How could I have forgotten her? I cannot answer that but I can assure it wont happen again in a hurry. I have just bought "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight" which I saw in a local CD store. The problem is that I live in Europe (Sweden to be more precise)and Happy stuff is hard to come by here. Anyway, I LOVE the album I bought and it feels great to have come back into the fold. Be Kind to my mistakes, Allen p.s. Can anyone suggest some other Happy albums to start adding to my collection? ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? No kidding. Jazz harp is a sub-genre I'd never heard about before today, but I was watching the Jazz Channel on cable tv and saw a musician I'd never heard before, either: Jeff Majors. Way back in late '98, I got the chance to see Jenn Kimball at a living room show in Cincinnati, which was a real treat (Hi, Jill! Still with us?). Almost absent-mindedly I signed up for her mailing list, and have been receiving the odd Email from time to time informing of concerts, news, etc. A few weeks ago I read the latest message, and was delighted to find that she was playing here in Indy, only a few miles from where I lived (OK, 20 miles, but so what). I signed up in a heartbeat. It's always interesting to walk into a small show and chat with people you've met before; however, this time I didn't recognize a soul. Cindy, who organized and kindly hosted tonight's concert, had been at the previous show I attended, but somehow I managed to miss meeting her... Ah well. There was plenty to eat (thanks all!), new people to meet, and a lot of gadgetry sitting on the floor where the principals had performed their sound check earlier. I paid my ticket fee and settled down to wait for the show. I would guess about 35 people crammed into Cindy's comfy but not overlarge house, with people arriving up till and even past the show's start. Even though clearly stated in Jenn's announcement, I had completely spaced who was playing guitar for her. I was shaken back to reality when she walked into the living room along with a slight, cheerful-looking fellow introduced as "Marc". None other than the marvelous session guitarist Marc Shulman, whom I belatedly remembered was a contributor to her recording sessions and live shows... The concert started with Jenn on acoustic guitar playing "Kissing In The Car", one of the quirky, excellent tunes off her solo album. Marc proved his value immediately by threading some amazingly tasteful electric guitar parts into the spaces vacated by Jenn's rhythmic accompaniment. She alternated new and "old" songs for the first 40 minute set, bringing in "Revelations" and a few in-progress works to counterpoint her "Veering From The Wave" and the breathtaking "Gagna's Song". She moved effortlessly from guitar to ukulele to her famous strumstick, and back to guitar, her girlish but strong voice now a whisper, then a sustained crooning, always just right. I confess I was lured away from Jenn's strong performance on many songs by Marc's beautiful guitar work. I have rarely seen a guitarist put so much emotion into accompaniment... he was constantly switching effects in and out, adjusting the volume, tweaking, searching for the ideal tone to match Jenn's chords and arpeggios. Occasionally the song called for a longer exposition, whereupon he would bend, twist, and wring the neck of his electric, introducing subtle vibrato and sustained growls to augment the delicate sequence of notes woven into the fabric of the song. Marc earned spontaneous applause for these well-timed counterpoints; it was indeed a mesmerizing display for all its low-key presentation. And a wonderful display of teamwork between the two... During the break, I had a chance to talk to Marc, and he was delighted to find that I had been in the audience at Jewel's private 1996 Bearsville show ("Jewelstock"), remembering that as one of his favorite stage appearances. We swapped musical anecdotes until time for the second set, which found Jenn switching to the keyboard for most of the songs. Mostly new tunes, punctuated by her well-received "East of Indiana" and a singalong rendition of her Beach Boys favorite "God Only Knows"; finally wrapping up with "It's A Long Way Home". At her silent encouragement, Marc stepped out for a couple of longer solos toward the end, evoking gasps and exclamations from the normally silent audience. Happily, they returned for an encore, which Jenn turned into a singalong of the Crowded House tune "Fall At Your Feet". With the enthusiastic harmonies of the audience, accompaniment by a talented local conga player (whose name I've forgotten, sorry), Jenn's sparse chords and Marc's singing solos, it became the highlight of the second set and a fitting way to end the show. Everyone hung out to talk afterward, and I found myself again chatting with Marc about music, techniques, and musicians. He very kindly gave me a signed set list to remember the evening, and with profuse thanks I reluctantly disengaged to let him finish packing and prepare for the inevitable long drive to the next show. I did take a few moments to thank Jenn for her appearance, and to pass along good wishes from a couple of her acquaintances. Then it was out the door, to try and get a review posted before that necessary evil, sleep, overcame me. Altogether a fascinating evening, with the rare chance to witness a delightful synergy between two wonderful musicians. Hopefully Jenn will pass through again on the release of her new album, due within a year. It's guaranteed to be worth the wait. - -- | Greg Dunn | And all you touch and all you see | | gregdunn@indy.net | Is all your life will ever be. | | The Sultan of Slack(tm) | Pink Floyd | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | | ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #23 *************************
