This band is soooooooo bizarre, Somebody on the ECTO mailing list mentioned them .That was me. Basically it is not dance, it is not hip and it will never make it commercially. It is apparently a band of Virginia fogies my age with a real hot looking Blond German Marlena Dietrich chick in front. The Lyrics are straight out of some German Fantasy Novel. They categorize themselves as "Cabaret Rock Nouveau", sort of a post Goth Lounge. I have listened to a few of their MP3s on the web, and I have found myself laughing out of control at the uncanny Marlena like vocals. I think the "Cabaret" part of their charter refers to the Musical "Cabaret" because the songs sort of remind me of songs that some of the Eurotrashy Characters from the musical would write if they were in a Styx like Rock Band. I haven't quite figured out for myself if this band is cool or totally un cool, and that is really fascinating to me, because when I listen to them I'm sort of like that ape man in front of the rectangular thingie in 2001. Ordinarily I know right away if I like a band or I don't. So in short you may see more clearly than I on this one if they totally suck or not. I do like the fact that there are real strings and woodwinds in the band, otherwise I could just write them off as Euro Trash Pat Benatar from Camelot, but something in the final mix says to me in a very thick German accent "I do not suck, you suck, you stupid American Record collector type who is not as familiar with Aryan Mythological Archetype inspired Lounge music as you should be, shut the fvxk up and have some mead ". Huzzah They move me. Perhaps you need to be european and love german cabaret music to understand. I do anyway. Give them a chance. Why, she even makes "Family Man" (Yes, all you Hall&Oates fans, that "Family Man") tolerable. Her voice is so sweet and pure... ethereal, even. Whenever I think of "little-known-but-talented" female vocalists, I think of Claire Torre... not a household word, but, I dare say all you Pink Floyd fans have her voice burnt into your memories... She is the vocalist on "The Great Gig in the Sky" off the the "Dark Side of the Moon" LP. I hope my entire day isn't this disjointed.... No that feeling. I actually called the club around 8, and got a message from the day before saying the show was cancelled. I was annoyed I didn't check earlier, cause there wasn't a chance to do much else. Sorry to have missed you Jeff. My folks were impressed at Iota's cancellation capabilities. They were toying with going to see what Melissa Ferrick was like. They have been to Iota once before, to not see Mary Jane Lammond, who never showed up that night. So they were curious if shows ever happened there. Wish I was in town for the Susan and Johnny show, but I'm leaving for Charlotte tomorrow (Tuesday). Hey, anyone out in ectoland live there? I won't be there long, but I'll be there Tuesday and Sunday nights. neal ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 11:48:38 -0400 (EDT) From: jburka@min.net Subject: Re: sigh On Mon, 10 Apr 2000, Neal Copperman wrote: > My folks were impressed at Iota's cancellation capabilities. I contemplated going to the Open Mic featuring Sarah Slean, but apparently she bailed. And of course last night Ferrick wasn't there (though the sign claimed that a new date would be announced). Their repertory includes newly composed musical works, performance poetry, chant from various early traditions, and group improvisations. Techniques include many extended uses of the voice as well as electro-acoustic sounds, and elements of humor and surprise. The performance will feature compositions that combine predetermined structures and group improvising in various ways, as well as totally spontaneous compositions featuring the whole ensemble. The program will include the world premiere of "Drought" (ensemble version) by Jonathan Matis -- a hybrid composition / improvisation that utilizes notated fragments that are combined and assembled spontaneously by the performers. Other works on the program will include the ensemble's signature "Gray Code" improvisation structure, which uses a mathematical algorithm to systematically move through all combinations of performers as smoothly as possible. Also featured will be the new "anti-gray" structure, which requires the performers to improvise in all combinations, while maximizing differentiation. Metatron Press is proud to announce the release of three recordings in a new series. CDs will be available at the performance, or directly from Metatron Press: * "(voices)" by Comma, the vocal trio featuring Gray Code members Tom Bickley, Matthew Ross Davis, and Joseph Zitt * "Even the Widest Aardvark Outdreams the Gnu" by Zitt/Matis featuring vocalist Joe Zitt and guitarist Jonathan Matis * A self-titled release by Gusty Winds May Exist, a shakuhachi/recorder duo featuring Nancy Beckman and Gray Code member Tom Bickley * "Animals: electronikazoomusique", a collection of electronic works and mixes by Gray Code member Matthew Ross Davis. * COMING SOON (May '00): "Death Slug 2000", guitar duos by Tyondai Braxton and Jonathan Matis For more information about the artists, please see: http://www.metatronpress.com/artists/graycode For information about MOCA-DC, see http://www.dc.net/vertical/MOCA.html or call 202-342-6230 For more information please contact Jonathan Matis j_matis@yahoo.com 202 296-5101 - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 21:49:31 -0400 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: what's this song? > Whenever I think of "little-known-but-talented" female vocalists, I think of > Claire Torre... not a household word, but, I dare say all you Pink Floyd > fans have her voice burnt into your memories... Oh, and it's Clare Torry. She also did a couple of songs on Roger Waters' _Radio KAOS_, which I think I actually prefer to her work on "Great Gig in the Sky." As far as I know at least Dwayne Keith should be there, nothing definite on the others yet. The chat will be on IRC (Internet Relay Chat), in the Dalnet #ecto channel. For those not familiar with IRC, you will need to download a chat client program. One is available for the PC at: http://www.mirc.com/ and for the MAC at: http://www.ircle.com/ Install whichever is right for your system and look through the directions for using it. You'll probably want to test it out before Monday night, to make sure you can get to the right channel and familiarize yourself with it. Both programs should have a selection of different servers you can connect to, you need to find one of the US Dalnet ones. In Mirc you can also usually just type /server irc.dal.net in the Status window, I'm not sure about Ircle though. Once on the server join the #ecto channel, in Mirc you can open the channel folder and enter ecto for channel to join, or type /join #ecto in the Status window, again I'm not sure how Ircle is setup, but it should be similar. The channel topic should be about the chat, if so you're in the right place.
