The Wild Strawberries are a duo from Toronto. A married couple, in fact - Roberta Carter Harrison (vocals) and Ken Harrison (music). Nettwerk released three Wild Strawberries albums - Heroine, Quiver and an album from their back-catalogue that predated Heroine, Bet You Think I'm Lonely. Of the three, Quiver is the edgiest and least poppy of the lot, but very cool. Quite a few of Sarah's musicians played on it. As you noted, they are no longer on Nettwerk. There's one other album (Grace) and two EPs from their back-catalogue that Nettwerk never released, but I've no idea where you can get them. wildstrawberries.com hasn't been updated in a while. - Neil K. - -- t e l a computer consulting + design * Vancouver, BC, Canada web: http://www.tela.bc.ca/tela/ * email: tela@tela.bc.ca ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 19:49:52 +0000 From: jjhanson@worldnet.att.net Subject: Mary's Idaho & Utah Adventure (fwd) Hi--for any ectophiles in Seattle, Utah or Idaho, Seattle chanteuse Mary Lydia Ryan will be playing dates in your area. At that >time I didn't pay that much attention. I am thinking of buying a >stand alone, dual deck CD burner (Webtv is not a computer). Kerry, the big problem with most stand-alone CD recorders made for use on a home stereo system instead of a computer is that they will only accept "Audio" CD-R media. "Audio" CD-Rs are exactly the same as the normal CD-Rs you would use in your computer for music, except they have some code on them that tells the stand-alone CD recorder it's ok to use. And of course they cost 10 times as much (ok that may be an exaggeration but not by much). This is a result of the big record companies' attempts to stop digital recording when it was first developed. Equipment manufacturers were forced to put an anti-copy code into their equipment called SCMS, theoretically to keep everyone from making digital copies of music CDs. In addition to that, CD Recorders were given the "Audio-CD-only" restriction, and I believe the extra cost of the media may be some kind of tax that goes to the music cartel, although I'm not entirely sure. Anyway, all this has just forced manufacturers and consumers to find creative ways around it. In the case of DAT decks, this means you have to buy a "Professional" model at a music (instrument) store instead of a consumer electronics store in order to get the version without SCMS copy protection. The basic "Professional" model is often about the same as the consumer model with the addition of XLR inputs, rack mount handles, and double the price tag. In the case of CD recorders, since a computer CD burner can be used to store data, not just music, it's exempt from the music industry crap. (That didn't stop them from trying to implement a tax on every blank CD-R sold in Canada but the public outcry was enough to thwart that at the 11th hour). However, you'll probably want to look into the media requirements for the stand-alone CD Recorder you're considering, and check the prices of blank "Audio" CDs before you decide to subsidize the Backstreet Boys, EMI, Time-Warner and, of course, now AOL. Good luck, Dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 21:22:29 -0500 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: RE: CDR vs CDRW If you are considering a dual deck CD burner, then you are looking at audio CDR. CDRW is only relevant to computer CD burners. CDRW can be erased and burned again. CDRs are one shot deals. Botch them and you have a coaster. A computer burner can burn data or audio on a CDR or a CDRW. A home audio burner can only burn audio on audio CDRs. It takes a newer, more sensitive CD player to play audio CDRWs. CDRs generally work fine in all but the oldest cheapest players. Blank audio CDR media are more expensive than blank computer CDR media, as the RIAA copy surcharge is included in the price of the former. The difference was about $4-5 audio CDR media vs $1-2 computer CDR media. I think it was reported here that an audio CD burner deck must use the audio CDR media. A computer burner can use either audio or computer grade CDRs. And this factoid I found from experience: If someone creates a CD for me using an audio CD burner, I cannot then digital copy that to minidisc nor DAT (and presumably not to another audio CDR using an audio CD burning deck). The technical explanation for this is that the SCMS copy protection scheme is respected in all these digital audio formats, and that permits ONE digital copy only. This does NOT happen using a computer CDR burner. I don't know if its true for all audio decks, but some force a 2 second gap between tracks on the burned CD. This can be a problem if you're trying to use an audio deck to create a CD from a live concert tape. You must either accept the gaps or record the whole disc as one long track. On a computer CD burner, you can control these finer aspects of recording and tracking (software and patience permitting). Hope this helps. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 20:26:48 -0600 From: Talamasca Subject: RE: CDR vs CDRW At 07:33 PM 01/26/2000 -0600, kerry white wrote: > Hi, several months ago there was discussion on CD-R vs CD-RW. I don't know everything about the two, but I do know this: music CD-Rs will play pretty much anywhere, but music CD-RWs are much more limited, may only play on a computer CD-ROM drive. If your primary purpose is to copy music CDs to play on a stereo (which I would assume is true if you would not have a computer to use data CDs with), you might just want to go with CD-R, have no reason for the W. CD-RWs are more useful for making intermittent file copies and backups of data. (OTOH, they might be considered useful for making test copies of music CDs, or to store songs temporarily until they are burned onto CD-R.)
