Boy, you have been out of it, haven't you? :-) Good ol' Mr. Information, Jeffrey, re- plied with the goods, including the following: > "Organic Acid" was one of the so-called > "Cathy Demos." Originally > released on bootleg 45s, [...] "Organic > Acid," however, did not appear on either of > [the CDs] and is rather rare. I've got it > on tape somewhere around here, but never > had it on CD. "Organic Acid" is on Volume 5 (of 5) of the Cathy Demos EPs. In my KT KollecTing daze, I actually managed to get two copies of Vol. 5, nos. 298 and 312 of 600 (and NO, it's not for sale at ANY price, so don't even try :). > don't suppose you'd share where you found > these, would you? > > jeff Well, I don't know where Damon came across these Kate songs, but I do know that you can find them periodically on Napster. I've been playing with Napster for the last 4 months or so, but just got back into downloading songs in the last 2 weeks. Depending on when you do a search on Kate Bush, you'll get any number of hits. After reading Damon's email, I tried it again, and what showed up but "Sexual Healing" and "Mna Na Heireann" (sp?). So I downloaded the latter, then decided to re- connect to see if my download time would im- prove. Well, the second time, "Sexual Healing" didn't show up as a selection, so I missed it this time. I suggest that, unless you have a big problem with Napster, you try periodically to search on Kate. In the last week, I've down- loaded some Kate songs, including "Brazil," her and Peter Gabriel's collaboration "Another Day," and her greatest song ever, "Love and Anger." Of course I have _The Sensual World_ but it's nice to have it a double-click away whenever I want to listen to it and can't locate the CD. Also, some I had never heard until then, a dif- ferent and GREAT demo of "Passing through Air," the "new" Cathy Demo (as of a year or so ago) "Atlantis," which is a wonderful song even tho' she sings it so high I can't make a word out! (I had missed out on the tape trading that oc- curred at Katemastime a year or two ago of the new batch of demos, and really hadn't made an effort of contacting IED or Karen or anyone ask- ing for a copy, so hearing "Atlantis" finally was a special thing for me). But the song that I found that has COMPLETELY and UTTERLY blown me away is her collaboration with Nick Cave of Nick's(??) song "Where the Wild Roses Grow." This song is now etched in my brain, and I can't wait to find it on CD somewhere. Anyone know how long this has been out, and on which album? I'd guess it's got to be one of Nick's CDs or singles. The song, in case you haven't yet heard it, is a tragic tale of innocence lost, and naivete (on the part of the female). It's an utterly compelling and haunting song about the murder of a lover. Kate and Nick do the song lyrics great justice. You must hear this if you have not yet and are a Katefan. Any information on this song would be very much appreciated. Not even my old buddy Sean Twomey's excellent site at http://www.clubi.ie/twomey/katebush.htm lists the song. I haven't checked Gaffaweb recently, and personally, I've been off Love-Hounds for I can't remember how long, but plan to rejoin once she finally puts out her next album. I've seen the song listed in Napster for days now, so I think you'd have a decent chance of finding it to download and hear it. Well, the short answer wasn't enough to convince me (though it turns out to have been dead on), but the long answer, including prior involvement with the Shams (I seem to have missed run on and fishe and roses), and Bob Kollmeyer's pointing out to me that she covers Mary Margaret O'Hara on one album, were enough. But first, my luck continued as usual as I scored 4th row center tix for ani difranco at less than face value. It seems to me that ani is at the place in her career that tori was several years ago. Her fans worship her so much that they actually make the concert a somewhat unpleasant experience. The only times I felt like I needed earplugs was during the between song shrieking. In fact, at one point, ani stopped a song and said that she does her best to fully put herself inside every song, to make it as meaningful and powerful as possible, and it's really hard to do that when she hear's her vocals echoed back to her by an audience full of people singing along. Course, this only disuaded people for about half a song. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed the show, as usual. I'm not very familiar with UP^6 and To The Teeth, so a lot of the songs were unfamiliar to me. I suspect Meth would be decidedly unenthusiastic about the constant use of the 2-horn backing section. I actually like the horns on Little Plastic Castle, but most of the times I found these kind of offputting. And I still miss Andy Stochansky (especially on the boring drum solo). But enough griping. Ani has such a stellar stage presence. The crowd went insane when she just walked out onto the stage, backlit by a bank of lights, and stood there waiting for things to quiet down. And I actually thought a lot of the highlights came when she played in a more stripped down format, like the mostly solo gun indictment song (with some standup bass at the end), of the stunningly beautiful duet with accordianist Julie on a song called? "I Am Not Angry Any More". And I think I could listen to an entire album that consisted of nothing more than The Diner/Hat-Shaped Hat (sorry, I'm really crummy with song names). Local story of the show - ani and band do something they never do, get up at the crack of dawn to go for a balloon ride. She loved the experience, which was a mixture of beautiful and ominous, as they floated around enjoying the scenery and terrifying dogs, cats and bunnies as the went over them. >long answer: > >are you already aware that garner & brown were the core of run on? run on >seemed to me to owe a pretty hefty debt to _may i sing with me_/_painful_ >era yo la tengo (like that's a complaint!). Yup, their set was easily as exciting as ani's, in entirely different ways. I was glad I went, since my presence put the audience into the double digits. I should no longer be surprised to find my friend Steve at these shows. Last time I saw him was at the Lois show, when he told me she was an old friend at that he played guitar on Strumpet. This time, he told me Sue was an old friend, and the show came about cause they were stopping over at his house on the way home. He joined them on toy piano and marimba on a few songs. Anyway, the experimental nature of their work was in full swing tonight. On one song, Sue played her guitar with a paintbrush. On another, she tied a rubberband around the strings, kind of like a capo, but then played above the rubberband. They had a lot of electronic gear, so that they could start rhythms and noises which they played drums and various stringed instruments over, as well as singing. She's got a great voice, in that slow, languid vein. They introduced all kinds of crazy rhythms, and played interesting counterpoints to them. Afterwards, I spent about 10 minutes talking to her about MMOH, while I picked up copies of the new album and "to run more smoothly". She was all excited because Chick Flick (I think that's what the NY zine was called), asked her to interview MMOH in the near future. She also claimed that MMOH is just hanging out in Toronto, playing almost weekly gigs and painting. Is this really true? Are there regular MMOH shows going on up there and no one is mentioning them to us? Steve or someone, look into this! Well, I think I need to get ready for bed. It's way too late now. neal np: "That's So Amazing" - Michelle Shocked at the Birchmere ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 02:00:46 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Speaking of Kate, I'd been planning to ask... Ani's been at this point for years. I was looking forward to seeing her in concert, having just missed her on her last trek through Cincinnati -- I bought my first album of hers (on Ecto advice) just after she had gone. Anyways, after Dilate (still my favorite album of hers, minus "Amazing Grace") she came back through, and fleur and I went to see her. We left half-way through because of the audience. It was truly unpleasant.
