Some recent listening.. Ana Voog "AnaVoog.com" Very nice electronica with great lyrics. Reminds me of a less cerebral Laurie Anderson or a more intellectual Madonna. Brilliant cover of the ever underrated Yoko Ono's Ask the dragon. Marry Me Jane "Marry me Jane" Nice alternative pop. Good if hardly outstanding stuff. Del Amitri "Waking Hours" Never paid much attention to them before but this is nice sunday afternoon music. Nothing ever Happens is lovely. Fidget"Glad to Be your enemy" Swedish alternative pop. Quirky, Bjorkish and not as good as their last one. Mole Session "Late Show" The swedish Tindersticks..Moody latenite music with great melodies. The singer mumbles less than Stuart Staples and has his own personality. Elevated by Elsabeth Punzi's(ex Whipped Cream)lovely backing vocals. Granada "Everone Wants To" Debut ep. Singer sounds like Stina Nordenstam and this is sort of like her with a red House Painterish vibe. Look forward to more from them. If I go to deja and search on, for example, "veda hille", I get a page full of fa.music.ecto. That's about as good an advertisement for ecto-the-mailing-list as we could wish for. (Well, ok, it could be better. For starters, a search on "happy rhodes" gets very few hits in fa.music.ecto--partly due to the legendary discursiveness of the list, and perhaps partly because on ecto she's just Happy, or HR, or even the Hapster, but rarely Happy Rhodes.) > archive which can come in handy (yeah, i know that smoe.org needs > searchable list archives -- don't remind me!). Which brings up another question--how do the people opposed to the newsgroup gateway feel about a searchable list archive? Are the two substantively different? How accessible do we want ecto to be--should it be an easy-to-find open community, or are we trying to hide the list from the world? Or just from some parts of the world? My personal preference--I'd like to see the newsgroup gateway stay, unless someone can demonstrate that it is causing some tangible harm. I'd like to see ecto advertised, I'd like to see more people that share our interests joining the list, and I think the gateway promotes that end. - -dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2000 21:27:39 +0100 (CET) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: Re: fa.music.ecto On 12 Jan 2000 dsr@lns598.lns.cornell.edu wrote: > My personal preference--I'd like to see the newsgroup gateway stay, > unless someone can demonstrate that it is causing some tangible harm. > I'd like to see ecto advertised, I'd like to see more people that > share our interests joining the list, and I think the gateway promotes > that end. I must say that I agree with that point ... the gateway is capable of doing more good for promoting the list and the artists we love than word of mouth for example. So I raise my hand in the favour of the gateway. *hugs* - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2000 15:39:41 -0500 From: psfblair@ix.netcom.com Subject: Re: fa.music.ecto As I see it, here is how the pluses and minuses stack up -- Advantages of keeping the gateway to the newsgroup: 1. Allows new people to more easily discover ecto. 2. Generates more public awareness of artists mentioned on the list. Disadvantages of keeping the gateway: 1. E-mail addresses can be harvested for spam. 2. People may not be aware of or like having their posts readable by the general public. Mitigating factor for the disadvantages: The ecto list archives are open to the public. Question: Would it be possible to keep the gateway, but strip the "from" e-mail addresses (and maybe the senders' names) off? (Actually, to do this right, all e-mail addresses would need to be stripped out, since sigs and quotes etc. often insert addresses.) Question 2: If it were possible, do people like this idea? Alas, the school seems to have "redesigned" their website yet again. There used to be a page about the venue & perhaps a seating layout. There are some cabaret tables in front of the stage - tho not sure if they're members only. Also, I'm told the balcony is quite nice, but have never sat up there. The only ones you can´t get from Samson are , it appears, Rhodes I & Rhodes II.There is a reasonable chance at any moment in time that you can get them through www.gemm.com, that´s where I got those two earlier this year.
