Fiona Apple's Actually Velvet Belly is a shark living very deep down into the oceans. It got a very beautiful belly colour lighting up in the water - that's where the band got the name. The last news is that the live album is postponed. The band asked for it because they is entering the studio to make a new album and doesn't want to go out promoting another album at this point. - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 May 2000 01:14:01 -0700 From: jonty Subject: Re: Australian Artists now speaking of australian artists.. did anyone ever listen to much Falling Joys, i had an old tape once of aerial, and when i went to buy it, it was out of print. Some time ago I ended up reading an Aussie version of Carey's short stories, called "War Crimes". I'm not a short story fan, but these were stunning, the kind of stories that, after each one, make you sit back and go "Whoah!". When "Bliss" was published, I siezed it eagerly, but it didn't thrill me in the same way (thought it was kind of Vonnegut-ish). I've read a couple of his others, but still think his short stories were the best. Speaking of reading, this is something I've meant to ask: is there such thing as an ecto book list? While my listening habits embrace a large number of female singer-songwriters, my reading habits are largely male. About the only woman I read regularly is Ann Tyler, whose work I really like. Any suggestions? I'd just be interested to see what you all have to say. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 May 2000 15:40:52 -0700 From: "Bill" Subject: Re: Peter Carey and ecto reading. I don't know about an ecto book list, but once upon a time I did a compilation of the top literary choices (prose as well as poetry) of the people of #30plus (my favorite IRC channel, on EFnet). From this list I have "discovered" quite a few works and authors which I now enjoy reading. The #30plus Literary Page can be found at: http://www.wagill.com/30plus/ If we ever do such a thing here on ecto, I'd be happy to compile and post a similar list. - - Bill G. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 May 2000 19:32:00 EDT From: ArtfulMdrr@aol.com Subject: Re: Peter Carey and ecto reading. I like short stories, but it's rare I find anyone that can string a whole book of them together like that so compellingly. I recently bought Nathan Englender's book of short stories "For the Relief of Unbearable Urges". I had read two in advance, and they showed that sort of promise. Haven't read any more though. >Speaking of reading, this is something I've meant to ask: is there such >thing as an ecto book list? This was kind of funny, cause just yesterday I was talking to Jeff Hanson about the idea of an ecto book club. We are currently in an on-line book group that is kind of floundering, and I'd been torn between trying to drag in more people or just bailing out. Then I thought, well, there are a ton of readers on ecto, and it could be a pretty interesting and varied experience. And there is probably already a large built in group (subgroup) that would participate. So, what do people think? I'd propose it as a seperate list, maybe hosted on smoe if JeffW is amenable. I'm not too interested in mapping out a whole plan until I see that there is interest, but I doubt it would be too hard to organize. Figuring out how to select a book would probably be the toughest part. It's just a matter of what your audio CD authoring software wants. On Macs, they tend to want AIFF. On Windows they ususally want WAV. sean - -- Sean Harding sharding@dogcow.org | "I can sit there and do nothing as good http://www.dogcow.org/sean/ | as anyone." | --Margaret, 'Clockwatchers' ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 May 2000 21:53:00 -0700 From: Ricardo Subject: Alisha's Attic Have there been any new recordings by this woman group that had an impressive first album? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 May 2000 22:38:54 -0700 From: "Bill" Subject: Re: Ecto book group? So it wasn't as much of a "book club", but more of a top-ten list. While this didn't allow for digging very deeply into a particular book, it did allow for compiling a significant list of books worthy looking into. - - Bill G. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #123 **************************
