A 16 > year old New Jersey girl--sort of P.j Harvey with an > organ, as I think Anna Marie said. I think her song > writing is interesting, but I get really sick of her > overdone, shrill organ by the second song. All the > songs are fairly noisy, and lack melody. Not my cup > of tea, but I know that some people on the list > would probably really like her. Yeah, I'm one of the Ecto people who really like her... I ordered her CD after Anna Maria posted about her, as I'm assuming Jeff did, and I've had it for like 2 weeks now and it's just incredible. She's still quite 16 in her lyrical approach, but she's got some major talent and she's going to absolutely blow everybody out of the water once she learns about control... because at the moment, she has absolutely NONE but that's what makes the music and the lyrics so interesting, she's flying all over the place, those keyboard pieces are just extremely strange and wonderful... I did a good bit of research on the 'net about her and found she and her 15-year-old friend named um Donna or Dierdre or something like that released tapes of experimental improvised pieces under the name of Shell... according to the story, they dropped acid and hit the "record" button and just played for an hour and then stopped once the tape ran out. I'm going to order that as soon as I get a bit of extra flow. Woo. One thing that's pretty interesting to me is how her vowels are like Sylvia Plath's... notice: this has NOTHING to do with her writing style, it's all ENTIRELY to do with the way they hold their mouths or whatever... but it's a coincidence, I'm sure, just as Marianne's voice bearing a strange uncanny resemblance to PJ Harvey's is just a coincidence... but anyhow, Marianne's "ooh"s at the end of words, like, "you" and "do" and "through" etc are VERY reminiscent of Sylvia Plath's voice when she was reading her poetry, it's that whole level of poise... and there IS a certain level of sophistication to her stuff beyond her 16-years-old-ness, those songs are so amporphous and strange that I think she has that same internal-logic to her music that Tori Amos has... anyhow. So I'm excited to hear her 3rd or 4th album... by then she'll be shattering small planets with her music, I'm sure of it. In other news: I finally got off my ass and took advantage of Mary Lydia Ryan's offer of both of her albums for $20 and so um they're really really good... there are extremely cheesy moments here and there on the first album, but there are some moments that are absolutely heart-stopping, like "Tale of the Cherub" and "Farewell Ophelia"... but somehow this departure or growth or whatever it may be into jazz is incredible and just such a remarkable change between the first and second albums... and it's neat, there are a few surface similarities between _Diaphanous_ and Jill Tracy's _Diabolical Streak_, though Mary Lydia is much more Chicago 1940s jazz while Jill is much more 1910s London parlour shmoove-ness... but the similarities are there, the certain cabaret descents, the jazzish tones occasionally giving way to crystalline and incredibly gorgeous piano lines. But anyhow... so yeah, I'm finally a big Mary Lydia devotee. So there. ;p John [probably only funny to me] Two-person quote du jour of the day : (after a slight lull in the online banter) ME: *stretch* What are you up to, Baby? What are your favorite misheard/misremembered lyrics? I have a friend whose grandmother used to sing along with the theme from *Ghostbusters* thinking the words went "Who ya gonna call? Dose bastards!" Then there's another friend who heard the "manic Monday" song as "...just another man named Rutnay..." Emily Bezar's latest has given me several good ones. In "Four Walls Bending," I know the words are "I see bocci balls" but just can't help remembering them as "...I see buckyballs..." Then in "Lead" I heard the words "...my six nipples turn to lead..." which, needless to say, prompted an immediate trip to the lyric sheet. I hear she's still got a bit of healing to do, however. The set featured a new drummer, Allison Miller, who played with them once before at a gig in Philadelphia. I found Allison a bit heavy-handed at times, and missed a few of Marc Sacco's nice touches, but I think she's going to fit in fine. Mila announced that her previously-unrecorded song "Blue Light" (the long-unnamed song she plays on the bass) is available on a free promotional sampler disc from Evensong in the UK. To find out how to get it, go to their website at . (Looks like it will cost $4 to be sent to the U.S.) Mila played "Blue Light," but on her red guitar, not on the bass--I didn't get a chance to ask which version is on the promo album. Mila also debuted a new song, called "And Days Go By," which sounds a bit "Motorboat"ish. Before the song she announced that at first she really didn't know what the song was about, but then realized it was about breaking both your arms and having your car stolen in the same months. "But it's not depressing," she added. The venue was quite crowded. Next show: Mercury Lounge Sat.
