I think this album is a must-have for just about anyone on ecto, anyway. Goin' Across The Sea, an old bluegrass standard (written by Bill Monroe himself? I don't remember) has been recorded by a plethora of bluegrass artists. An interesting one to look for is Kazuhiro Inaba, a Japanese bluegrass artist who put out an album where that is the title track. Cusco's album "Water Stories" has each track named after, and inspired by, a particular body of water somewhere in the world. They're all instrumental, like all the rest of Cusco's work. This is probably Cusco's most up-tempo, energetic album, though the first of the Apurimac series may vie for that title. In any case, it's beautiful. Dar Williams' The Ocean was already mentioned here, I believe. James Keelaghan's "Captain Torres" is one of the most well written and emotionally powerful songs I have ever encountered, and it is about a ship that went down. The refrain is "la mer ne pardon pas". For those of you who know James Keelaghan's songwriting solely through "Cold Missouri Waters" on the Cry Cry Cry, this song is every bit as good as that one. It's on his latest album, Road. James Keelaghan is a songwriting deity. I'm not sure it really counts, because it hardly mentions the sea itself, but The Day The Ship Goes Down by the Oyster Band (off the album Step Outside) is a good, fun, lively song in the typical Oyster Band style. "Great Big Sea" by Great Big Sea. The band's title track :) Sarah McLachlan's "Drawn to the Rhythm" A lot of stuff by William Pint & Felicia Dale, and by Schooner Fare. Get any album by either of these groups, and you will have at least a few sea/ocean songs. Both do rather catchy sea shanty influenced folk and folk-rock type of stuff. Or folk-rock influenced sea shanty stuff. :) -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@leftbank.com cos@polyamory.org -- WBRS Waltham 100.1 FM -- info@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ try some ssspam, greeen eggsses and sssspam, my precioussssss... -- Gollum-I-Am ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Dec 1999 19:43:30 +1300 From: Eek the Cat Subject: Re: HELP! - Music of the Sea? Agreed!! The guy that is the main buyer for Amazon.com's music is a very cool guy. His name is Kevin Cole. I don't know him personally, but he started a wonderful radio station here (In Minneapolis) a few years ago and built it from the ground up. It was the most amazing thing. For an example of what the format was, the first song they played when they went on the air was Patsy Cline's "Crazy" followed by something like Nine Inch Nails. When it went off the air (because the Evil Empire - Disney bought it and turned it into a yukky pop station) this city mourned. We have not had a real good readio station since. *sniff* We miss Kevin, but he is doing a great job at Amazon. I was even able to buy Veda Hille (Spine) there.
