This will be about someone who's name I heard for the first time here on ecto. And Klaus took me to a concert she gave, now a number of years ago: Noa :-) And, Claudia, you were right with your speculations about her new songs... But before I begin my review, two remarks about her recordings she made in the last year. Maybe Marion knows this. I think she's the one here who is really into this subject ;-) The (in Germany) well known Peter Maffay decided that he should do something in the direction "world music". So he invited a number of musicians from all over the world to make a record. One of them was... you guess it. I think they did a duet. After that, he has been touring with this record as well. And yes, she was with him on stage for a number of songs. Secondly, she sang a duet with Khaled on his last album. Heīs one of the best known rai musicians (this is what the CD bocklet says!). But they did a cover, to be precise. They chose a song which is difficult to cover, I think: Lennon's "Imagine"! And to be true, itīs not the best cover (I listened to it in a CD shop after I read about this). And now, finally her new album came out. This time there seems to be a bit more promotion for her, because I saw posters at several locations in Cologne and Bonn. But I havenīt heard anything about it in the radio. To change this, we went to see her on last Wednesday... The Location... ...here in Bonn in the "Brueckenforum", a nice little hall directly at the Kennedy Bridge, which, of course, crosses the Rhine. The Audience... Iīm not good at estimating a number of people. But all seats were occupied, so I think of a number of up to a thousand spectators (nearly sold out). The Stage... ...was prepared in the usual way. Only instruments, no decorations. Minimal light effects. The focus lays clearly on the music! The Sound and Acoustic... ...was pretty good. And it was a show where one didnīt need an ear protection. The Setlist... She opened with the title song form her new album, _blue towards blue_, and continued with new songs for almost 40 minutes. After "Manhattan - Tel Aviv", the only one she played from _Calling_, she left stage for the first time to change clothing. This time was easily filled when Gil Dor played a tune, accompanied by Zohar Fresco on percussion. Now, to me unknown songs alternated with tunes from her first and selftitled album: "I donīt know", "Child of Man", "Mishaela". The Encores... Two encores. Did I say that she played only one song from _Calling_? Here came the second one, which makes a perfect song to end a Noa show: "Savior" as a second encore, where she was accompanied by Gil. This song was requested several times during the show. For me, this one is a better ending than "Ave Maria". The show took almost two hours. The Musicians... ...were, of course, Gil Dor on Guitars (on Noaīs left side). Behind him, a young guy at the "Roland"s. On her right, a young woman on bass, and behind the bass, on drums, Zohar Fresco. More points to mention were... ...that she was as talkative as she used to be. So to the end of the show, she sang the "Thank youīs": Everyone got his own little tune and story. But not only that, she did an introduction or welcome to her show after the first song in this way as well. ...that she began the introduction of Gil Dor with an explanation of her name: N(ot o(nly a(chinoam :-) ...that theyīd been in Bonn a number of years ago. That time, theyīd been invited by the government. Their only problem was to get back to the US for a gig on the next day. But the government bought them a flight on a Concorde. So this is where the taxes went... ...that -did you know?- she wears eye lenses? She remembered her early school days. Character of the day was the now very important character `w'. But she couldnīt see what her teacher was doing on the blackboard. She had to wear glasses, but changed to lenses when she started her carreer. ...that in the row behind us there were a couple which saw Noa two years ago in Mainz (the "Zeltfestival" :-). They remembered, like we also did, that evening well especially because it was the evening when the german soccer team was beaten by Croatia at the world soccer championship... Noa told us that evening how happy she was to see us although there was that "important match". Well, after her show, we went through the old town of Mainz to catch our train back home, happy and in a good mood. On our way we saw two kinds of people. The first was more or less sad because the german team had lost, and the other party was very happy, because their team had won... My resumee... It was a nice show. Very nice. I like to see Gil Dor playing the guitar because of his miming. And he doesnīt need to pose in a way many guitar players do, you know. I was happy to see Zohar Fresco on stage, because heīs such a good percussionist. The first time I saw him, he played a cooking-pot as well... The whole gang on stage had fun, one could easily see this. But now comes an important "but": At the beginning of my report I stated that Claudia was right with her speculations about Noaīs new songs. (She told me that she heard Noaīs new stuff in the radio.) Her new ones donīt sound "special" like her old ones do. They sound more like that easy stuff one can hear in the radio all day long. With these songs she will be only one of many other femal singers. As la mia ragazza says it, she should leave this kind of music to singers like Celine Dion or Maria Carey (sp?). Here in Germany we tell this kind of songs "Weichspueler" - not bad, but nothing special in it. Perhaps they (her Management or so) think they could jump into this kind of music to have more success. But she will only be one of many. Her advantage is her uniqueness, her unique mix of pop, jazz and oriental elements. Letīs hope she will not develop further into this direction! Thanks for listening I remain... Or Schrock? I caught a brief glimpse of a brief article on her in Billboard magazine while leafing through it in HMV, looking for something else entirely. It sounds decidedly ecto, but couched in the usual jargon it was hard to say: Bluesy piano player, blah blah, soulful voice, blah blah, singer/songwriter of unusual strength and sensitivity, blah blah. It's a problem that current female singer/songwriters face, in that they are doomed to live by comparison and sounbites that don't actually tell you anything about them. Sometimes I think music critics have special keys on their keyboards that they can hit to deliver the descriptive cliches intact. Now, any female artist is faced with being bandied about the holy trinity of the Three Points of Reference: Tori, PJ, and (that bastard usurper) Alanis. If they get particularly daring and subtle, Ani, Kristen and Sara might make an appearance, but these are the yardsticks created to beat us with. Which creates difficulty to me in talking about someone I've stumbled upon entirely by accident, Naomi. Her press blurb manages to avoid mention of the Trinity, settling instead for comparisons to Janis Joplin and Beck. Hmmm. Not sure about the latter, apart from the use of some odd breakbeats, but the Joplin comparison is okay. She has a definite, bluesy growl that turns into something of a screech in the upper registers, and a gritty, confrontational style that I've found refreshing. Her album, Liquid, is definitely worth checking out for ecto fans who've ever wondered what Tori crossed with Alanis would sound like (okay, okay I DID IT!). She's not entirely free of cliche, but I think she has a lot to offer, and can only hope this does not join my "fly-by-night" collection of one-offs -- it is one of the more pleasant surprises from my bargain-bin trawls. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2000 01:41:15 -0500 From: joshw Subject: Martha and Sloan Just curious if anyone else caught Sloan Wainwright w/ Martha Schuyler Thompson the last few months? Or Schrock? It's Kate Schrock.. I know very little about her except that after several years in Chicago, she returned to her native Maine in 1998 and gave a concert at the First Parish Church in Portland last year (the company I worked for then printed the posters, which is how I first heard of her) in support of her most recent CD "Shunyata". I have her previous album "Refuge" and while she has a nice gospel-piano based style (the piano reminds me of some Peter Gabriel stuff), the nine songs on it become fairly monotonous after 3 or 4 tracks, mostly due (I think) to the production of the album rather than to her music, which definitely is ectoish in a bluesy kind of way. I read somewhere that "Shunyata" is a more diverse and better-produced effort with a more jazz-oriented feel, but I have yet to hear it; We're heading to Borders later today with a 20%-off card so maybe this is a sign for me to get it. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2000 16:06:29 EDT From: JudoEWF@aol.com Subject: that "Wendy" song Okay, I know you guys can answer this for me.
