As I said, it's not very ecto, but the coincidence was too much to pass up: In today's paper there are two items: one a news item announcing that Phil Collins (estimated personal wealth: 320m pounds sterling) is suing two of his old mates and backing musicians from Earth Wind & Fire for $20,000, claiming they overpaid them over a period of six years and only just realised the mistake. The other was an article about Phil Collins titled: "This Man Must Be Stopped", followed by a lengthy, fairly predictable but fairly accurate diatribe against him. But remember folks, you heard it here first. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 07:06:29 -0600 From: "Amy" Subject: RE: Michelle Young and Spacey wins Hi I want to thank Anna Maria for mentioning Michelle Young. In the story I read[1], Collins' lawyer went out of his way to say that they were not asking for that money to be repaid: Howe stressed that no order was being sought for actual re-payment of the money. What was being sought was a declaration that the money had been paid by mistake. No record royalties had been paid to Davies and Satterfield for about four years and the bulk of the overpayments had already been recovered. All that was outstanding was roughly $20,000 each from Davies and Satterfield. ``The claimant is not seeking to make either of the defendants put their hands into their pockets and pay back a penny,'' Howe said. The full amount involved was $793,800, and I'd guess Collins' is suing for protection against any future claims on that sum, not trying to recover the $40,000. He made quite a point about not clinging to any particular belief system at the expense of others last night, repeatedly stating "We don't KNOW" which if any are correct, and emphasizing the wonder of the universe and Man's vital part in appreciating it. There was also a wonderful recounting of his meeting with John Huston and the writing of the screenplay for Moby Dick, which was worth the whole evening by itself... He very consciously tried to "become" Melville in order to get the essence of the story into the screenplay. His impersonation of Huston was hilarious. The only thing he really preached about that wasn't SF was his insistence that we should all start hassling the local news media to cover a more balanced proportion of "good" news, i.e., arts presentations, science and technology updates, etc. instead of the litany of lawsuits, accidents, wars, scandals. ad infinitum. The banter over PC's political and legal doings has hardly been compelling evidence that he is even misguided, let alone evil. I am willing to bet, for instance, that Phil was not the only person in the UK that supported Thatcher. I know some fine people that voted for Regan back then, not that they might have with hindsight. And Earth, Wind, and Fire are not exactly hurting for money you know. I still view Phil as a good hearted person in light of the fact that he helped PG out of a bind. Accrding to an interview with PG in the Rockumentary "Genesis" there were threats against his life and family because of the amount of money he owed out, and who he owed it to, after the first Womad failed. If Phil hadn't stepped in, the face of music in the 80's and 90's would have been markedly different, that was my point. Having said that I am still the first in line to say Phil sucks as a front man - ted dsr@mail.lns.cornell.edu wrote: > > In the story I read[1], Collins' lawyer went out of his way to say > that they were not asking for that money to be repaid: > > Howe stressed that no order was being sought for actual > re-payment of the money. Actually there was just a piece in EW where some music agent had written a book and blasted about a dz. clients - it was one of those little 'match the blurb with the celeb' thingies and the only good comment - that the nice guy front was genuine - was for Phil Collins. I know practically nothing about the guy (except that he's not to my listening taste) - just including this for what it's worth. Back when Lisa Gerrard's Mirror Pool CD was released, a reviewer bitchily (but accurately) characterized Gerrard as "if Kate Bush, instead of being a pixie, had been born as a suicidal nun." While I personally love the spiritual, mystical side of Gerrard's oeuvre, I can see how it can be a bit depressing for some people. Ekova's Deirdre Dubois gives Gerrard's trademark mouth-music style a dose of anti-depressants. An American-born French citizen, Dubois fashions her own language out of nonsense syllables, singing in a pastiche of mostly Eastern styles. The instrumentation includes Dubois' own guitar and cello-playing, an oud-player (Egytian harp-guitar) and a percussionist who gallops through Celtic, African and flamenco riffs with joyous abandon. To add to the melange, there's Indian-raga-like version of the Irish folk tune "In My Prime," covered so well by Rhea's Obsession. Dubois' voice is rich and deep, and has a nice chocolately tone that brings to mind Cesaria Evora. Imagine Yma Sumac, instead of singing longue-ethnic hybrids, attempted material closer in spirit to Vas or Lisa Gerrard, and you might come up with this fascinating CD. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #90 *************************
