Mystery solved! Dan seems to have the answer, it appears to be the Aureate program he mentioned. I had been cleaning old files off my drive and come across this folder in my windows directory called 'amc' with the ads in it. All the ads were from the same website, so I assumed it was them that put it there.. and when I renamed the folder and visited their site again, a new copy of 'amc' appeared. I checked out this Aureate thing, and sure enough, there was an advert.dll in my windows/system folder, I renamed that and gave the site another try... looks like that stopped it. Seeing as it was one of the big online music sales sites that I thought was the culprit, and knowing there're a few people on the list who keep up on this sort of thing I figured it was worth inquiring about it here. Yeay, another fan of Paradise Motel! Great. Though I must admit I haven't heard much of them since they relocated to the UK... Have you heard about The Dear Hunters? it's the current project of ex-cloud Jodie Phillis (and other experienced and accomplished musicians) but it's rather different in style, much more mellow. I'd describe it as country tinged inner-city pop... think Love Me, Flicker, or perhaps slightly more mainstream Tarnation. Or if you'd like something more along the lines of Clouds, you could try Skulker (recently discovered by JJJ, duh!) or for something much more obscure, Twelve24... And, ahem, sorry for the shameless self-promotion but my own website though slightly neglected at the moment might also provide you with some suggestions. At the moment I'm still under the spell of Wendy Rule whom I saw this Friday. She visits us only rarely so it was a bit of a special occasion for me, and she didn't disappoint - she was brilliant! Wendy has been mentioned here a few times but I repeat again she's worth of Ecto's attention; her powerful voice and stage presence make her a compelling performer. BTW she just put a number of songs on mp3.com, a couple of them mastered by none other than ex-ectophile Anthony Horan... - ------------------------------------------------------ "If we took a random sampling of observers of the same sunset, chances are a few would think the sun got larger, a few would insist it stayed the same size, and an appallingly large number would have been looking in the wrong direction." -- Dr. Science - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 May 2000 22:12:17 +1000 From: Andrew Fries Subject: Re: privacy question On Sun, 30 Apr 2000, dave wrote: >Suppose you found after visiting a commercial website that it had >created a directory on your hard drive and put a bunch of banner ads in >it, (probably so they can flash them in your face faster), without your >permission or knowledge, and you could find no warning or mention of >anything of this sort in the sites privacy and legal statements. THANKS, ecto! - --Sue Trowbridge * albany, california trow@slip.net * http://www.interbridge.com np: Apples in Stereo, The Discovery of a World Inside the Moone ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 May 2000 22:24:54 +0100 From: "Adam Kimmel" Subject: three stock reactions to three ecto cd's. I don't know about anyone else, but I seem to have three main reactions on listening to a new album: There is the album that I want to instantly hear again; there is the album that I know deserves repeated listening to give it a chance to grow; there is the album I have to force myself to listen to the end (this last was easier in the days of vinyl, when the natural break of the first side often left a lot of albums only half heard). This weekend, on another trawl through my fave music spots of Soho, I came up with three pieces of prime ecto that fit into all three slots: Velvet Belly's "Lucia", Fiona Apple's "When the Pawn..." and Noa's eponymous album. I realise I may be a little late coming to these, but ---hey, I'm learning. Velvet Belly will leave me indebted to the ecto group for introducing me to such a sublime album -- how can such a badly named group turn out such lovely tunes? I am SO sorry that I missed their gig in London. Please keep me informed! This, naturally, falls into the first catalogue. Fiona Apple's cd falls into the second. I know she'd essential ecto, but I've never heard anything of hers that has instantly caught my attention (as opposed to my intros to Tori and the Indigo Girls, say), but this cd was going cheap, so I thought I'd give it a go. It's fine, just not exciting for me, but it's one I'll be listening to again and again to see what happens. This leaves the Noa cd. Bleaugh. This bland slab of MOR Radio 2 sub-Striesand, tonight-at-the-Palladium balladeering left me cringing with embarassment at its cheesiness, which is a pity as I kind of like "Calling". I forced myself to listen to it all the way through twice, but am in no hurry to repeat the experience. There's too much good music out there to bother..... Speaking of which: For any Peter Hammill fans out there, he has a new album out in a couple of weeks on Fie! called "None of the Above". Ahh, Spring is here. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 May 2000 16:50:35 -0700 From: "Drew Harrington" Subject: Velvet Janes Gossip > Subject: Re: lurking in australia ... > Have you heard The Velvet Janes? All I've read from Carey before was his book of short stories, which I thought was marvelous. I've seen the movie Bliss a couple of times, and it's one of my favorites, but I have never read the book. neal np: Veda Hille at Cleo House, Trinity College ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 May 2000 00:58:53 EDT From: NNadelS@aol.com Subject: Fwd: RAINN Day - --part1_9a.43921f9.263fba8d_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit - --part1_9a.43921f9.263fba8d_boundary Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Return-path: From: PepperMcGowan@aol.com Full-name: PepperMcGowan Message-ID: Date: Mon, 1 May 2000 11:29:39 EDT Subject: RAINN Day To: PepperMcGowan@aol.com, pepperlist@onelist.com CC: UhYeSwirl@aol.com, TypeOTori@aol.com, toris_faeries@hotmail.com, ToriPyro@aol.com, Toriluvr@aol.com, toriieeeluv@hotmail.com, ToriCure@aol.com, tori_fan_18@yahoo.com, tori_er00@yahoo.com, tori_angelical@hotmail.com, TKochie@aol.com, tirgatao@mindspring.com, tinkerbell914@hotmail.com, thoughtsritenow@hotmail.com, thislittlemasochist@hotbot.com, theblackfaerie17@yahoo.com, thebananaking@geocities.com, The40thDrink@aol.com, talula@indy.net, talula929@yahoo.com, superbitch@rocketmail.com, SullenLad@aol.com, Stargazerlily27@aol.com, srernestine69@hotmail.com, squeeze@squeeze.demon.nl (agent double poo), springhaze@torichat.com, sparkfaerie@yahoo.com (spark faerie), spark87@yahoo.com, spark_swirl_hotel@hotmail.com, sjdodd80@hotmail.com, Siobhan79@aol.com, Shiseido37@aol.com, RocketsTail@aol.com, Ripedreamplum@aol.com, righteousbabe17@hotmail.com, RedCorsett@aol.com, raven_unseen@hotmail.com, ratgod@gwis.com, RaspberrySwirl@wxs.nl, RaspberryShrrl@aol.com, raisengurrl@hotmail.com, RainnFaeri@stny.rr.com, pyxe@hotmail.com, qmabmay@yahoo.com, PYsChOdOuGhBoY@aol.com, porcelina6@yahoo.com, peterock@ix.netcom.com, persygrrrl@yahoo.com, pelerose@hotmail.com, Peleq55834@aol.com, Paul.Senick@grc.nasa.gov, Patkochie@aol.com, pandora@bitchgoddess.com, orangeworms@hotmail.com, OnTheBound@aol.com, Nymph32783@aol.com, NNadelS@aol.com, NINEinchNAILSgrl@aol.com, MmeStatira@aol.com, meth@smoe.org, Mermaidblue@aol.com, Meganatrix@socal.rr.com, louise42_uk@yahoo.co.uk, LostTearsIV@aol.com, littlemoonbeam@hotmail.com (glitter goth), LitleErthquake@aol.com, Lily.Matini@oberlin.edu, kristinplater@yahoo.com, keither@iname.com, kayne@simplyfabulous.com (josh kayne), Kaatji@aol.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="part2_9a.43921f9.263efce3_boundary" X-Mailer: AOL 5.0 for Windows sub 104 - --part2_9a.43921f9.263efce3_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I loathe forwards, I really do. It's not about seeing a Tori Amos video on MTV (because it's pretty unlikely that will happen)...It's about getting a message across and letting more people become aware of RAINN, which has helped thousands of people. So yes, I am actually going to ask you to forward this to everyone you think would be interested. Oh, and to everyone I sent this to that I don't know....sorry. Before you finish reading this, another woman will be raped. According to the Department of Justice, every 2 minutes a woman is raped. Teens 16 to 19 are 3 1/2 times more likely to be a victim of rape, attempted rape or sexual assualt. Unfortunately, most of these victims are alone. But they don't have to be. On July 27, 1994, the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) hotline began taking calls. RAINN provides free and confidential couseling, support, and advice to victims of all types of sexual crimes. Its nation-wide 1-800 number (1-800-656-HOPE) provides callers with a connection to a rape center in this or her area where s/he can receive support and referrals, and they call will never appear on their callers phone bill. RAINN was started by musician Tori Amos, herself a survivor of rape, as a way to unlock the silence. in May 1997, Congress declared May 16 the first annual RAINN Day. In honor of this year's RAINN Day, an e-mail campaign has begun to request MTV's show Total Request Live (TRL) play Tori Amos's video "Silent All These Years," a song about her own experiences with rape, and ask that MTV play a RAINN Public Service Announcement immediately after. On the first RAINN day, 1000 radio stations, MTV, VH1, and The Box simulcasted PSA's, and the result was a huge increase in calls to the RAINN hotline...hopefully, we can duplicate that success! So on Tuesday, May 16, go to the MTV TRL website (www.mtv.com/mtv/tubescan/trl99_new/playmy/playmy.tin?sPollName=playmysong) and vote for Tori Amos's "Silent All These Years" video and ask that they play a RAINN public service announcement immediately afterwards. Please send this e-mail to your friends, parents, brothers, sisters, and anyone else who wants to help unlock the silence.
