Their album "Ripe" is one of my alltime pop faves, and I have been wondering whatever happened to them after the one album and three/four singles. The excellent ballad "Why aren't you in love with me" features Jimmy Somerville on guest vocals, a remarkable voice as well... The closing track "Never too late" has a very moving lyric, IMO. So does anyone know whatever happened to the two women forming the Banderas? I think they were featured in a "Where are they now" article in Q Magazine sometime but I can't locate it. I made a brief mention of this a few weeks ago, but hadn't commented too much. It was one of the few discs that I bought based on hearing it in a listening station. I don't spend a lot of time on them and do better letting an album percolate into my conciousness at home or in the car rather than giving it a pass/fail rating based on a few minutes of scattered listening. Anyway, it made a good impression, so I picked it up and have really enjoyed it. It's a pretty varied album. The first song is kinda moody ectronic and jazz-inflected, kinda like Elysian Fields and a host of others. The second track (Charm Attack) is a startling shift, one of those brilliant catchy lo-fi pop tunes that you want to listen to all summer, blaring off your car stereo as you drive down the highway with all your windows down. it was actually the diversity of those two songs, and the catchy fun of the second, that made me buy the album. I've tracked it a handful of times and have enjoyed it, but most of the rest of it hasn't really sunk in too much. Nothing else seemed as catchy as Charm Attack, though there is still a fair amount of variety on it. I suspect it'll grow on me over time. I've seen it on sale pretty cheap ($9.99). It's also a multi-media disc, though I haven't stuck it in my computer yet. neal np: My Roots Are Showing - Natalie MacMaster nr: Motherless Brooklyn - Jonathan Lethem ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 08:58:22 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: The Changelings news For those interested, NYC, Boston, Atlanta shows... - --N >X-Sender: nomad3@pop.mindspring.com >Mime-Version: 1.0 >Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 00:28:22 -0400 >To: changelings@draven.net >From: Changelings >Subject: New York, Boston and Atlanta shows > >T h e C H A N G E L I N G S > > wil play > >Saturday, May 27th in NYC, NY > with The Mirror Reveals > http://www.middlepillar.com/mpp/mpp997/ >at Albion (Downtime,Batcave) > 251 West 30th Street b/w 7th and 8th Avenues > (212) 695-2747 > > >Sunday, May 28th in Boston, MA > with Reflecting Skin > http://www.reflectingskin.net/ >at The Middle East (Down) $7 > http://www.mideastclub.com > Located at 472-480 Mass Ave in Central Sq at > the corner of Brookline St and Mass Ave. > (617) 864-EAST > >Also Playing in Atlanta >Saturday, June 17 at the Red Light Cafe > >A NEW CD of The Changelings soundtrack recordings >will be available in late June. > > > >http://www.changelings.com >http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/89/the_changelings.html > - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 12:05:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: Re: leona naess and kate bush -- help! There's a web site at http://www.leonanaess.com/ and it has a "jukebox" feature, so you can listen to "Charm Attack" and a couple other songs (albeit very low fi). Note: the web site is incredibly elaborate with lots of flash animation, so beware if you have an older computer/browser. (A friend who has an older PC called me last night, asking me to go to a certain artist's web site and read the how-to-order-the-CD info to him over the phone, since he wasn't able to access it! I guess these days, everyone's expected to be on the bleeding edge of technology...) BTW, I saw the Aimee Mann/Michael Penn "Acoustic Cabaret" show a couple of nights ago and it was *fantastic*. I almost didn't go, since I've seen Aimee several times before and it was pretty expensive, but a friend who's a big Aimee fan and had never seen her live was going to be in town that day, so I bought tix for us. I'm so glad I did! This is an incredibly fun evening. I'd read that a comedian did their between-song patter, which sounded like a dubious concept, but I actually found the comedian, Patton Oswald, absolutely hilarious. YMMV, of course. :) Lots of tour dates left - -- check http://www.acousticvaudeville.com/ to see if they'll be playing at a venue near you... - --Sue Trowbridge * albany, california trow@slip.net * http://www.interbridge.com np: Adam Symons & the Wrong Party ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 14:43:43 -0500 From: "Mattoon, Melanie" Subject: RE: Weird voices Hello everyone! Hope you're all doing well today. I'm excited to be a new member of the list because I am a huge music fan and don't get much opportunity to talk about it with the well-versed (I work in the finance business, blech!). I live in Dallas and am looking forward to next year when I will most definitely be leaving finance and Dallas to make a new start in Austin. I thought this was a good topic to send my first post about. >Time to start a new thread..Which singers do you think >have the weirdest voices you have heard? I dont mean >this in a bad way. I mean as in "how on earth do they >do that?". I think Jeff Buckley and Liz Fraser top the picks of "how on earth do they do that?". They did/do things with their voices that I never imagined were possible. I would have to say that the word "weird" brings to mind two vocalists who can produce odd, sometimes annoying sounds: Victoria Williams and Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 May 2000 16:58:00 -0400 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Re: Weird voices Good Evening, Anna Maria: > Time to start a new thread..Which singers do you think > have the weirdest voices you have heard? I want to say Klaus Nomi. Out of curiosity, I picked up an import 45 with his multitracked cover of (yes) "Ding, Dong, the Witch is Dead" (amusingly recalled, now that the book _The Wonderful Wizard of Oz_ is one hundred years old), and a Purcell aria (from _Dido & Aeneas_, I believe) on the flip side. I didn't hear the whole album from which those tracks came (_Simple Man_), but what I did hear was quite amusing. The Purcell on Side 2 was a huge surprise. Oh, and from Joanna's response to a counter-tenor moment.... > Which reminds me of the bargain-counter tenor in P.D.Q. Bach's "Iphegenia > in Brooklyn"! :-P That would be John Ferrante, who was on many of Peter Schickele's PDQ Bach albums for Vanguard. "Iphegenia in Brooklyn" is funny enough (especially the last two movements together), but my fave PDQ pieces would have to include "Hansel & Gretel & Ted & Alice" (from the _Intimate PDQ Bach_ set). Welk Music re-released the Vanguard CDs a while back, and even did a box set with the first few albums... gotta save some money for those upgrades.... Several months ago a friend that sends me boxes of new/promo cds occasionally sent me a promo copy of Leona's album... I liked her name and stuck the cd in my bag for a long busride on the way to a gig in Boston... I was immediately struck with the first track, "Lazy Days" and very impressed with the whole cd. She's got a really beautiful voice and some cool songs, interesting lyrics... Some very pop songs (like the single, "Charm Attack"--which I've been hearing everywhere lately), some mellow stuff.. Some personal favorites which you might be able to find mp3s online or on napster -- "Earthquake," "Lazy Days," "Charm Attack," "New York Baby" (also a really beautiful hidden version of this song), "Northern Star"... Anyway, I'd definitely recommend this album. The only thing negative I would say is that the album is a bit inconsistant... And that it took awhile to grow on me... But there are some amazing songs.... Jessica www.jessicaweiser.com | www.aftersilence.net ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #139 **************************
