Soon I'll get it, but I'm one of those people who prefer live, anyway. Not only does Lori have GREAT stage presence and put on an incredible show every time, but she also has two WONDERFUL precussionists, Gloria and Carolyn, who studied drums in Africa for a while. I suspect it's the UK release of a US cd -- tracks include The Bird, Bad Head Day, Haunt Me & Wonderland, and it's very dreamy and full of electronica. I have this CD (at home, so I have to work from memory at the moment). It is Lida in her ectronica mode, of which she has a few albums (usually with Lida Husik / Beaumont Hannant). If you read the liner notes, you see it was all written and recorded in England, but I don't believe it's a UK release. (Ok, maybe yours is a UK release, but I don't think mine is). Actually, now that I think about it, Green Blue Fire is credited to Husikesque, isn't it? They have an entry in the guide (as wll as the work with BH), slated for the future. It's just not done yet. What functionality would you find really cool? In the past, the primary thing I have looked for in web sites is information, and I think the information I'd most like from a company-run artist site is up-to-date tour info (the up-to-date part is vital) and new material information (upcoming albums, singles, appearances on soundtracks and other artists' albums, stuff like that). Secondarily, I'd like interviews or information from the artist, particularly about their music, but other topics might be interesting too. The ability for fans to address questions to the artist that might conceivably be answered and available for perusal would be fun too. I'm slowly being dragged into the world of on-line music, so it seems like mp3's or something similar are necessary these days. As a fan and collector, I'd probably rather see weird unreleased songs (like b-sides) available on the site. (Course, I'd still rather have them on a disc at the moment.) Given that this is a Nettwork project, I would expect that the whole site be artfully done and lovely to look at. What I'd like on top of that though, is for the site to be easy to navigate without all the bells and whistles turned on. That is, I can get to all the data I want, with images turned off, java and javascript off, and without cookies. (And, if possible, no ads!) For me, it's the information that is important. If it is a piece of art as well, that's a bonus. However, when I want the info, and not the art, I like to be able to get at it. Looking forward to seeing the results, neal np; Soak - Mimi ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 20:26:03 -0500 From: meredith Subject: sarah harmer Hi! I hosted the trio of Sarah Slean, Sarah Harmer, and Leslie Feist at my house on Saturday night, and was tremendously impressed by Sarah Harmer's music. At times, I heard a strong similarity to some of the music on Kelly Willis' newest CD, as well. Of course, if you don't know who Kelly Willis is, that particular comparison is pretty useless. But it's the best comparison I can think of... there was a bit of an 'old school' country swing influence, to these ears. So, as Meredith said... go buy her CD. She was great live, and the CD is great, too. What functionality would you find really cool? I'm a big fan of samples (preferably complete songs) available for download. In the end there is no better way to experience music than to actually *hear* it, so that's one feature that can never be overdone in my book. What *can* be overdone is the design. I appreciate "cool" and "artistic" and "cutting edge" as much as the next guy, but not at the expense of functionality and clarity... and I'd like the designers to bear in mind that not everyone has broadband connection - which is meant to be an argument against overdone design, not against large mp3 samples! Actually I really appreciate sites providing low-bandwidth as well as the full-on versions, because I think it's a sensible compromise allowing both eye candy for those who want it, and quick access for others. The only catch is, both versions have to stay in sync. Having said that, I don't really care whether the site is accessible with Lynx; what I want is not so much compatibility stretched backwards to the browsers of 1st generation but rather spread across the current platforms. Remember you're producing your site for Internet, not Microsoft-net! You'd think it should go without saying... but sadly it still doesn't. - ------------------------------------------------------ "If we took a random sampling of observers of the same sunset, chances are a few would think the sun got larger, a few would insist it stayed the same size, and an appallingly large number would have been looking in the wrong direction." -- Dr. Science - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 20:34:55 -0800 (PST) From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: Re: What would you do? Another consideration that all web designers should keep in mind is the large population of disabled people who use the internet. There was a long, interesting article about it in yesterday's San Francisco Chronicle/Examiner business section. For visually disabled people who use specially designed software that "reads" web pages to them, it's important to use ALT tags and not rely solely on image maps. The sad thing is that today's increasingly flashier web sites are becoming less accessible to the disabled. The newspaper article said that a big complaint is that Webvan.com's site (they provide home delivery of groceries) is totally non-accessible -- and they offer a service that many disabled people would no doubt benefit from. Personally, I do try to test out most of my web sites in lynx to make sure they are accessible! Actually, the one you really want is "eePee", which was an indie project re-released by WEA Canada in 1995. I joined Ecto right around the time that CD came out, and I'm pretty sure it was the topic of several of my first posts to the list. It ended up being one of my favorite releases of that entire year, but subsequent Weeping Tile releases were all disappointments for me as the band's lineup and sound changed. A few months ago, after the band had broken up, I saw Sarah Harmer perform a solo show of old country standards (co-headlining with Sarah Slean and Oh Susanna), and while her performance was good it still failed to rejuvenate my interest in her career. So when I learned she would be performing with Sarah Slean again on her latest tour dates, I expected more of the same and looked forward to seeing her set with lukewarm anticipation. What an exciting surprise - Sarah Harmer launched into songs from a new album - and they sounded a lot like that eePee record! My interest was piqued, then after seeing her again on the same tour this weekend I was convinced, and bought the CD. I haven't spent much time with it yet but I can already tell this is the follow-up to eePee I was hoping for five years ago. Most of the experiments with jangly alternative and old-time country are left off this album, replaced by those strong melodies and vivid pictures painted by Sarah's expressive voice that made eePee so great. Musically, it's a bit inconsistent and the production values are kind of low - typical of a lot of indie records I suppose - but the magic is there in spite of that. I don't know if I'd call it as strong as eePee, but I unexpectedly have new Harmer songs now, so I'm happy!
