allow one or two showings only, with no thought given to what would happen to the film after that, thereby confusing and tying up the rights to badly that it was never shown again and was never released on video. (There are a few bootleg copies around that all trace back to home tapes of the original airing.) Anyway, the rights have finally been settled, and PBS is showing the movie in June (here in Philadelphia on this Sunday at 9pm and on 6/11 at 11pm). You don't get the change to relive your childhood very often. (Of course, I would have HAD a tape of it for the last 20 years if my mother hadn't messed with the VCR that afternoon--one of the those 20 lbs. Panasonic/Quasar monsters where setting it timer involved flicking a switch, which always produced a giant THUNK sound from the machine!)
