My name's Katherine, incidentally, and it looks like I'll have the opportunity to interview Happy Rhodes for a literary magazine I work on. I was just wondering if there were any fascinating questions out there that I should ask her. Who better qualified than the people on this list, right? Thanks for any replies! - - Katherine "I can think about having sex with 88 peacocks and it's not a crime, but in reality, you know, they might not be up for it!" - Bjork ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 14:16:24 EST From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: misc. things Meredith wrote: And while I'm here, this has nothing whatsoever to do with music, but: if you're located in the U.S. and so inclined to sit through a documentary about Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton, check out "The Duel", part of the American Experience series on PBS. It's on a 9 pm Eastern, 8 pm Central, and it appears to be scheduled on most of the PBS stations. Interestingly enough, this actually fits into my new life, as my new job is at Oxford U. Press and they (fairly?) recently published a book on Hamilton and Burr (exact title I forget) and one of the editors I work for edited it. Ecto is such a small world at times. Secondly, I've been meaning to write, but never have time to check my e-mail, and *finally* I just figured out how to turn cookies on so I can use hotmail from work. Anyway, what I was going to write (and so will write now) was about the Magnolia soundtrack. I absolutely love it. Haven't seen the movie yet, but I listen to the soundtrack almost daily, and usually 2 or more times in a row when I put it on. That was actually the first cd I got in over a month. I think I bought it last weekend (the 5/6 weekend) and I hadn't bought anything music since before Christmas which is absolutely amazing (and somewhat appalling) to me. I also got that day Tori's single for Concertina, and I was going to write also and say that I really love the remix of the song on the single. I like it even better than the original on To Venus & Back. And I don't usually care for Tori remixes. (Was that Hey Jupiter remix necessary?) The 2 live tracks, Twinkle and Famous Blue Raincoat, are good too. Thank you for the friendly farewell at the Seattle Art Museum and for sending your friends out to my shows. I met some great people and hope to return soon. They're really good too, I really enjoyed the show. This is going to be a really cheap comparison, but think Ani Difranco crossed with the Indigo Girls. I love it all, usually "save our souls" and "mother sea" more than the rest. Today, however, I felt captivated by the story in "he will come" and "the flight". Hmmm. I must be in a vampiric-sort of mood. ;) - ---Mickey n.p. Kate Rusby, "Sleepless" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 17:21:31 -0500 From: Steve I Subject: Mute Cute Girl Hey folks, Haven't posted in a while (pretty behind on my digests too) I've been meaning to post about one of Sarah Slean's shows that happened a few weeks ago. Some people here, especially Neal and anyone else who went to her Philly show only to find a mute Sarah, may recall that she was stricken down with viral laryngitis a few weeks back. Poor Sarah was forced to cancel all her shows during her illness, that is, all her shows save one. In Toronto, Sarah belongs to a strongly mutually supportive group of songwriters, and when the word went out the day before her Toronto show that she could not sing and could use some voices, they responded. Several talented local artists selected a favourite Sarah song and then showed up at the venue the next night armed with lyric sheets and instruments but no time to practice with Sarah and the band. No one knew who had selected what until minutes before the show; the show was literally cobbled together at the last minute (and beyond - the show was a bit late in starting). Unfortunately some of the artists picked the same songs and were unable to perform; others shared the vocal duties, adapting the solo renditions they'd prepared into duets. The performances that *did* happen though were spontaneous and fun and truly magical. The guest vocalists that night were Jay Englishman (better known as Esthero's brother), Kurt Swinghammer (known for playing guitar with Ani Difranco and the Wild Strawberries), Sarah Harmer (Weeping Tile), Dave Matheson (Moxy Fruvous), Coco Love Alcorn, Tory Cassis, Oh Susanna & Leslie Feist (Feist & By Divine Right), Moe Berg (the Pursuit of Happiness), and Sjanie McInnis. It was a revelation to hear completely different takes of Sarah's songs by other talented songwriters. Some of them were simply phenomenal. Sarah in fact wrote to me later that she can never do "My Invitation" again (after hearing Sarah Harmer's version). Anyways we have recordings of some of the songs from that night and are featuring them on sarahslean.com. Point your browsers at: http://www.sarahslean.com/ssmus-mutecutegirl.htm We'll have a new song up every few days. Right now it's Sarah Harmer's version of "My Invitation". Steve P.S., that's so cool that the House o Muzak will be the location of a future Sarah Slean living room show!
