It is becoming a major pain, and an even bigger turn off, to have to fight a CD's executable content when I stick it into my computer's CDROM drive. When I play a music CD, it is the music content which I want to hear! As Carolyn points out, there doesn't seem to be a way to defeat these executables from automatically launching. I hate it! I hate it! well, I have to admit that there is at least one way - but isn't an option open to everyone - not to mention skirting legalities. I've used my CD burner to copy the audio tracks of the annoying cds. And play that in the computer. Otherwise, I'm sad that the artists and or labels and or web designers still don't "get" the point that it is THEIR MUSIC. And sales of their music. And attendance at their gigs. Spiffy enhanced CD features are nice - - but if the consumer can't listen to the CD because the enhancement kicks in, the consumer misses the music; if the enhancement isn't compatible with all computer O/S, then the consumer misses the enhancement. Wasted $$ plus the consumer doesn't hear the music. If the website is kewl with frames and shockwave and layers, some consumers cannot access it, some can access it but not navigate, others have a slow or unpredictable connection. Wasted $$ and the consumer doesn't hear the music or read about gigs. Sites that offer only RealAudio or only MP3 - visitors only hear poor quality RA when they'd like to hear decent quality, or visitors dont' have the bandwidth to download the full 3minute multi-meg mp3, and would love to sample even a scratchy RA sample .... lost $$ and people don't hear the music. Technology is great, but its still *marketing* the music! This is "Day Trip to Bangor", a minor-hit 1979 single by the proto-Oysterband group Fiddler's Dram. There are versions of it on both their albums, 1979's _To See the Play_ and 1980's _Fiddler's Dram_. I think, as with "The Sounds of Silence", the earlier album has the folk version, and the latter has the doctored hit. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Dec 1999 20:03:36 -0800 (PST) From: Sue Trowbridge Subject: A Happy gift I saw something at Macy's that I thought might interest ectophiles: Happy by Clinique. Wasted $$ plus >the consumer doesn't hear the music. Well, I have my bias since I haven't had any real problems with the enhanced CDs I've had. I currently have my autorun turned off, and so I didn't even know that the new Fiona was enhanced. Otherwise, I have no problem playing the songs. Personally, I really like enhanced CDs. Sure, the stuff on them may not be needed, but if done well, I think they really add to the purchase. That said: there does seem to be a growing trend to provide completely worthless content on these ROMs. The Tori "1000 Oceans" enhanced portion, for instance, I could've done without. I refuse to log into their website to view something (the video) that itself should have been fully included on the enhanced CD. While this has not affected how the CD plays on my drive, I do note that for some reason the player makes alot of noise when it's spinning up. And this Fiona stuff? I have plenty of ways to play the CD, don't need such a completely roundabout way to listen to the songs. Otherwise, there's a link to a website which wants your email address (again, I refuse to sign up), and something about (i.e. an ad for) an ISP. In summary: I hope to see more enhanced CDs. But I hope that they don't turn out to be such a waste of time as this one (Fiona's). John Higdon (Talamasca) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 00:51:48 -0500 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: 1999 Top 10 (so far) Well, in looking over my collection, I was surprised how few candidates there were for the top 10, a possible sign of my catching up with older disks and reissues. I didn't get many discs of those much discussed on Ecto, since I find myself not listening to material in song-form much these days. But a few songs did leap out of the radio at me, though not enough to get me to list the albums at the top, such as Santana and Everlast's "Put Your Lights On", Stabbing Westward's "Save Yourself", Lo-Fidelity All Star's "Battleflag", and, yes, Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle". I set as criteria for my top 10: - - The disk was dated 1999 - - It contained new material (and I didn't count reissues of older material with added tracks, such as Miles Davis's "Complete Bitches Brew Sessions", which otherwise would have made it) (though I did count a new live album of older material) - - I had bought the CD and listened to it at least once (My non-yet-listened-to rack is rivalling the listened-to rack in size) - - I could remember the material on it - - I didn't put it out myself :-) Uri Caine Ensemble: Gustav Mahler in Toblach (I Went Out This Morning Over the Countryside) A double live set of arrangements of Mahler themes into a continuous work, involving turntablist DJ Olive, Cantor Aaron Bensoussan, and a cast of downtown jazz-related stalwarts. The single disc studio version, "Primal Light", from 1997, is equally of interest, having the added participation of Don Byron, Arto Lindsay, and Dave Douglas. Philip Glass/Robert Wilson the CIVIL warS (a tree is best measured when it is down): The Rome Section Hands down, Glass's best work since Koyaanisqatsi, possibly since Einstein on the Beach. Typically cryptic texts by Wilson, declaimed by Wilson and Laurie Anderson and sung by excellent opera folk, with engrossing orchestral settings. It was written at the point after Glass had figured out how to handle an orchestra and before he started doing it in his sleep :-). If you get one Glass disc, this (with a nod toward Glassworks and Koyaanisqatsi) is the one to get. Steve Hackett: The Tokyo Tapes Prog heaven, live: John Wetton (UK, King Crimson, Asia), Chester Thompson (Genesis), Ian McDonald (King Crimson, Foreigner), Steve Hackett (Genesis), and Julian Colbeck (Yes) together doing each others's hits. When I heard the snippet of Wetton singing "I Talk to the Wind" on the artists-shop.com Website I *had* to have it (and yes, the track's on there, despite the design goof-up that left several songs unlisted on the back cover). Susie Ibarra Trio: Radiance My favorite drummer, in trio with violinist Charles Burnham and multi-instrumentalist Cooper Moore. Splendid, closely interwined and spacous improvisation and group work, included much of the material that they did in their dynamite gig here in DC a few months ago. King Crimson: The ProjeKcts A 4-CD box of live performances by subsets of the Crim, using mostly electronic drumming and wild improvisation. Primarily atonal, heavily rhythmic, and virtuosic, it's a great ear-cleaner and bodes well for the upcoming Crim album, currently being recorded in Nashville. A good subset of the box can be heard on the single CD "Deception of the Thrush". Even better is "The Roar of P4", but that's only available via the King Crimson Collector's Club. Also of interest: Rieflin, Fripp, and Gunn: The Repercussions of Angelic Behaviour. Lamb: Fear of Fours Portishead's evil twin? Snapped my head around when I heard it at Tower. Check the archives for what everyone else said about it :-) Les Arts Sauts: Kayassine Lisa Gerrard in heaven? The score to the trapeze show. Materials include Meredith Monk covers, a movement of a Kodaly cello concerto, Sephardic chants, and other such stuff, all performed live, on a platform several stories above the audience. Yow. Dewey Redman/Cecil Taylor/Elvin Jones: Momentum Space A first-time trio of three of the greatest names in avant-garde jazz, each of whom has been a top player for over 30 years. Bracing, exciting, perhaps not for the timid. Linda Ronstadt/Emmylou Harris: Western Wall | The Tucson Sessions Fine singers in a selection of favorite songs. Not as lulling as I had expected, partially due to unexpected guitar sounds from Ethan Johns. Rosanne Cash's "Western Wall" is perhaps my favorite song, and they more than do it justice here, as with Sinead O'Connor's "This is to Mother You" and Leonard Cohen's "Sisters of Mercy". Yes: The Ladder 30 years on, they've still got it. If not at quite the classic level of, say, Fragile, certainly their best since 90125. With Trevor Rabin off in soundtrackland, they get back to the sci-fi nonsequiters and glorious flirtations with pomposity we know and love :-) (I reserve the right to change my mind in a few minutes...) - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Shekhinah: The Presence http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Dec 1999 00:12:54 EST From: SpiritWe@aol.com Subject: *Reminder: Rachael Plays Tonight in Brooklyn! *Just a last-minute reminder for those of you in the NY area* RACHAEL SAGE plays tonight, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17 @: THE RISING CAFE, 9 PM...
