The pieces that I would recommend are "La > Mer", "Three Nocturnes", "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" and "Suite > Bergamasque". All of the above, except Suite Bergamasque (which I haven't heard) are among my favorite pieces of classical music, period. I've rarely made it through Noctures - particularly the third, Sirenes - without crying (just to hark back to some of our old threads about tear-inducing music). Another favorite composer of mine is Ottorino Respighi. If you like early music at all, you might enjoy Ancient Airs and Dances, which are old Elizabethan songs that he arranged for a string orchestra. Another great one is The Pines of Rome. (This was the principal reason I went to see Fantasia 2000, by the way - but what a disappointment! Flying whales?! I'd always pictured deep pine forests, filled with wildflowers and waterfalls, and shafts of sunlight striking the floor, etc.) I also love his "tone poem" called Church Windows, which I don't think is as popular (at least it's never mentioned in lists of his work) but which I think deserves a listen. But here's a question I might be able to answer. Cyoakha asked about Squonk Opera only days after I picked up the February Time Out New York magazine because of the Kids In The Hall cover. There's a full page ad and a review of something called "Squonk" playing at the Helen Hayes Theatre. The web address is listed as www.squonknet.com if you'd like to check them out. And if you're in the Charlotte area the last weekend in March, come see me in "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum". . . ^_^ That Ted guy again ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 10:38:39 -0500 From: hooligan Subject: Re: NYC Metro TV & radio ad: Kohl's It sounds a lot like Angela McCluskey of The Wild Colonials, but I'm not certain that it's actually her. -mj. on 2/27/00 12:25 AM, MockRafe@aol.com at MockRafe@aol.com wrote: > Hello there... The pieces that I would recommend are "La > > Mer", "Three Nocturnes", "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" and "Suite > > Bergamasque". Suite Bergmasque, of course, contains "Clair de lune", one of the most haunting and beautiful melodies of all time. Anyone know of a definitive performance of that? Most of the performances I own are "add-ons" to other music in a collection, and they are ... weak. :-) While riffling through the collection to search out correct spellings, I found two other favorites: a Bizet collection on DGG containing L'arlesienne Suites 1 & 2, along with "Carmen" (Karajan; Berlin Philharmonic) -- and a Russian collection on RCA with Rimsky-Korsakov's "Russian Easter Overture" and Borodin's "Polovtsian Dances". All highly musical stuff, and suitable for rainy afternoon listening... - -- | Greg Dunn | I may just skip college and stay | | gregdunn@indy.net | home. Hi all, I just received an email from a guy in Ireland who is looking for information on a performer named Spyche. I did some internet searches and found a couple of places to buy cds but no info as to how to reach her. This person who wrote to me runs a radio station and wants to contact her. Anyone have any clues? He said he thought she lived in Texas? Thanks for any help you can give. ~Amy ecalos.com - Women in Music http://www.ecalos.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 10:08:42 -0800 (PST) From: "Scott S. Zimmerman" Subject: 80mm/3" cd adapters Does anybody know where I can find adapters for 80mm (3") compact discs? Certain lame cd players won't play them because of their small size, but I guess there is something you can snap on to them to make them acceptable.... I could probably use 25++ if they're inexpensive. Web searches provide no help for me on the subject...
