I've finally come up with a worthy (well, hopefully) question to ask you knowledgable musicians and music lovers on the ecto mailing list. I've been fascinated for a while by the legendary suicide song, "Gloomy Sunday," that allegedly became the cause of mass suicides in Hungary (where it was composed/written) and the United States in or around 1936. I've already found a lot of useful and interesting information online, but I'd like to know if any of you are familiar with the song and its folklore and can share your knowledge with me. Just for fun I've been collecting information on "Gloomy Sunday" on a webpage and anything that any of you can tell me would be of great help. I'm especially interested in finding lesser-known recordings of the song by artists I'd otherwise miss. I know this mailing list specializes in discussing fairly obscure but extremely talented musicians, and given how popular a song "Gloomy Sunday" seems to be to perform (especially among female singer/songwriters), I'm pretty sure I've missed quite a few versions. The artists I'm aware that have made recordings of the song are Billie Holiday, Marianne Faithfull, Sarah McLachlan, Sinead O'Connor, Bjork, and my personal favorite, Diamanda Galas. Oh, and I believe there's a version on that Blair Witch "soundtrack," too. Thanks in advance to those of you who can help me. If you don't think it'd be relevant to the list at large, you can email your information about "Gloomy Sunday" straight to me. - -- Mieu Sedai of the Green Ajah aka the Dark Siren Sally d'Iscalio http://ecstasy.simplenet.com/mieu/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Dec 1999 13:39:25 +0100 (MET) From: Christian Reiter Subject: Re: Gloomy Sunday Add Heather Nova to the list, her version is on the soundtrack of the Gloomy Sunday film with erika Marozsán and is played at the beginning and end of the movie. Well, I've gotten it, and I've gotten a chance to listen to it a few times now, and I really like it, and I like it more and more each time I listen to it. Mary Jane has this way of making traditional music that is neither traditional nor non-traditional. I don't know how to explain it. But if you liked Suas e! you will like this one. Also, I am doing a page for her for the Guide, so if anyone has any comments for it, please send them to me. Thanks. Also, does anyone know anything about Oumou Sangare (from Mali)? I just got her album _Worotan_ and it's beautiful. I'd like to know more about her. And in the album was a little advertisement for other albums. This one sounded pretty interesting: Radio Tarifa _Rumba Argelina_ "From the opening title track, it is obvious this is something good, as Spanish meets Moorish meets contemporary African meets European medieval". Anyone know anything about this group? Or Ruben Gonzalez _introducting... Ruben Gonzalez_ described as "a Cuban cross between Thelonious Monk and Felix the Cat"? I'm curious to hear and see November Project. I miss October Project, though... I saw your Celtic thread the other day. My postman brought a new Celtic CD today, Barking Monkey's Evolver. Definitely not your father's Celtic music, as the commercial goes. I'm listening to Barking Monkey as I write this message -- they have a strong rock backbone, yet the fiddles come through. Alternative-Celtic would be the best way to describe them (at least the three songs I've heard so far.) But Barking Monkey doesn't stray too far from traditional roots. More on Barking Monkey later; meanwhile, their web page is http://www.barkingmonkey.net/. - --Bill n.p.
