I just got Linda Perry's new CD in the mail, and on first listen, I can tell this is going to easily push it's way into my top 10. Not really mainstream ecto-- but I think people who like passionate female vocals will like it (and don't mind a little mainstream heavy-metal influenced rock). She was dropped from her label and had to put this one out on her own label--rockstar records--so it took a little bit longer than she'd expected. (It's available only from www.lindaperry.com right now--at least as far as I know.) Her first solo album, In Flight, took a while to sink in for me. Mainly because it's more mainstream rock than I typically like--while simultaneously being remarkably sedate. I read a review that compared her album to Pink Floyd--and then something clicked--yeah, it's a stoner album! (Hopefully this offends someone--I don't mean it as a putdown or derogatory--just a way to classify it). All of a sudden it made sense. The new one seems more immediately accessible--and in some ways reminds me of Queen--Linda has some of the same theatrical style to her songwriting and singing as Freddy Mercury did. Oh, and for whoever was looking for "Sea" songs, she does a song called "Lost Command" where she uses tons of sailing metaphors. The whole album seems to be about fears and failures and maintaining hope in adversity. "Fly Away" is Linda sounding uncanningly like Janis Joplin. She is one of few who people who manage to effectively use a children's chorus on "Sunny April Afternoon"--a very happy song despite lines such as "have you ever wanted to die cuz nothing seemed to be right are you comptemplating suicide how every thought becomes so vague". The sweetness of the children's chorus is nicely balanced by Linda's rough voice. The song "Let Me Ride" is Linda sounding scarily like Axl Rose. This song is most similar to "Knock Me Out", the duet she did with Grace Slick on her first album--a sort of intense abusive lesbian relationship love story. Later in the song she says, "I don't care if you rip out my hair cuz baby I know that means I'm doing you right." Some of the drug imagery is quite un-PC, as in this song, she says, "I wanna coke you up my love lick your lips until we're both feeling high"--and that's not all. in "Somedays Never End!" she says "Have you ever wanted to corrupt the whole wide world? Cause your sick and tired of watching everyone stop and smell the roses. Every days a fuckin' holiday for you my friend maybe you would like to share the wealth or graciously pretend does anybody really truly know what P.C. means?" She even gets into the Latin Pop scene with a hidden track in Spanish at the end--but it's quite a tasteful little song. Reminds me more of older Latin Jazz than the Ricky Martin sound. All in all, a pretty intruiging solid album. Jeff Hanson ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Dec 1999 00:43:46 -0500 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: fyi Aimee Mann has apparently pushed back the "real" _Bachelor No. 2_ until early next year (which is fine, because that way I can legitimately have it on my best of list for two years, since the preview 7-track version is one of my two most-played purchases of the year). But the _Magnolia_ soundtrack is available, and is written almost entirely by Aimee. There are also a couple of old Supertramp songs and a track by Jon Brion (who's produced her for a while and who produces Fiona Apple). I imagine it will be fairly widely available, but you can buy it directly from Aimee's site for $12.99 (by comparison, Amazon wants $13.99 for it!) jeff n.p. _Path of a Body_, Veda Hille ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Dec 1999 22:11:17 -0800 From: Bill Mazur Subject: Ask the Ecto Oracle Part II Hello Everyone, I could probably do some research on the net but I thought that I would ask the Ecto Oracle instead. What is the latest news from the Peter Gabriel and KaTe camps? There is not much in the way of updated info on the Real World web site on Peter. Where is his long anticipated CD? I'm also interested in any KaTe news. Thanks in advance. Happy Holidays to you all! Bill M. n.p. Caterwaul, while it does use >a mandolin (heh) is not in any way a traditional band. yeah yeah yeah, that's what I meant. Caterwaul doesn't really come into play in a traditional Irish discussion. Plus, I've never seen them live, though I certainly wish I had. Shlocky isn't how I'd describe them either, so please don't take the above quote for the guide :) Neal ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Dec 1999 01:09:56 -0500 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Ceili Rain At 4:49 PM -0600 12/8/99, Mickey Ferguson wrote: >You sound like you've made up your mind already, but I'll go ahead and give >you my opinion of Ceili Rain, and their eponymous CD.
