Some recent listening.. Mary Coughlan"Under the Influence" One of my favourite singers. This is her first record. She sings traditional irish songs,Gershwin tunes and Billie Holiday's Strange fruit with her velvety heavily accented voice. I forgot to mention her when someone asked about torch singers..To me she is the queen of torch. No one can sing with the same impact about failed love. Magoria "The Divine Child" Hm.. Starts interestingly but quickly becomes Enigmaesque drones about spirituality in a very new age fashion(eek!). Has some nice tunes but the lyrics are really awaful. Randy Newman "Bad Love" Much nicer. Suitably sarcastic and affecting songs.I'm a newcomer to Newman's work but this is very inspired stuff. I definitely *don't* recommend a stand-alone dual deck CD burner. For one thing, the blank disks are much more expensive than computer CD-R's. For another, the decks don't always work perfectly when you're putting selections from several different CDs onto a single CD. Over 25 percent of the time I get errors when trying to record my own compilations. The major downside to computer CD burners is that you usually can't do anything else with your computer while copying a CD. Even a screen saver can ruin a CD. - --Bill At 07:33 PM 1/26/00 -0600, you wrote: > Hi, several months ago there was discussion on CD-R vs CD-RW. At that >time I didn't pay that much attention. Hapster, if this gets to you, I found the perfect "thing" for you to have, it's at: http://www.mcphee.com/bigindex/current/10364.html I would have just bought it and mailed it to you, but that seems like a "gushy" fan thing, as a fellow musician I have an image to uphold (that is to be totally detached and aloof) so instead I invite you to buy it and I will make a donation to Meals on wheels in your honor. btw- I bought one of these, it is so cute in person. All you ectopians should get one. I've moved back to New Mexico, managing to get my move from Maryland finished 1 day before they shut the state down. And I was complaining about 4 to 6 inches of snow last week delaying my move by a day! So change your mail aliases and filters appropriately :) Supposedly my last east coast concert event was going to be driving to Philly to see Sarah Slean at The Point. Maybe i should have been more specific in my plans, since I did actually do that. Unfortunately, I'd have been even happier to see Sarah Slean PLAY. She had laryngitis and while she was there selling CD's, she couldn't even make a sound. Ah well. (Sorry I missed you Tony. Thanks again for all the info.) So anyway, the weekly here in New Mexico has something akin to our very own "np" in it. It's called "In My Room", and at the end of the music reviews, they list the top 10 recent releases of interest. Well, number 10 was Reel Life Vol 1 by Wild Colonials. Anyone heard this? I loved the first album and was less passionate about the second (though after many many listens it started to grow on me more). And I had noticed they did an accoustic show in Baltimore a month or so ago when I was out of town. They were an amazing live band the one time I saw them. Scottish woman sings lead and covers a wide range of styles. Songs to the Invisible God - Ruth Wieder Magan: Joe Zitt mentioned this a few weeks ago. I had picked it up a few days before that, with the thought that if I posted a review then, I'd beat Joe and Jeff Burka to a disc they'd obviously be interested in. Well, much more my style, I only listened to it a few days ago, and was entranced. I only have a boom box here, so everything sounds mediocrely recorded, so I didn't hear anything about limited recording quality that Joe mentioned. It's all unaccompanied solo voice singing traditional prayers in Hebrew. Recorded in Ein Karem, the Notre Dame deSIon monastery, the music is also an experiment of voice in space, where a lot of attention went into how the natural accoustics and echoes affected the sound. I haven't really paid much attention to the latter, but the music itself is very beautiful. It's on Sounds True records. I haven't looked at their web site, but it's www.soundstrue.com neal np: Home - Caspar Brotzmann Massaker nr: Creatures of Light and Darkness - Roger Zelazny ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2000 16:45:35 +0000 From: jjhanson@worldnet.att.net Subject: Re: Catching Up > So anyway, the weekly here in New Mexico has something akin to our very > own "np" in it. I posted a similar question a couple of weeks ago when I first saw this on his playlist. I did some research--aparently the album was to be released this past Tuesday, and it's a collection of film music that Wild Colonials has given to soundtracks. (The one I remember is a Tom Jones cover that appears on the Mr. Wrong soundtrack--It's Not Unusual). I hadn't realized they had enough soundtrack material to fill an album, and haven't seen a tracklist so don't know if it has new material or not. I'll definitely be checking it out though. Just looked it up on Amazon-- here's the track list: 1. It's Not Unusual (from "Mr. Wrong") 2. This Misery (from "Unhook The Stars") 3. Friend (from "Inertia") 4. Anything But Love (from "Flirting With Disaster") - Angela McCluskey/Dr. John 5. Battle Won, The (from "Countdown") - Tryptich 6. Brokedown Palace (from "Brokedown Palace") 7. Cure, The (from "Cabin By The Lake") 8. Coy (from "Love's Deadly Triangle") - (new mix) 9. Route 15 4:30am (from "I Shot A Man In Vegas") - Shark N' The Smoke 10. If By Chance (from "Southie") - Wild Colonials/Cyndi Lauper 11. I'm Leaving (from "Silent Nights") - Scott Roewe 12. Day Ditty (from "First Love, Last Rites") - Shudder To Think/Angela McCluskey 13. Evil (from "The Motorcycle Gang (Rebel Highway)") 14. Shadows (from "Dead Man's Curve") - Los Colonials Savage (edit) 15. Victim (from "The Last Supper") - (instrumental) Defintely sounds intriguing. > nr: Creatures of Light and Darkness - Roger Zelazny Wow--what brought this on? I always loved Zelazny, until he started pumping out drivel (the Amber chronicles past the first five just did not impress me). Jeff Hanson n.p.
