In a couple of long-ago postings I asked for all of you with bad burns to send me your wasted CD-R's. I use them as optical elements in a 3D camera http://home.earthlink.net/~scan3d DVD blanks work even better. When DIVX went under, I scored a dozen for a dollar each, and as d. suggests, spent some time trying to lift the embedded aluminum layer out from inside the polycarinate sandwich. As a rule you can't do this with spent CD-R's, because the active layer is on the top and painted over. This is not to detract from the conversion of dead CD's, be they unsolicted AOL junk mail or failed burns, into rainbow art. I have been using a scoring knife to cut CD's to pieces, and surely they can be reassembled into glittering celebrations of light as well as diffraction range finders. DeWey, now three, loves playing with gratings like these. Despite the posting not too long ago about Aimee (and hubby Michael Penn) playing at both the Birchmere and the Ramshead, I put off getting tickets. Too long, apparently, as they were both sold out when I tried to get tickets yesterday. The happy news, for anybody in my shoes, is that they're swinging back through DC after their NYC stint. They'll be back at the Birchmere on 2/22 (tuesday) -- a fact that as of last night wasn't evening listed on the Birchmere web page. However, Ticketbastard was more than happy to extort lots of convenience charges from me to buy tickets for the show. jeff n.p. _Mercy_, Lisa Cerbone (hi, Neal...glad your move went well) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 09:28:50 -0700 From: neal Subject: Re: Aimee Mann in dc At 10:35 AM 1/28/00 -0500, jburka@min.net wrote: >The problem with your favorite artists finally gaining (or in this case >re-gaining) the popularity they so deserve is that when they come to town, >you can't get tickets. I was just talking to Jeff (Hanson) about that last night. I don't follow what's popular that well, so it's only been the fact that a surprising number of people seem to be aware of Ms. Mann now that hadn't heard of her before that tipped me off. I've had friends tell me they saw Magnolia and it was full of fantastic music and did I know who it was! Hard for me to imagine, but I guess being prominantly featured in a movie is the best way to get your music heard. I had seen that her shows were selling out though, as they added a second show to where she was playing in Philly. >The happy news, for anybody in my shoes, is that they're swinging back >through DC after their NYC stint. Reading that and > Zelazny's "Lord of Light" in quick succession when I was 15-ish nearly > melted my mind. _Lord of Light_ is one my favorite books, and I think the best of Zelazny's mythology-inspired novels (it's based on Hindu and Buddhist mythology). _Creatures of Light and Darkness_ is good, but much stranger; I'm not sure whether that's because the Egyptian mythology that it's based on is that strange or that Zelazny was in a really weird mood that year. It's definitely worth reading for bits like the agnostic's prayer, which is purely hilarious. There's also _This Immortal_ (based on Greek mythology) but it didn't make nearly as much of an impression on me as those other two. And while I'm on the topic of books -- go forth and read anything you can find by Linda Nagata. I picked up _Vast_ in a bookstore on a whim and was immediately drawn in by the first chapter. It does live up to its title, spanning hundreds of years of time and light-years of space while still being a very human story. I've since gone on to read _Deception Well_ and _The Bohr Maker_, which turns out to be in reverse chronological order, as they do share some characters and history; however, the books each stand well on their own. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2000 17:33:06 EST From: Jaggedgrl5@aol.com Subject: Susan Mckeown tour date question please read Hello, I am trying to get information on how to get the phone number to the venue that Susan is playing at on March 16 in Boston,MA at Johnny D's if anyone knows how I can go about getting tickets to this please let me know I am coming from NY so if you have the number to the venue please let me know . It is really wierd, and I wondered if it would hold together a bit better if I had a general knowledge of the Egyptian mythology to build off of it. As it stands, the people, their relationships, powers and tales seem almost arbitrary. Epic in scope, but often only addressed in passing as an aside in a relatively short book. > It's definitely worth reading for bits like the >agnostic's prayer, which is purely hilarious. Yes, the Possibly Proper Death Litany is certainly a highpoint. I will be typing that one in to share with a few friends. That's what I want said over me when I die! >There's also _This >Immortal_ (based on Greek mythology) but it didn't make nearly as much >of an impression on me as those other two. Yeah, I read it many years ago with similar reactions. Though it's possible I read this in high school too. I read a bunch of Zelazny books and don't really remember any of them, which is part of what prompted this reading.
