Fortunately, Susan's set was supposed to start at 11:00 (and didn't start until at least 11:30) so I made it. Fez was pretty full--many people stayed on from the early show. I made the mistake of showing up without a reservation, but seeing as I was alone they let me in anyway. Be forewarned: In New York, Susan & friends will fill Fez, even at the last minute. Susan was on stage with Johnny Cunningham and Aidan ???, an Irish guitar player. Later they were joined for their last four numbers by a double-bass player whose name I forget. (He hails from the northwestern U.S.) Most of the songs were Susan singing with accompanying guitar and Johnny Cunningham on fiddle. Susan started the set with a song I didn't know, then played "In London So Fair" and "Banks of Claudy" and then (after a nice instrumental Scottish air by Johnny Cunningham) they went into an extended set of pieces from *Peter and Wendy,* including the hilarious "Crocodile Tears," which is a love song the crocodile sings to Capt. Hook (because she wants to eat him). The set finished with another song I didn't know, and the encore was *Blue Moon.* Johnny Cunningham is absolutely hilarious on stage. He dedicated a song to his 96-year-old granny, who he said had quit smoking at age 80, when she got on a health kick. Quit smoking 3 packs of unfiltereds a day, and started walking. From then on she walked 5-10 miles a day... "and now nobody knows where the hell she is." Lunasa took the stage quite late in the evening and were forced to do an abbreviated set, but it was worth staying for. I've seen them four times now, and finally broke down and bought a CD, even though the first three times I told myself, "These guys are great live, but it's not the kind of stuff I would listen to on CD." But it's foot-tapping Irish jigs, reels, flings and polkas, just the thing to get you tapping your feet and even dancing on tables if you've had too much Scotch. They were the deciding factor in whether or not I was going to go this evening, and I'm not unhappy I did. I vote for removing the gateway to usenet; ecto should be a mailing list and not a newsgroup; fa.music.ecto should be a newsgroup and not a mailing list. Sounds like a great show. *sigh* So when did the whole thing finally end? For me, living 3 hours out from the city, an 11pm (which I assumed would really be 11:30) start time is just too late for a weeknight except on very rare occasions. >Susan was on stage with Johnny Cunningham and Aidan ???, an Irish >guitar player. (He hails from the >northwestern U.S.) Yes, Aidan Brennan, who I've seen several times with Susan, and the bass player was Glenn Moore, who, while he may or may not hail from there, does play in a band named Oregon. If someone >can give a good reason for its existence then let it be but if not >then I would also vote to remove it. well, i know there are some people on ecto now who would not have found the list without the gateway. some of them have subscribed and i imagine that some of them have not and continue to read the list through the newsgroup (when the list gets noisy, those with especially small mailboxes can understand the benefit of an alternate distribution mechanism -- aside from the digest which many, including me, find unwieldy at best). additionally, having the list archived at dejanews allows for a searchable archive which can come in handy (yeah, i know that smoe.org needs searchable list archives -- don't remind me!). before the commercialization of the net, this was no big problem...now, with address harvesters and so forth, having the mailing list archived in dejanews could result in increased spam (i haven't personally seen it, but then i haven't posted much over the past year or so!). for what it's worth, my personal preference is to leave it alone since it's been there forever and i haven't seen any real evidence that it's causing harm. however, if the majority of replies support its removal, i'll go ahead and do that. woj n.p. happy! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2000 18:30:24 -0800 From: "Kristen Weissleader" Subject: Within Temptation I've been playing the death out of four songs that I taped from Within = Temptation's few cds that I borrowed from a friend.
