The chance to see Tim Roth's directorial debut, The War Zone at its premiere on Dec. 7th in NYC! Not only that, but the premiere will be hosted by Roth himself, along with Tori Amos and her famous shoe designer Steve Madden. The buzz about the film? It was already screened at Cannes, Sundance and the Toronto Film Festival, and many reviewers are predicting it an Oscar nominee. The big man himself, Roger Ebert even declared "Of all the films I saw at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, the best was The War Zone." The movie deals with the sensitive subject of incest in a seemingly happy English family. Tim Roth has also organized the premiere so that it raises awareness, and benefits those who've suffered from incest or abuse. Proceeds from ticket sales will be given to RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. The funds will aid in their hotline (1-800-656-HOPE), which provides free, confidential counseling and 24 hour support. So how can you go to the premiere? Tickets are $250 a seat, and include a reception held at the Lava Lounge with the aforementioned hosts (for those 21 and over). To purchase tickets head over to the RAINN site. You could also WIN 2 tickets! Just send us an email to Contest@Atlantic-Records.com, NOW! The first five we receive will win 2 complimentary passes to the event. (You'd best live near New York -- sorry -- transportation is up to you.) This contest is brand new as of today, so send in those emails, and include phone numbers. Winners will be called on Monday, December 6th. http://www.rainn.org ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Dec 1999 09:41:01 -0600 From: "IPMS/Ft. I vividly remember my first "d'oh!". It was in the mid-seventies. Elton John's "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy". My sister bought it. On first listening, I remember thinking, "This is HORRID! What was he thinking???" Needless to say, it became my fave release of his. The next one I remember was Springsteen's "Born To Run". Hated Springsteen. My college roommate would not stop playing this album, though. One day I realized that she hadn't played it in a while and I kind of missed it. She nearly fainted when I plucked it out and put it on the player. There have been several "getting it" releases over the years, most notably Jane Siberry's "When I Was A Boy", and most recently Paula Cole's "This Fire". Thanks to my buddy, Richard Konrad, there have been several "grow on me" releases. He is the king of mix tapes. Lesson learned--never trust my first instinct when it comes to an artist. If I don't care for it, I just shelve it for a later day or another mood. Thanks JoAnn, for putting such a fine point on it. Well, I had a pretty yummy weekend, musically speaking. - - First of all, I finally got to see SPLENDID. This was the bare bones version, just Angie and Jesse. They played at the Hopetoun - a long established and respected venue but still just a corner pub... long cry from the Metro (which seats around 1,000) where I last saw Angie during Frente's final tour. Yet here she was, standing right by the door while the supporting band was clearing the stage... and I really wanted to come over and talk to her, but all I could think of saying was "wow, isn't this just like the good old days?" and it occurred to me she might not share my joy! But once on stage she remarked that she had the feeling of deja-vu, playing the same venues where Frente started out almost 10 years ago, and that she was really enjoying herself. I hope she meant it, because I certainly had fun - I was somewhat disappointed in their album, but this gig won me over. It made real difference, hearing those songs like this: just her voice and Jesse's guitar, live, in intimate surroundings (naturally I was right in front, and at the Hopetoun that really means intimate - arm stretch away, and not much difference in height either since the stage is just a small step above the floor). They probably won't make millions on this one, but I think their music really works better this way. I read Angie and Jesse will be staying in Australia until March and they are planning to put together a local version of Splendid, so we should have a few opportunities to see them. But I'd recommend catching them before the band is in place! - - Then My Friend The CHOCOLATE Cake paid us one of their rare visits, wonderful as always. Despite the fact that it's always been sort of part time project for them these guys can play! There are basically three types of MFTCC songs: the upbeat, bouncy ones sound just like what you'd expect from a band calling themselves My Friend The Chocolate Cake, and I usually edit them out - not that there's anything wrong with them, but they spoil the mood for me. The second type is the slower brooding ones, they are the reason I buy their records! And finally there are the instrumental interludes, which can also be some of their best moments. To my great pleasure, with each release the balance seems to shift towards the later two types. They just released a new CD, "19 easy pieces" - a collection of b-sides, demos, live versions and soundtracks so it's more of a collector's item than proper release. And it's only sold independently, at their gigs and soon through their website. But who needs a record company when from what I've seen they must've moved at least a hundred copies at this show alone! Yes, MFTCC have a low key but dedicated following though I'm not sure how many fans they have on Ecto - I know Neal liked them, is there anyone else? In any case, despite the fact that their vocalist is male I think they qualify as at least fringe Ecto material, with their rich acoustic sound and accomplished musicianship... if anyone wants to drop in or order the new album, their official website is at http://home.mira.net/~mftcc/ - - And finally, something completely different: The BIRD. Two guys; keyboard and a drum kit... no vocals. What is this? techno? drum 'n bass? I don't know, I get lost in all those labels, preferring my own technical term of "noise you can dance to". Not my favourite thing, as a rule. So they'd probably lose me very quickly if it wasn't for the live and largely improvised nature of what they do: not only do they play real drums, but the keyboard is an analogue Rolland - no samples, no loops, no sequencers... They just go out and play. This is very fast, loud and uncompromising music... Veronica might be really interested in this one! The Bird are at http://www.aian.com.au/thebird/ and they have over 15 minutes of streaming RealAudio. - ------------------------------------------------------ "Macintosh for Productivity, Linux for Development, Palm for Mobility, and Windows for Solitaire." - - spotted on a t-shirt @ macsurfshop.com - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Dec 1999 21:38:56 -0800 (PST) From: John Drummond Subject: *Jill Tracy Jill Tracy Jill Tracy* Y'all... Um Jill Tracy is the queen of the universe. The CDs arrived yesterday morning and I have listened to nothing else, LITERALLY... my GOD... I already have a new member of my pantheon, and she's about to kick a few folks out of the way and claim a seat near the top of the hierarchy... her solo-piano-and-voice album _quintessentially unreal_ is ABSOLULTELY INCREDIBLE... this woman plays so beautifully, it's so inspiring to see somebody kicking ass at the style I'm trying so hard to get right... Lordy... and the second album, _diabolical streak_ is just *so* evocative of mood, it's so perfectly produced, and the art direction and all of it... and Jill had a major hand in the production, she and an engineer did all of the sound, and she did all of the art direction herself... it's neat, the first album is almost confessional in its lyrical tone, whereas the second one is much more playful and concerned with storytelling... but they're both so amazing... the way she downplayed her piano playing on the second album in comparison with the first is also shockingly good, in that the second album's work is still ridiculsouly evocative, but still very much on the DL in contrast to the absolutely mathematics-complex lines on the first one... yes, I'm gushing... but anyhow... she's the queen of the universe. And when they stump me, I can always fall back on my night job as the oracle of ecto. So, great ecto group mind, anyone ever heard of a heavy metal song that thrashes along for a while and then breaks into yodeling before thrashing along some more? I know, it's a stretch, but what the hey.... And while we're at it... I saw Being John Malcovich the other day. What a strange and wonderful movie. Highly recommended. Plus, keeping itself in the steady stream of ecto movies I've seen lately, it has a nice Bjork song over the closing credits. But what I really want to know is this .... SPOILERS below There is a scene where John Malcovich gets to experience going into his own head, and what he finds is a world populated completely with John Malcovich's, where all language has been reduced to the word Malcovich. As soon as this happened, I had this overwhelming feeling that I had come across this idea somewhere before. It was totally familiar. I felt like it was a short story that I'd read, but I can't place it at all. I'm wild about them, and think they'd be pretty popular on ecto. As evidence of this, Jeff Hanson bought at least one album based on the songs I kept sticking on sampler tapes to him. I've included MFtCC songs on a number of samplers I've handed out to ectophiles, and their song has regularly been one that people have commented on and wanted to know more about. I think they have the kind of male vocalist that tends to go over well here (though I'm not sure I could say what kind of male vocalist that is). >if anyone wants to drop >in or order the new album, their official website is at >http://home.mira.net/~mftcc/ I checked this out and the link on their page for a store to order their cd's for the us was dead. I didn't try looking for the store instead, or attempt to buy discs elsewhere. I think Jeff got one from amazon.com. I also noticed that there was one of the older albums that I didn't have yet. So, Andrew, if you happen to be in a store that has either Good Stuff (I think that's what the last release was called) or the new one, I'd be ready to start trading again :) (BTW, did my last box ever arrive?) Also, the web site talks about all sorts of side projects. Given that one was by the two women (who play cello and violin, if memory serves), I'm guessing that it was instrumental. And since I rather like there instrumentals, that sounds promising. ANd the lead guy had a disc of film music. Have you (or anyone) heard any of these? One day I'll have to write up some reviews of all the great stuff I got from Andrew on my last trade.
