First, the less so. Superkreme's first disc _Superkreme_ came to my attention because it's a combination of two of my favorite Cleveland groups, now defunct. The lead singer from The Waynes is now co-lead with Superkreme, and the rythm section of a band I'm sure plenty of the listees have heard me talk about before, Jehova Waitresses. :-) It's pop in the Matthew Sweet vein, so it may be not everyone's cup of tea (as I sip on orange pecoe...:-). I like Matt Sobol's - the ex-lead with The Waynes and co-lead with Superkreme - voice and writing, so I just had to get it. :-) It's not bad, not bad at all, and I'm glad to see him continue. However, his co-lead, co-songwriter is very different, as she writes "darker" music. Not bad, but a definite night and day difference in some songs. The very ectoish acquisition I think everyone should at least listen to. Her name is Sarah Lentz, and I "found" her while perusing mp3.com. I was so enthralled with her music I sent her a check for her CD (yes, you can get it through amazon and cdnow, but thought it was better to send the money to her direct, as she would be able to pocket it all). The CD is called _no going home_ and is superb! Her voice is in the tenor-range, and I think she's a classically-trained pianist. Quite beautiful music! Knowing the tastes around here, I bet there are a lot of people who would enjoy her. You can see her site at http://www.sarahlentz.com. I have been in email contact with her, and she's a very nice person as well. Those in the New York area should definitely check her out - I wish I could see her live. I second that. "No Going Home" is great. The mp3 capable (and curious) should definitely go to www.mp3.com/sarahlentz and listen. Her music is somewhat in line with the Fiona Apple sound... mp3.com (exclusively) has a special dam ep available which has 5 tracks, 3 of which as far as I can tell are the the same versions of songs that appear on the album, plus a live version of an album cut, plus something not available on the album at all. Again Sarah's official website is at www.sarahlentz.com - the full length disc is available from loads of websites, including my pet project www.tweekitten.com on sale for the moment at $11.95. :) - -Scott ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Feb 2000 17:16:00 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Throwing Muses Boston event in May! Well, here's my rather belated review of the Map Music concert in Vancouver last December 16. Belated, as I got back from New Zealand a couple weeks ago and have still been trying to get my life in order, post-trip. I wasn't originally going to go to the show, simply because the date was just too close to my holiday departure, and I knew I'd be in last-minute scramble mode at work, trying to tie up loose ends. But then I was offered a free pass from Map Music via Neile Graham, and decided it was too good an opportunity to miss. So. I hereby begin this review by being a good ethical critic and pointing out that I Did Not Pay to Attend This Gig. I'd also like to mention a few words about the Commodore. The Commodore Ballroom is a venerable performance space in downtown Vancouver and a long-time fixture on the Canadian rock touring scene. It closed a few years ago amid much lamentation, but recently re-opened under new ownership after a long fallow period and heavy renovation. The Map Music Live Showcase was billed as the first electronic music gig in the revived Commodore, and I have to say the place is looking pretty chic. The old sprung wooden dancefloor, that once caused frightening levels of creaking in the Granville Book Company downstairs on many an eve, may be a thing of the past, but the space has been opened up considerably and finished to a fine level of detail. It's great to have a classy venue like this in town, and also great to see it being used as a showcase for local talent. Though I do have to wonder if the army of burly black-clad security guards with black polycarbonate earpiece/mike radio headsets was really necessary - were they expecting rioting deep house fans or something? The evening was a real social event for the local electronic music scene. Three local DJs spun sets through the night, though there wasn't that much dancing until the first live band. People mainly hung around, chatting over drinks. So I wandered around and ended up running into a dozen or so friends and acquaintances, which was a pleasant surprise. Also gave me time to appreciate the new space - the new dancefloor bracketed to either side by shoals of tables, the spacious balcony, the windows overlooking Granville. Cooldown, featuring vocalist Miss Benny, was the first act to hit the stage. And I have to admit I was a bit surprised by what they turned out to be. All the promo material I'd read had said how they're a real trip-hoppy band, drawing breathless parallels to acts like Portishead and Massive Attack. And so I was sort of expecting a trip-hop sound. Well, I didn't hear it. Not that I'm complaining, but I am left puzzling over the message of the promotional writeups - has the band's sound changed of late or something? When I heard them they were an elusive blend of styles and influences, but overall I'd say they had much too electric and funky a sound to be trip-hop. Certainly very high-energy and upbeat. They had a big chunk of the crowd dancing enthusiastically within moments. Miss Benny herself was a striking stage presence in a flowing red dress and long blonde hair. A powerful, unique voice and obviously the driving force behind the band itself, which was a sizeable collective of players. Individually the performers were very strong - the rhythm guitarist and bassist in particular seemed very tight. But the mix was a bit odd. I could hardly hear the percussionist and keyboardist, for example. Indeed, the fact that the only electronic instrument on stage was barely audible made the band's billing in an electronic gig seem somewhat curious. Unfortunately, beyond technical matters, I felt the band as a whole didn't quite mix either. There were times when parts of the band seemed to be pulling in different directions, as though they weren't entirely in consensus about what they wanted to do. I don't know if it's because they hadn't been playing together for that long or what, but I never felt I was listening to an entirely finished product. I feel a bit bad about saying that, because the band did put out some great high-energy music, and I had a good time. (and two band members are friends of friends) But all the while there was a nagging feeling that, although there were some terrific pieces on the stage, they weren't quite coming together as a whole. Leanne was the last DJ of the night, playing after Cooldown, and it was a pleasure to hear her set as always. Basically pretty groovy house. As a sidenote, though, it's interesting to me how different DJs work when they spin. I saw Mark Farina (Mushroom Jazz/San Francisco Sessions) last week, and he moved around fairly casually behind the turntables, bopping around unconsciously to the beat. Leanne, on the other hand, has a fiercely intense concentration when she spins. I think a bomb could go off during one of her sets and she wouldn't notice unless the power went with it. The final act of the night was Pilgrims of the Mind. In stark contrast to the Cooldown set, the Pilgrims stage presence felt firmly minimalist and tightly controlled. Stephane Novak, the man behind Pilgrims, stood behind an imposing rank of electronic gear, and an accomplice on turntables stood to his right. To either side stood a pair of large projection-screen ovals, displaying 16 mm and slide visuals. From time to time jazz vocalist Sara Marreiros came to the front and lent her excellent vocals to the mix. That was the setting. And from the opening beats it was clear that we were in the hands of total professionals. The sound, basically house music with tentacles moving off into other directions, was polished, engaging and cool. A complex blend of drum loops, various samples, scratching, the vocals for several tracks. Expertly mixed and very impressive. It was intriguing how Cooldown and Pilgrims represented different and contrasting musical directions, in a sense. Cooldown was about the sweaty energy of a live gig - electric and miked acoustic instruments with a strong stage presence, whereas Pilgrims was more about the live reconstruction of intricately designed loops, samples, programmed patterns and minimal stage personality. I say "in a sense," because of course it isn't that simple - Cooldown had programmed loops and Pilgrims was far from a canned show, particularly given the skills of their guest vocalist. But nonetheless it made an interesting contrast for the evening. And there we have it. A good time was had by me. I admit I wasn't totally blown away by Cooldown, but I'd be interested to see what directions Miss Benny and friends move in in the future. However, I was quite impressed by Pilgrims of the Mind and will definitely be checking them out in future. There are a few RealAudio samples at http://www.mapmusic.com/ for anyone interested by any of this. - - Neil K. (Incidentally, in other electronic-music news, American trance pioneer BT (Brian Transeau) has signed to Nettwerk Canada and America, which is pretty cool. Nettwerk will be releasing his most recent album in North America, with a different track listing from the original UK release. To make this remark vaguely ectophilic I should mention that he's worked with Tori on a couple projects and is responsible for tons of remixes, including the trance-anthem reworking of Sarah's "I Love You". This latter track is included on the soon-to-be-released Plastic 3 along with the Matt Darey remix of Delerium's "Heaven's Earth".
