Agreed...  Tonight I gave my first listen to Songs of Angels by JR, one of
the Persephone's Circle women that Neile has mentioned a number of times.
By the second listen it had started to grow on me, though I'm still trying
to get a handle on the disc.  One of my first impressions though, was that
it sounded kind of like Toni CHilds.  (Well, that and a touch of Marianne

Hi..

Have got Michelle Young's Song of the Siren(thanks
Bill!). Oh my..Fantastic songs, amazing vocals. Only
problem is she sounds exactly like Kate..But she has
an ability to write songs that are so great that it
doesn't matter. And I dont think the world has enough
Kate songs as it is. These are complex,quirky
Dreaming-era songs. And to be fair she does a bluesy
number that is not at all like Kate..and on the
bonustrack she does a mean Laurie Anderson
impersonation. 
I am totally in love.

I found this a rather odd description; I've heard =Tempest= and I had
thought that Collaborateur was best described as "Goth." Certainly they
sound enough like the two Switchbland Symphony albums I own. Collaborateur
was part of the Goth scene in St. Louis, playing on the same bills as
Kristeen Young (who may not be Goth, but is certainly popular in that
scene: she has often played "Goth nights" and "Goth clubs" in New
York); in fact Kristeen Young sang backup on a Collaborateur song
"Basilisk" included on a St. Louis-area compilation CD. Does the other
Larissa Dalle stuff sound similar to =Tempest=?

This is the work of Lora (Laura) MacFarlane from Australia, right? She was
Sleater-Kinney's original drummer (first two CDs). She's an orchestral
percussionist (as well as drummer and guitarist), hence the 'phones. I saw
her do a solo show in NYC in 1996, and at the show bought two CDs from
her, one a collection of EPs of various projects under the title =Jelly
CD= (Woozy D001, no date I can find but material recorded '93-'95), the
other under the band name Ninety-Nine. It appears to be eponymous (or
titled =99=). Dated 1996, on Endear Records (ring 000). B&W cover,
birthday cake with "99" candles, a little car on the back. Mostly electric
guitar in the style of "Lora's Song" from Sleater-Kinney's eponymous
debut. If the one you have is different, I want ordering info; I was just
wondering the other day what MacFarlane has been up to since '96.

what's even worse is when you go out and actually BUY a cd that you ALREADY
HAVE! (admittedly i've only done this twice before, once with a beethoven
symphony that was re-packaged with different artwork, the other time with a
blur cd-single....)

I calls 'em as I sees 'em.  As a box to put music in, I've never quite
understood where "Goth" begins and ends, so it's not a term I use often,
and usually only when I see something as Gothic in the literary sense.  She
could be described as moody--does that mean she's Goth?  I dunno.  I think
of "Goth" in music as having a more overwrought sound.  Anyway, the sound
throughout the three discs is somewhat similar.  I need to listen more, of
course.

That's her--Laura this time.  This album is called _767_ and there's a
colour drawing of an airplane on the front.  This is from Endearing Records
ndr 011.  You can order it from our very own Scott Zimmerman's Twee Kitten
at http://www.tweekitten.com, at least that's where I got my copy.
Recommended.  I didn't know the Sleater-Kinney connection, but then I never
do.  I don't have their pre-_The Hot Rocks_ albums as I prefer their
current sound.  Love this ninetynine, though!
