I don't wish to seem defensive or prolong this debate, but I'd really like to answer some of the comments that have been made about PC. 1) Yeah, I misunderstood the article, and the claim is against further claims on royalties. Apologies for that. In the meantime, though: 2) the musicians "will claim that withdrawl of the royalties would leave them destitute" states the article I read. But, who can believe what you read, right? 3) Actually, I always LIKED PC as a frontman, although I'd never seen Peter Gabriel lead the group. I always thought (and still think, believe it or not) that he had a good, versatile voice, and I hoped that he'd bring an atmosphere of down-to-earthiness and accessibility that would help the band weather the punk era. I had no idea that this would be at the expense of the band's crediblity and intelligence. 4)Being popular doesn't automatically make you good, and being commercially successful doesn't make you acceptable. Bananarama were the biggest selling female group of all time. The Sun is Britain's highest-selling paper. This is why discussion lists like this, and the artists under discussion, exist. 5)It was wrong of me to tar a man by his politics, but the paradox still exists of him singing about the homeless while implicitly supporting the policies that helped put them there, then declaring to the press his intention to leave Britain if Maggie lost, and then leaving it anyway, to live in tax exile. My original point (before I got personal, which was a mistake) was that he still stands as a tragic figure, someone who had so much to offer but then settled for the mediocre and the money. Note that _The Well_ is in yiddish, not hebrew, and if you were to pick stuff from that, you'd probably want to make sure it's not the tracks that deal with things like existential angst or losing one's entire family in a concentration camp. I'd recommend picking up her release _Crazy Flower_ which has some tracks that would be quite appropriate. It's sort of a greatest hits, has a few live tracks, and though it's quite uneven, is still a great album. Very easy to find around here (I think it was on Green Linnet). The lyrics are included in english (but not hebrew, which I find very annoying, though I imagine it'd make it easier to pick appropriate songs). One song very popular at weddings (well, generally very popular) is "Erev Shel Shoshanim ('evening of roses')." Very romantic imagery. There are lots of versions available. If you're looking to expand your Jane Siberry collection, there's the collection _Festival of Lights_ (with Jane performing "Shir Amami") has an instrumental version with an appalachian folky feel to it (lots of hammered dulcimer). jeff ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jan 1970 00:00:00 -0500 (EST) From: Jay Behel Subject: Re: Wedding Mix Ideas Request On Fri, 31 Mar 2000 13:45:13 -0500 (EST) jburka@min.net wrote: > > >On Fri 31 Mar 2000, Jay Behel wrote: > Note that _The Well_ is in yiddish, not hebrew, and if you were to pick stuff from that, you'd probably want to make sure it's not the tracks that deal with things like >existential angst or losing one's entire family in a concentration >camp.
