Sharon ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Jan 2000 09:34:26 -0500 From: Patrick Moseley Subject: Re: Kate Bush-New CD This is what's on the Kate Bush News & Information Page: HomeGround fanzine's latest issue not only celebrates 20 years since The Tour Of Life, but confirms some solid news regarding progress on Kate's album. "Kate began writing and demoing songs for a new album earlier this year. She has had her recording studio serviced and upgraded and recording is expected to begin before Christmas. Kate is happy and full of energy and our former wild guess that there may be a new album by Autumn 2000 still remains a distinct possibility." (HomeGround Fanzine - November 1999) Previous to this, in Summer 1998 work on the new album was said by Kate's personal assistant to be still at the "ideas" stage. The long gap since The Red Shoes album in 1993 has created much rumour. (http://www.clubi.ie/twomey/katebush.htm) If you ask me, Autumn 2000 is still a pipe dream, because that gives Kate less than a year to record the album. I'd say a year from now is more realistic, although still hopeful. S.P. Pravatiner" Subject: A night at the Double Door Last night, Vickie and I (Chris was busy) went to a three-band concert at the Double Door. First on the bill was Sweatergirl, an all-male band whose thing is loud electric guitars and drums. I was not impressed, though Vickie thought some of their numbers were good speedmetal. No more need be said about them. The zenith of the show was the set by Rubygrass. They did their usual excellent adult alternative rock. The band sounds much like 10,000 Maniacs, and Oskar Saville sounds much like Natalie Merchant. Their website, www.rubygrass.com, tells where to find their CD. Buy it, you'll like it. The final act was the Orphans, who do Irish-flavored alternative folk rock. We had to make an early night of it, because we each had early-morning commitments. But those numbers we heard by the Orphans were satisfying indeed. Not that someone didn't like her, which would be no surprise to me, but because Neile didn't. Like she said, our tastes are usually reasonably in synch, though this appears to be a year with some red letter differnces, what with me being less enthusiastic about Lamb and not really caring for Kym Brown that much. I'm surprised you didn't offer up the contrary opinion before though, for the sake of balance if nothing else. You should do it for your own self interest though. See, one of the reason I haven't sent that big pile of discs I bought was cause I was waiting to finish a tape to go with it, and it was going to be Pavo Cristatis and Mia Doi Todd. I wouldn't bother putting her on if there's no interest. Plus, I've never heard of Aiko Shimada. Who's that? Maybe I'll be twice as wow'ed by her. It did occur to me that she might have had a particularly good or bad night on one of those shows. Doug did a great job of summing up what struck me about her too, though I thought she sounded more like Mimi Goese than Yma Sumac. The problem with my gestalt ranking is that I don't actually think her album is the best album of the year. But I do think that seeing her and getting that album was one of the more striking musical moments of the year for me. neal np: Patty Griffin at the Metro Cafe - Feb 1998 (Doug just asked her to "play something new" :) ) nr: Crossing to Safety - Wallace Stegner ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V6 #5 ************************
