(Bill's n.p. Janis Ian's Hunger) - -------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, Bill, and for those of us who trying to start our own legit CD labels and want to keep production runs small and manageable, it is a major pain. I understand that at least one Sony model doesn't have a hangup with burnt CD-Rs, but I don't know which one it is. I have a wired correspondent named Shawn Alisea, who signs his anime work as Shawn the Touched. He is also the head of the indie American anime studio called White Radish (try finding them at http://come.to/whiteradish/), and he has had to burn CD-Rs of his two shorts (_The Item_ and _Apprentice_) in the VideoCD (VCD) format because of the cost of mass pressings. The fact that DVD players gag on burnt-CD-Rs (or, more likely, were programmed to gag on them) doesn't help people like Shawn. Or me, for that matter - I'm planning on putting a "No DVD Players" icon on the packaging for my releases. We deserve better treatment than this. I have listened to it several times already. If I had gotten this earlier in the year it might have made my Top 10 list for 1999. I don't recall seeing any mention of this CD previously here on Ecto. I believe that this is a CD that some of you really might enjoy. The artist is Jacqui McShee. She was a member of the seminal celtic folk/rock/jazz ensemble from the 60s/70s called Pentangle. That group also included the incomparable guitarists John Renbourn and Bert Jansch. Jacqui appears to have retained the name of the original group and just released this disc earlier this year. The title of the CD is "Passe Avant". Jacqui has always had a very beautiful and expressive singing voice. Her voice on the early Pentangle material was in the classic celtic folk tradition ala Sandy Denny. Actually Jacqui helped to define that classic style. She also explored some more jazzy leanings with Pentangle. On "Passe Avant" Jacqui explores a number of other jazzy singing styles. The disk contains an eclectic mix of tradition celtic music (The House Carpenter, Lagan Love), funky grooving jazz /rock (Gypsy Countess, Edsong) and jazzy songs (almost cabaret or night club jazz ala Cassandra Wilson, Laura Fygi or Astrud Gilberto. These songs include We'll Be Together Again and Just For You). I really enjoy the mix of styles on the disc. Jacqui's voice is beautiful and expressive throughout. Another highlight throughout the CD is the lyrical saxophone playing of Jerry Underwood. Take care everyone. Happy Holidays! Bill M. n.p. This year has seen me move from school to the `real' world, which seem the only place as unsubstatial and incredible as my school. In any case, it has freed me to spend time with music, and money on music, the piles of which have spread percipitously in my car and tech-room. With all the music activity, what surprises me is the paucity of 1999 releases that I care about. Yes, I played Central Reservation an ungodly number of times, but it never inspired the excitment that several of the previous year's releases had. The releases I had anticipated most this year year, Sleater-Kinney's The Hot Rock, and Tom Waits' Mule Varions, fared no better. The Hot Rock is compelling, in keeping with previous albums, but the most interesting and exciting moments on the disc were difused by strange production decisions, like the grunts on A Quarter To Three. Furthermore, the disc deserves excision from my top-ten for The Size of Our Love, member of a genre of bad-taste hospital balads, most notably the final track on Spinal Tap's Break Like The Wind. Mule Variations, certainly had no grating points, but neither has it captured my imagination. Much of the CD is in fact very nice, particularly Hold On, Whats He Building, and Black Market Baby, but Tom Waits has set a standard of arresting music which he didn't quite match this time round. Still, he will have a place with me, long after Tori and Ani have worn out their respective welcomes. I did run out and buy To Venus and Back as soon as I heard about it, but somewhere arround half-way through the first disc I get distracted, by the time that Tori proclaims "Break the terror of the Urban Sprawl" to begin Riot Proof, I am totally lost. This stuff is as impenetrable as BfP, but not as pretty to listen to. Ani's output was no less promising. To the Teeth suggests that she still has a store of imagination to work from, but what I remember of it has been either cloyingly political, or disturbingly disjointed. Up Up Up Up Up Up was probably listened to more, but appart from Angry Anymore (I have fallen in love with the sound of the banjo), I barely remember anything but to skip over tracks 1 and 2. I do have a few listening recomendations: a> Cesaria Evora: Cafe Atlantico The music here escapes kitchiness purely by the skill of the performance. It is something like the sort of cuban music ilustrated on Buena Vista Social Club, but orchestrated by a producer of Spanish popular music in the sixties or so. Ms. Evora's voice is satin flowing atop the inescabably enjoyable music. (This is the only 1999 release on my list) b> Talking Heads: Naked I'm not sure that this is the best Talking Heads album, a acolade that would go to one of the records from earlier in the eighties, but it is probably my favorite David Byrne record. I added this and Zap Mama's [7] to my CD case before making the drive back from Seattle to Chicago this November, and listened mostly to them untill I couldn't stand to listend to anything but a normal human voice, talking (this lead to the unenviable condition, in the middle of southern Minnesota, of scanning the radio for anything, even a comercial, that had people talking). c> Astor Piazzolla Astor Piazzolla was the great innovator of the Tango. I would recomend Tres Minutos con Realidad, or Tango: Zero Hour. d> Erik Satie Erik Satie was a turn-of-the century composer on the avant-gaurd end of the classical realm. His cool but involving piano music more prefigured the minimalists fifty years later than it directed his contemporaries. e> Yoko Ono I turned up the Yoko Ono retrospective box for $2.99 at a local used shop. Yoko is a difficult, and aquired taste, but I can't help coming back to her irregularly. If you happen to find Yoko in the discount bin at local CD reseller, she merits at least a couple dolars and a couple minutes of atention. I hope that, having returned to Ecto in the last month, the list will once again point me in the direction of the 1999 classics I've no doubt overlooked, as it has done before. - -James Mitchell Np: Paul Simon - Can't Run But (From The Rhythm of the Saints) Ob FAQ: Is Kate really going to be making a record next year?
