Alright...my question. There is a great folk song being played..sounds like a classic of some kind. But I don't know what it is..and I was curious if anyone who had seen the commercial was familiar with the artist and the song.. Over the weekend I have been busy digitising some old tapes from the (deceased?) tape dubbing project. It has so far resulted in one CD of old Happy radio recordings. Most of these are recording from the early nineties up until 1995. I was wondering a few things. 1. Has Happy appeared on any radio shows since? I'm especially thinking of the "Many worlds" era, of course, although I would imagine a little promotion was also done for The Keep, perhaps. 2. Would there be any interest in making the MP3's I've made (after recording the WAV's on CD) available online? I would imagine there's some space on the smoe server and since I have cable it wouldn't be much of a bother for me to upload them to some server space somewhere in the world. 3. And as long as I'm wondering: whatever did happen to the aforementioned tape dubbing project? My presence on ecto has been erratic in the past few years, so I may well have missed a lot. I would imagine that these days trading MP3's would be more practical, but again, that would require some webspace. I for one wouldn't mind getting up 80 minute's worth (or more) of Dutch Ecto-related artists somewhere. That would enable others to burn their own CD's from that, or just listening to them and getting to know something new, which is always a challenge of course! I'll look forward to your reactions. Still relatively new to the list, I went away for 10 days, came back to find almost all my e-mails were from the ecto list. shows you who your friends are, yes? Still feel I have a lot to catch up with, so some random thoughts: 1) My least fave cd sleeve has to be by the indie band scheer for their only (to date) cd, "infliction" -- close up shots of stitched up human skin, mutilations, etc-- it really is quite nauseating (I saw the band open for Throwing Muses about five years ago and they were stunning, but the cd is a disappointment, and nothing else was released) 2) I was disappointed, on my return, to find that of the four cds I ordered from my fave outlet, Pentagon, only two had arrived. I had ordered 2 Happy Rhodes (Equipoise & Building the Colossus) and 2 Laura Love's (Pangaea & Helvitica Bold) and the Rhodes failed to appear, Pentagon only now telling me that thse are "unavailable". I am MOST DISAPPOINTED, as I have yet to hear anything other than Many Worlds. I'm listening to the Love right now, and it sounds pretty good, but while I'm on the subject, could someone fill me in on 2b) what was the deal with Laura's Shum Ticky? Her most recent, it contains versions of songs already released, and has a lot more playful and, well, almost silly atmosphere than Octaroon. I've taken to referring to it as her "Sesame Street album". Is there some concept at work, here, that I've missed? 3) A fly-by-night cd worth checking out is by a group called Somatic, who released one cd, The Bop Apocalypse, last year. Hyped by the label, it got middling reviews, didn't sell, and got them dumped by the said label. Check it out, though, if you can find it -- it has the sound of Portishead crossed with a big band, and has some delicious moments on it. 4)Has anyone mentioned Shelby Lynne? Her cd was much hyped last year, made a series of "Best of the Year" lists, and had critics frothing at the mouth for her "intensity", "honesty" etc. sounded like my cup of tea, so I got it for Xmas, and it has to be the most dismally disappointing cd I've heard for years. The opening track sounds like the Travelling Wilbury's, and it goes downhill from there on in. Slick, processed songs veering from one style to another in an attempt to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, never showing a trace of honesty, confrontation or originality, and clocking in at 36 minutes. Strong parallels with the much-vaunted Macy Gray cd (ohh, I can see that wall of fire heading for me as I write) - a stunningly photogenic singer, hyped for her tragic/unhappy past and her unsettling songwriting and honesty, turns out an album that is nothing more than pleasant and commercial. A couple of Lynne's songs could just have easily been sung by Gray (and better)Anyone else feel that way? 5)glad to read that others feel the same about mirrorball. I was disappointed in the complete lack of live feel in the album, and it bored me. shortly after that, I got jonatha brooke's live cd, and was amazed at the contrast -- hers is so much more low-key intimate, vital, and engaging . 6) no, that'll really have to be it for now. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 02:42:41 -0600 From: "Owen L. Thanks That's "Pink Moon" by Nick Drake, from the album _Pink Moon_ (1972). If you really like that song, you should probably go ahead and pick up the 4-CD boxed set, _Fruit Tree_. It includes everything of Nick Drake's that's been released, so there's no reason not to get it if you like him. Unfortunately, he died in 1974 of apparent suicide, so his three albums plus the CD of miscellaneous material will be all we'll ever have from him. Interesting. The _Mirrorball_ thread made me think of how much I liked Jonatha Brooke's live album, as a contrast. I think part of it for me is the way the crowd clapping and screaming and stuff is faded in and out at the beginning and ending of songs, at certain other intensity points in the songs. It's like the crowd gets so produced on the album. But I have only listened to it a few times, back when it first came out. I put "Fear" on a mix tape, though, and I really like that version. This weekend I put on 10 cent wings (I pulled it out accidentally instead of the Live album but decided to play it anyway). It had been such a long time since I'd listened to it, and I'd forgotten how good it was. Especially good to hear again songs that didn't make the Live album like "Crumbs," "Secrets and Lies," and my favorite, "Landmine." What car commercial is that again with Susan McKeown singing? I heard it the other day, and I was so glad I could go, "there's that car commercial with Susan McKeown singing" instead of wondering if I was going crazy. You guys were right: Tower Records does have _Freedom_, the new Melissa Ferrick. I was able to pick it up Sunday (though I haven't gotten a chance to listen to it yet) and while looking for it in the store, I saw Mila Drumke's _Hip To Hip_ at one of the listening booths-- I was happy to see her getting profiled-- so of course I picked it up (but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet). Next post will be all about Emily Bezar's beyond-fantastic, fabulous, wonderful, intense, and truly mesmerizing performance at the Living Room on Sunday night. When I met Jonatha last fall during an in-store live appearance, I complimented her on the power of that album's song writing and performances. She was delighted that her fans responded so positively to it. "Crumbs" is just an incredible tune with voice and guitar, but I feel the album's version is way overproduced -- in contrast to most of the other songs, which are very tastefully handled... - -- | Greg Dunn | I don't have low self-esteem. | | gregdunn@indy.net | It's a mistake; I have low | | gregdunn@aol.com | esteem for everybody else. | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | Daria | ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 22:15:11 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Misheard lyrics Hi! Her songs are certainly rife with possibilities! yeah, but with tori there's also the danger that you'll confuse something she's saying with something that actually makes sense...you know, she'll sing "the grapefruit is winning" and you'll hear something that's actually sensible in english. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 23:21:22 -0500 From: "Ian Clysdale" Subject: Introduction and Rhea's Obsession Hi, everyone. (That one STILL kills me!) Of course, on the topi cof Tori and misheard lyrics, there's always, "Give me peace, love, and a hot Coke." :) (no, that's not mine either) jcb.
