Aretha Franklin won the Grammy, but ended up giving it to Esther in her awards speech because she felt Esther was more deserving. Now THAT is prestige! Torchers, to various degree of flame: - - STARBUCKS COFFEE (compilation): Songs of the siren (vols. I and II) - - DIANA KRALL: All for you (a dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio) - - ELLA FITZGERALD: Oh lady be good! (best of Ira Gershwin song book) - - TANITA TIKARAM: Lovers in the city - - LORI CARSON: Everything I touch runs wild - - some BONNIE RAITT (it's not all torch, but there's defintitely some torch in there) - - some HOLLY COLE (her earlier stuff) - - some ARETHA FLARNKLIN (even her jazzy stuff can be torchy) - - some CHET BAKER (a man, but sounds like a woman with a low voice) - - the title cut from the movie TROUBLE IN MIND, with Marianne Faithful and Mark Isham (I know, you haven't heard of it, nor will you be able to find it, but if you do, it is torch with class!). - - Bill. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 21:38:15 EST From: JavaHo@aol.com Subject: Re: torch singers Brad asks: << I've got a relative who seems to like torch singers. >> I probably won't be the only one to suggest Holly Cole. She has a very smokey voice, and her music always reminds me of something that might have been heard in a very seedy bar many decades ago (although she's contemporary and youngish). Both of her CDs are good, but I would probably recommend her first one "Tired and Emotional" as having the most torch material on it. I think it was put out in the U.S. on Green Linnet records. - --Valerie Richardson ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 23:26:07 -0500 (EST) From: joann.whetsell@oberlin.edu (JoAnn Whetsell) Subject: more torch i don't know exactly what "torch" singing is, though i have some idea from the various suggestions given. to that end, maybe vanessa daou's 1st album, zipless, would fit? although, it may be too sensual/erotic for a relative... joAnn np: katell keinig _jet_ ************* When you find a bend in the road, go straight When the sign points 'one way', deviate On the path to salvation The world is your creation Saying 'Yes' to you, saying 'Yes' to me -Vanessa Daou "Deviate" *********************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 22:12:32 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Kerri Simpson On 12/7/99, Andrew Fries wrote: >[Neal, I managed to replace my copy of Wendy Rule when I was in >Melbourne, but I failed miserably in my attempts to locate any Kerri >Simpson.
