I'm excited, it's amazing to me that I clicked with them so well and was able to appreciate them on both a musical level *and* a personal level... our senses of humor and what we believed in tended to really overlap, which was just rockin'. Anyhow. I'll shut up now. Melanie "Unplugged" What is says. Stripped down versions of her best known songs. Great cover of Purple Haze...Brilliant and lovely stuff. Voltaire "The Devil's Bris" Not that Voltaire obviously, he's dead. This Voltaire is very much alive and sounds like Nick Cave with a more obvious sense of humour. Morbid, but delightful stuff. Heaven west Eleven "Dawn" Pleasant radiofriendly pop with a few twists..Occasionally Katey vocals. Lacy James "Lovefeast" Great stuff.Has slightly synthetic drum sounds, but is otherwise brave and stunning music. Anna Maria __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? You're referring to the "I've got a brand new pair of roller skates" Melanie, right? I will have a listen provided somebody out there can assure me that the afore mentioned song is not typical of her body of work, 'cause that one still fuels my nightmares occasionally. > Voltaire "The Devil's Bris" > Not that Voltaire obviously, he's dead. I just tossed out a hundred year old box of Celestial Seasonings Red Zinger Tea that had a quote on the side of the box that said something like "If Voltaire had not existed it would not have been necessary to create him"...(this must be some sort of celestial ecto plasmic event!) Her stories are as much a part of the performance as the songs themselves; that's one thing about her that has always been a bit different, and unfortunately also made sure that her performances are very hard to translate into a decent recording. So yes, if there is anyone here who lives in Australia/NZ and hasn't yet seen Penelope, well - go and check her out for yourself. She can be called folk, but by her own account she didn't go down too well with the traditional folkies in England... it's one of her stories you might get to hear. Besides stories and stage presence, she also has a great voice (there are a couple of short samples on my site.) She turns out to have other talents as well: she recently learned the art of making guitars (most impressive to someone like me who could never hit a nail straight). But because this is Penelope after all, she makes her guitars using gourds rather than more traditional wood. If you've always felt like something was missing in your life but you didn't quite know what, possibly you need a gourd guitar - in which case I'm sure Penelope would make you one :) np: Andrea Parker, "kiss my arp" - Yummy... - ------------------------------------------------------ "If we took a random sampling of observers of the same sunset, chances are a few would think the sun got larger, a few would insist it stayed the same size, and an appallingly large number would have been looking in the wrong direction." -- Dr. Science - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Feb 2000 11:20:35 -0500 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Recent listening On Mon, Feb 07, 2000 at 12:58:05AM -0800, anna maria stjärnell wrote: > Melanie "Unplugged" > What is says. So there I was reading this, and trying to figure out if this was Mel C or Mel G, and what either of them might do to get this review. I called the station and the DJ told me it was from a collection of Ruichi Sakamoto's film scores entitled Cinema. I just tried amazon.com and did not find that title - does anyone have any information about this album? Sakamoto wrote and performed the film score, and Sylvian did several vocal tracks. The film came out in the early 80s and had David Bowie in a lead role. Cheers, Dave. That album hasn't been released yet in the States - it is supposed to come out on Sony Classical, but the best source of information would be the man's own website: http://www.sitesakamoto.com/ I have his two _Raw Life_ sets (Osaka and Tokyo) and have been promising myself that I'd play them eventually.
