I had half-forgotten he wasn't an already dead Edwardian. So, sad. Are there any musical sides to his work? He did a backdrop for theatre (Dracula) but other than Jasper's passion there's nary a gramophone in his stories. Any bands who used his words for lyrics?! I can imagine a goth band being inspired to make melancholy from such dark lines as "It was the day after Tuesday and the day before Wednesday. Embley and Yewbert were hitting one another with croquet mallets" or "Flappity flippity, Saragashum; Thip, thap, thoo." This is extremely sad... I love his work... damn. > Any bands who used his words for lyrics?! Well, not exactly, but Jill Tracy (yes, I'm plugging her YET AGAIN) writes music that is EXTREMELY Edward Gorey in its mood and lyrical content... look into her if you haven't already... www.jilltracy.com > np Mary Lydia Ryan's Diaphanous And this is an absolutely brilliant incredible album too, btw. Any bands who used his words for > lyrics?! http://www.fearofdolls.com/gorey4.html claims that a song on the The Freeze's 1999 "One False Move" was co-authored by Gorey; doesn't say which one, and it wasn't immediately obvious to me from the title list. http://www.fearofdolls.com/gorey.html has a Gorey bibliography, maintained by one of the principles of the band "Fear of Dolls" (which I had never heard of, but I guess I'll have to give 'em a listen if they like Gorey). http://www.goreyography.com/ has a more official bibliography, but I couldn't find any listing of recordings. - -dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 21:33:23 +0100 From: "Adam Kimmel" Subject: Aimee & Michael I just found out that Aimee Mann and Michael Penn are married! How cool is THAT? How long has this been going on? Somewhere around I'm With Stupid, I began to think there was a strange similarity between their styles (her use of Patrick Warren on tour probably helped this thought along the way) Apparantly, Aimee's doing a showcase gig in London some point soon. Anyone know about this? Will she be doing other gigs this side of the pond? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 15:40:18 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: that "Wendy" song At 11:55 PM -0400 4/16/00, dmw wrote: >On Sun, 16 Apr 2000 jjhanson@att.net wrote: > >> It's on Concrete Blonde's Bloodletting album. >> It's called "Tomorrow, Wendy". >> >> Andy Prieboy wrote it. > >i can't let an opportunity to hype one of my favorite off-beat records: >while you've almost certainly heard only concrete blonde's version, the >song also appears on andy prieboy's own _upon my wicked son_. As a bit of further info.... Andy Prieboy was in Wall of Voodoo. I think he actually took over the vocals for the band when Stan Ridgeway left. (Was it just one album that they did before breaking up?) It's actually something I have on vinyl, which means I move it with me wherever I go, but I never listen to it :) Anyway, they recorded that song too, maybe even before Concrete Blonde, though it's not the version anyone ever asked about. neal np: heart to heart - betty buckley and kenny werner (a side effect of my being out of town and not emptying Jeff's discs out of my CD player yet!
