If, as someone mentioned, this isn't just a case of cookies or your browser cache filling up with ad graphics, I think the best course of action is to not visit the site again and to send them email telling them just *why* you're not coming back. Then of course you could spread the word about them so other people could avoid them too... btw, would you mind saying which site this is? I'd find that very annoying to say the least; if it happened to me, I'd consider it trespassing on my computer. Cookies are one thing (and not necessarily a nice thing all the time), but creating a directory on your hard drive without your permission goes beyond what's normally accepted. I would write to the company and tell them that I considered their action to be trespassing. I'd also contact the media: Perhaps Wired Magazine or the technology reporter for USA Today. Publicity can sometimes help curtail this kind of activity. - --Bill At 05:10 PM 4/30/00 -0400, you wrote: >I'd like to get some thoughts on something.. kind of an opinion poll.. >it might seem a bit off topic, but it does have some pertinence to this >group. > >Suppose you found after visiting a commercial website that it had >created a directory on your hard drive and put a bunch of banner ads in >it, (probably so they can flash them in your face faster), without your >permission or knowledge, and you could find no warning or mention of >anything of this sort in the sites privacy and legal statements. > >How would you feel about this, and what would you do, write to them, >stop visiting the site, just accept it or what? > >thanx >+-----------------------------------------------+ >+ dave + >+ Sideshow Bob's House of Wax and Waffles + >+ Female vocalists, Christian, and Polish music + >+ http://www.magpage.com/~sspan/ + >+-----------------------------------------------+ >+ irc.dal.net #tori #ecto + >+-----------------------------------------------+ Bill Adler Adler & Robin Books www.adlerbooks.com/celticmusic.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 May 2000 00:20:56 -0700 From: jonty Subject: lurking in australia hello ecto list i have not posted before but decided to now hello everyone, my name is jonathan i enjoy most of the music talked about on the ecto list as well as a lot of australian music.. paradise motel, falling joys, clouds etc etc.. has anyone got any other suggestions for australian music? any other australians out there?? jon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Apr 2000 20:15:10 -0400 From: Bill Adler Subject: Re: lurking in australia Jon, Welcome! Have you heard The Velvet Janes? They're a female duo, pop with a dash of eclectic rock overtones. I own two of their CDs: Opus No. 3 and Venus Calling -- both are great. It's hard to compare the Velvet Janes to any other group; their lyrics are creative and often clever, and the music is the kind you can listen to over and over again. The Velvet Janes have a third CD, Live at the Velvet Lounge, which I don't have, but which I'm going to order as soon as I've finished this message. I've done a lot of trading with people in Australia, mostly Andrew, and have a number of people I like a lot from down there. My Friend the Chocolate Cake is one of my faves, but I'm also fond of Margot Smith, Kerry Simpson, the go-betweens (and various offshoots), Mae Moore, Nick Cave, the waifs, Jeff Lang, suvome, Wendy Rule, Pavo Cristatus, and Swirl. Yes, nice job as always Glenn. I think this is the first time I have actually owned all the albums in a column when the column came out :) As an amusing side note, Neile bought 2 of them for me. I don't know what comes with the version of Book of Hate sold by Harmony Ridge. My version had an address to write to for a lyrics booklet, which I did. Kathleen has proven to be pretty responsive to written communications over the years, so you might just direct your questions about Philip straight to her. I haven't tried her on e-mail, but given that she always answered my postcards, I'd think that would work. (voiceoftheturtle@usa.net) My copy of Little Misery Birds looks pretty different than the one described in twas. It might still win awards for the worst packaging, but it does fit in with my cd's. It's a handmade sleeve that's only a little larger than a cd case. There are no lyrics or info though, except for the song listing and times on the back. (I ordered it when it came out, so I guess it's changed since then.) It was originally released as a cassette with a cool picture of a bug on the front and "les petits oiseaux de misere" on the spine. It had full credits and lyrics, which made it seem worth having when I later bought the cd and found it missing all of that. It also has two additional songs, both in french. ("Louis Riel's Letter" and "Adieu de la Mariee a ses Parents") There is an older tape called "Dead Branches Make a Noise" that does not appear to be for sale anymore. Also some written projects. If you are on her mailing list, you had the dubious honor of getting an 8 meg mailing of a new song (or new mix of a song). NOt sure, since I killed the download (she said it took her 38 minutes to upload it, which made it seem very questionable to mail it to people unbidden) and forwarded it to work straight off my internet server. According to her web site ( http://www.angelfire.com/music/kathleenyearwood ), she premiered a piece called "Job Curses the Day of His Birth" recently in Canada, opening for Diamanda Galas! Also, it appears that Harmony Ridge is her primary on-line resource, though you can by more of her stuff through her via the mail. neal np: a ma zone - zap mama ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 May 2000 01:22:10 -0400 From: DanStark Subject: Re: privacy question At 05:10 PM 4/30/2000 , dave wrote: >Suppose you found after visiting a commercial website that it had >created a directory on your hard drive and put a bunch of banner ads in >it, (probably so they can flash them in your face faster), without your >permission or knowledge... There's a notorious program called Aureate that gets bundled with a number of shareware applications - a real privacy violator that sounds something like what you're referring to. You can go here to see if it exists on your system, and get instructions on how to remove it: http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/AureateCheck.asp You might also consider installing ZoneAlarm, which is a terrific piece of freeware that can help keep this stuff from happening behind your back. I have found it to be very non-intrusive...it usually only pops up warnings when there is a good reason for them, otherwise it doesn't seem to slow things down: http://www.zonealarm.com Dan ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #121 **************************
