Great..Just give me time to get into their other stuff. Still I like what I've heard..Roisin has a nice vocal style."Fun for me" is terrific. Okay as you know i've been going on a lot about Michelle Young..Could someone help me download her stuff from mp3.com and put it on a cdr? I could trade you something nice in return. Dont have any cdburner or anything so I cant do that myself. Will buy her records and support her anyway I promise but some of her best songs are only on mp3 as yet. You'd be making me very happy if you could help me with this. Anna Maria np-Primitives-Pure __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send online invitations with Yahoo! Europe Daylight Time) From: Marion Kippers Subject: Jennifer White -- Clarsach (Celtic harp) Hi, Another album I received to review for the Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music (some time ago already…) is the first cd by Jennifer White, a Canadian Celtic harper, singer, composer and storyteller. The cd is called "Clarsach" ("Celtic harp") and was released in 1998. Her music is mostly ambient, ethereal, instrumental harp with a few traditional tunes / songs. "Clarsach" is the Gaelic name for the Celtic harp, and that instrument is what this cd is all about. Jennifer White wrote most of the songs herself, with a few own arrangements for traditional songs. Most of the album is instrumental, harp only or harp accompanied by pennywhistle, doumbek, or guitar, with songs inspired by Celtic myths and stories. On a couple of tracks she does some vocalisations in the background (which are actually quite nice on "The Selkie's dream", with layered overdubs), but to be honest I'm not that impressed with her singing voice -- it seems unstable and not sure whether to go in the higher or lower register, making it sound as if it's somehow "not there". Fortunately there is only one track where she really sings ("Loch Lomond" which is the final track on the cd and thus easy to skip)... The rest of the cd is very pleasant, relaxing music, very nice to have playing in the background in the evening. Recommended. As for comparisons, while I like to listen to harp music I have to admit that I'm not that familiar with other Celtic harpists apart from Loreena McKennitt and the occassional harp song by bands like Clannad or Deanta. I quite like an album by Northern Lights (Steve Coulter & Harris Moore), "Music for harp and hammered dulcimer", which has the same relaxing quality as Jennifer White's music has, though Northern Lights play mostly traditional or classical songs while Jennifer mostly writes her own compositions. Other comparisons would be welcome! More information about Jennifer White and her album "Clarsach" (including sound samples) can be found on her official website, http://www.knockgrafton.com/ . According to that website a new album is due for release in 2000. The Maple Folk CD list at http://www.coastnet.com/~maplefolk/1998/9810whit.htm has a nice song by song explanation for Clarsach, written by Jennifer White herself. There are also two compilation albums that Jennifer White contributed to: Celtic Mystique: Women of Song (Tandem Music Group 1999, includes "Loch Lomond"), and Barrachash: Celtic Jewels (Sattva Music, Germany 1999, including "Oisin" and "Brighid's Dance"). All these songs are on "Clarsach" as well. As I said, recommended! Best wishes, Marion n.p. Jennifer White - Clarsach n.r.
