With all this talk about the Oscars, I figured I'd put one more plug in for Chlotrudis Awards, my non-profit organization that honors, supports and educates about independent and non-mainstream film. Our Sixth Annual Chlotrudis Awards is coming up on April 8, and there's still a week left for any interested parties to vote! Visit our website at http://www.chlotrudis.org/, check out the list of nominees and place your vote using the electronic ballot. And if any of you are in the Cambridge, MA area on April 8, there are still a few tickets left for the event! It's going to be a great time, and we've got three terrific guest speakers lined up. Sean Gullette, screenwriter and actor from "Pi," Davidlee Willson, screenwriter and actor from the forthcoming film, "The Autumn Heart" starring Tyne Daly and Ally Sheedy, and Julia Elliott, screenwriter for the 1999 Tibetan film, "Windhorse." Thanks for letting me do some shameless plugging! Michael n.p. Cheryl Wheeler - Driving Home n.r. I heard about this two days ago and after reading a question on the list I thought I'd elaborate a little more. His death was not a surprise: he's been battling cancer of the liver since 1996, but continued to tour in order to raise money for a cancer fund. He's also released an album only a few years ago. My own recollections of Ian will always be connected to his endlessly funny songs "Spasticus Autisticus", "Reasons to be cheerful, part 3" and "Hit me with your rhythm stick". In school, I would always wonder at the hidden meanings of the latter, and use the lyrics at almost any given moment. It's a sad fact that as one gets older, one's heroes slowly start disappearing from the world. Thankfully he leaves behind his music. Kind regards, Marcel Rijs Koninklijke Bibliotheek afd. As part of a free lecture series, these two gentlemen took the stage one after the other and made quite an impression on the audience of mostly college-aged folks. Adams entered the auditorium to a huge round of applause, and briefly spoke about the amusing task of an author trying to talk about his craft, which is basically making up stories. He managed to convince us that after a while even the author isn't sure if he's telling truth or fiction when he answers questions... so instead of answering questions, he decided to read from his works. Most of the passages were from "So Long and Thanks For All The Fish"; anyone who hasn't heard Adams read his own works is missing an incredible experience. I was wiping tears of laughter from my face throughout, and I knew what to expect; I've seen Adams read at least 3-4 times. He wrapped with a classic scene from "Restaurant at the End of the Universe", the excellent Dish Of The Day sequence, and finally the scene where Marvin is left to fend off the Frogstar Death Robot. Utterly wonderful; Adams does Marvin better than anyone else. Bradbury took the stage immediately after, and though confined to a wheelchair due to his stroke last winter, he waved vigorously and acknowledged the spontaneous standing ovation. I do believe he spoke longer than Adams, and never missed a beat. He talked about his early days as a writer, relating many anecdotes about the composition of his classic works and his introduction into writing screenplays. A self-confessed SF preacher, Bradbury got really wound up talking about the challenge of space and the meaning of being a pioneer both in body and in mind. He brought the evening to an emotional conclusion talking about his walk across London during the Apollo 11 landing, stopping at various TV studios and adding his commentary to what he feels was the most important day in the history of the planet to date. At the conclusion of his moving speech, he was escorted off stage to another tumultuous standing ovation that almost refused to die down. That would have been it (I had no intention of standing in line for 3 hours to bother what would surely have been a worn-out Douglas Adams, and Bradbury was clearly unable to sign autographs), except that while wandering around looking for a friend I had seen coming in, I realized that there was a commotion around the stage exit. Ray Bradbury was being pushed from the exit to a wheelchair-accessible elevator, and presumably his ride home. I was in the right place for the few seconds he was in the aisle, and I tossed him a cheerful salute. "Thank you, Mr. Bradbury!" He smiled and returned the gesture, with a snappy "Thank you!!" There was no need to explain what we were thanking each other for; but I'm grateful that I got the chance. In a moment he was gone, and I figured that was the best way to end the evening. I'm glad I took the time to attend. - -- | Greg Dunn | this is slowly taking me apart. | | gregdunn@indy.net | grey would be the color if i | | The Sultan of Slack(tm) | had a heart. | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | Trent Reznor | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 23:24:19 -0500 From: DanStark Subject: Re: Sarah Slean Iota gig canceled (3/29/00) At 09:37 PM 3/29/2000 , Jeff Wasilko wrote: >I just found out (via Valerie) that Sarah's show at Iota tonite >is canceled.... It was fascinating and you had me transported there to the auditorium. I remember hearing that Bradbury had had a stroke..I hear that a possible remake of his classic Farenheit 451 may be an evantuality and the way remakes are going at the moment, I don't know whether to wish him a long enough life to see it or not..IMDB doesn't say anything about it so maybe it will be a long time coming. I will never forget one night when I was fifteen and my parents were out and I snuck down and turned on the TV and "Bradbury's Thriller Theater" was on the box, hosted by the man himself. That night's feature was "The Tiniest Assassin".....*shudder* From then on I had the deepest respect for such a compelling storyteller amanda 'I've lost my memory, but I mean to get it back!' - -Queen Mary, grandmother to Elizabeth II, when aged 85 _________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 14:28:57 +1000 From: "Heidi Maier" Subject: Deborah Conway Hello! I saw Bradbury speak a number of years ago, and I would much rather have been at your talk. Our talk (at Johns Hopkins University) he was very much the "SF preacher", with emphasis on the preaching part. He spent a good part of his talk going on about how religion, in schools and everywhere else, would dramatically help combat the evils in our society. I didn't go away from that lecture anywhere as thrilled as you were. neal np: A Quick One Out The Back (sampler tape, current track - Twelve Days of Christmas - Jane Siberry) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #89 *************************
